Phew, you almost made it through the first night. But will life be any easier during the day? Read on to learn how to survive the infected, FEDRA, raiders, and more.
After the first few hours in The Last of Us Part 1, you’re ready to see some sunlight, right? The good news: You’ll soon get to see some stunning sights during the day.
The bad news: Daytime is just as dangerous. Joel has to keep his guard up to keep himself and his traveling companions alive.
Joel, Ellie, and Tess are getting closer to the meeting with the Fireflies. Joel hopes to hand over Ellie, and then head back home with Tess. But you probably already know that it isn’t going to be quite as simple. There are many challenges ahead, and I’ll help you find your way through, around, and above them!
Chapter 3 Continues: The Outskirts
Downtown
Follow Tess until Joel says “Over here”, then walk up the small stairs, turn left and walk until you get to the open door. Examine the body inside, walk through the other doorway and go upstairs. The next part is pretty straightforward until you get to open a door with the help of Tess. Be prepared to press the action button to avoid death.
You can now search the area for supplies, or go straight ahead, then through the door to the left. After your group gets up the ledge, it’s time for some stealth time. Crouch, and follow Tess, then jump over the railing, pull the set of drawers out of the way, follow Tess, until Joel says he’ll check out the runners.
Jump down, and then deal with the infected. You need to kill them all before Tess and Ellie will follow you. There’s also a clicker around, so make sure to do stealth kills. Remember the tip about bricks and bottles from Series 1 of the guide? Now it’s time to use it.
Once that’s done, jump up the ledge at the end of the room, move the small cabinet, make your way down until you get to some water. Don’t jump into it, you need to turn to your left, then keep going until you arrive at an old subway station.
Keep moving until it’s time for another infected encounter. Sneak or kill your way through. There’s a few clickers, so be silent. To get out, boost Tess up the ledge next to the “Orange Line” turnstiles to get the ladder. Follow Tess.
Museum
At the truck, turn left and kill the infected inside. Move the drawers to the truck to climb over it. Walk a little and open the roller door. Make your way through some doors, climb up, go to your left, then to the right, crouch under a fallen beam, and help the girls through another beam.
You get separated. Go back a little, turn to your left and keep crouching, unless you want to fit the infected head-on. Make your way to the end of the corridor, open the door, go upstairs, open the next door, kill an infected, then help Tess and Ellie.
Get out through the window, climb up the fire escape stairs. Pick up the plank on the floor and place it so it covers the space between the railing and the next building. Cross over.
The Capitol Building
Follow the girls, then move the dumpster over to the closed door with the platform on top. Walk over it, jump down, and follow Tess. Open the door, and be ready for some drama.
Joel and Ellie are now on their own. If you’re interested in how Tess dies in the HBO series and how it differs from the game, check out our article on this topic.
Once you’re in control again, head up the stairs. It’s pretty straightforward, until you have to make your way past FEDRA soldiers. Sneak past them, stealth kill them, or confront them more directly. How you do it is up to you.
You can get through them in a straight line or use the side rooms. Once you’re through, go down the stairs at the end. You then have to cross another hall, but there are more FEDRA soldiers. Deal with them whichever way you want.
When you’re out, turn to your right and head down the “Park Street” stairs. Prepare to run and follow Ellie. Then it’s another small cat and mouse game with FEDRA. You know the drill.
Make your way through the old subway trains. Once you get to water, dive under the obstruction, breathe in some air, dive again, and swim to the surface again. You’ll find a pallet floating in the water a bit further on.
Move it back to Ellie and transport her next to the ladder that’s lying on the other side. She’ll move it, and you can climb up. A bit of walking and you’re out. A cutscene follows.
Chapter 4: Bill’s Town
The Woods
Follow the path, jump over a fallen tree, pick up the plank leaning next to a building, and move it against the building behind it. Climb up the building, pick up the plank, and use it to cross over. You’ll see smoke in the distance, that’s where you’re heading.
Walk and jump downhill until you get to a gate. Help Ellie over, she’ll open it. Go right and find “Marquis Music Store”. Walk down the alley next to it, and you’ll get a taste of what’s ahead.
As Joel says “Just watch your step, and you’ll be fine.”
Pick up the ladder and place it against the truck, climb up, cross the plank, pick up the plank, lean it against the wall, then climb up the wall. Carry the plank to the gap between the buildings, then walk across.
Kill the clicker below from a safe distance, then make your way towards the smoke. Watch the ground. Use bottles and bricks to activate traps from a distance. You can also shoot them. Crouch under the higher placed traps to avoid wasting resources.
After the traps, you go into a house, and you’ll find yourself hanging upside down. That’s not enough: Infected turn up while Ellie tries to free you. Make sure you have plenty of ammo before this stage. Aim well.
This is a tricky part, even on easy settings. Try to shoot them as soon as you see them, they come from the fence at the back and through the window to your right. Make sure the things don’t get Ellie. Otherwise the game’s over.
A bit later, Bill comes to the rescue.
Safe House
Follow Bill, stay alive, watch a cutscene, follow Bill some more, kill some infected, and head up some stairs. Go into the cellar, watch another cutscene, talk to Bill some more, and then follow him.
Graveyard
Make your way through the graveyard and then head towards the school. You’ll run into clickers and a few infected along the way. As usual: Deal with them in your preferred way.
You could even climb buildings to get a better view and shoot infected from above. The only important part is to get to your destination. The shortest route after leaving the graveyard is to keep to your left until you get to a door that Ellie opens for you.
Then you need to deal with more clickers, move through the house, climb up some abandoned vehicles, go to the tree house, and jump down.
Move through the house, open the garage door with Bill, then prepare for some time with the infected. There’s loads of them. You need to make your way to the school bus that’s against the fence. Boost Ellie up, and climb the ladder.
Try to open the door below, then follow Ellie’s lead. It’s not good news!
Highschool Escape
Make your way through the school. It’s pretty straightforward. Bill yells at you when you’re going the wrong way. You end up in an old gym hall, and encounter your first bloater. Keep your distance, dodge what it throws at you. Try to aim for the head, and mind the other infected coming in.
Help Bill and Ellie climb up towards the windows, and you’re out! Follow Ellie and Bill quickly. Frank discovers something sad, while Ellie finds what Joel and she need.
All that’s left to do is pretty self-explanatory, and you’re on your way to the next chapter!
Oh Yes, There’s More!
The game’s far from over. The real emotional rollercoaster is still ahead of you!
Series 4 of this guide and walkthrough will cover another challenging stretch of the game. Make sure to keep your eyes on player.me so you don’t miss it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Hard Is The Last of Us?
You can choose the difficulty, but even on the easiest setting some encounters can be tricky. If the game was a walk in the park, it wouldn’t fit the mood of the game. You’re supposed to feel a bit stressed at times!
Do You Level up in The Last of Us?
Not in the traditional way, but you can upgrade Joel’s attributes and skills by using “Pills” you collect along the way. There are also some magazines that give you some extra help.
Can I Change Difficulty Settings Mid-Game?
Yes, if you can’t beat an enemy, you can choose an easier setting. Also check out the accessibility settings, as some of these can help a lot, especially auto-targeting!
