The Walking Dead game franchise is mostly great except for The Walking Dead: Destinies, which isn’t that impressive. However, Telltale Games’ take on the canon is fantastic and should be experienced at least once by gamers; Especially as these games are available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows PC.

Reviewers at Player.com agreed that the best part about The Walking Dead game series is that decisions play a huge role in the outcome of the games. This stems from the protagonist and characters of the regular NPCs. These decisions are important enough to decide who lives and dies in The Walking Dead games. So, players shouldn’t make decisions lightly, especially as having an ally down the line may come in handy. Like Alan Wake 2, these zombie games don’t have a multiplayer mode.

Top 8 Decisions in The Walking Dead Games
A similar game to The Walking Dead is Dead Rising but you won’t be forced to make any defining choices. The choices you have to make in these games are challenging, tough, and tormenting, so they’re always morally challenging. They’re also in-depth, complex, and fun, adding value to the overall experience. To that end, below are the toughest decisions we had to make in The Walking Dead games.
#1: Let Prisoner Andrew Stay or Send Him Away | The Walking Dead: Destinies
Andrew is a prisoner that you find mid-way through The Walking Dead: Destinies at the prison. He’s antagonistic from the onset and for good reasons. For one, he’s outnumbered at the prison by Rick Grime’s gang so he can’t show his true colours. One of the biggest decisions players have to make is choosing between letting him stay in prison or casting him away. Carol calls Andrew out and advises Rick to chase him away.
Before you let him stay, remember that Andrew was a prisoner for a reason, and he’s still in inmate garb when you find him. The solution is to cast him away, dealing with the issue before it grows into a thorn in your side. The only person Andrew is truly loyal to is Tomas, who is the leader of the prisoners. He has also been shown to care for other prisoners in the canon and that’s because they’re tied to their crimes.
However, following Tomas’ death at Rick’s hands, he swears to kill the prison’s new owners. On the flip side, it’s morally wrong to reject a life in need of help, especially in a world that has experienced a zombie apocalypse. Andrew would be completely helpless, which is why this decision is memorable. Don’t forget that this decision affects T-Dog’s fate later on in the game.
#2: Kill Lee Everett or Leave Him Alive out of Guilt | Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead
Lee Everett is a protagonist in The Walking Dead who ended up in jail after murdering Georgia State Senator Sam, who slept with his wife. The apocalypse saves him from being imprisoned and later on, he encounters Clementine. He was also the sole mentor and father figure to Clementine throughout their adventures. Under him, survivors learned how to think on their feet and he only died because he tried to save his loved one.
At the end of The Walking Dead’s season one, Clementine will be tasked with the duty of killing Lee or just leaving him to reanimate. Lee was bitten by a walker, so you can either allow him to die and reanimate as a walker or just kill him out of respect. We recommend killing Lee because he doesn’t deserve such an ending.
However, it’s draining to kill a father figure who trained and fed you. Clementine is still a child, and no young girl should have to deal with the emotional trauma of killing her loved one. Lee is fondly remembered by his loved ones after his death, regardless of your decision. It’s similar to Joel and Ellie’s relationship in The Last of Us.
#3: Show Lee’s Bite Wound or Hide It | Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead
This is another morally damaging decision that you’ll be forced to make in Telltale’s The Walking Dead. It’s a precursor to the previous decision where Clementine can kill Lee to prevent him from turning into a walker. To start with, he is bitten in his attempt to save Clementine from her abductor but he gets ambushed by a walker because he wasn’t on guard. Lee finds Clementine’s hat and walkie-talkie near a trash can but feeling curious and dazed due to her absence, he messes up.

Before he can find her, he needs help from his friends, so players must decide whether to keep the bite a secret or not. Yes, another option is to amputate the infected arm, but that’s ill-advised because he’ll suffer blood loss before he can get help. You might then be tempted to keep the bite a secret until then but the ending will be bitter. It’s like playing an Alan Wake game.
So, the wisest choice is to show your companions the bite. If you do show the bite, the group will appreciate your chivalry and sharp judgement despite Lee’s impending death. Heck, more allies will follow you on your rescue mission.
#4: Shoot the Cuff Off the Right Prisoner | Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead: 400 Days is a DLC that’s standalone and packed with tense moments from the start to the finish. For one, you’re trapped on a bus when the zombies overwhelm the government and cities are destroyed. Being in the thick of it, you have to choose between two prisoners who will help you escape the prison bus. The prisoners all have their feet shackled to the bus so they can’t easily escape. So, it’s up to you to free one of the prisoners by shooting his cuffs off.

One of the prisoners is a sexual offender, while the other is a known criminal. If you choose the wrong person, there are dire consequences at the end of the road. There’s also not much time to think about this decision because of the DLC’s interactive gameplay. Another DLC you should consider picking up is Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. However, we’re digressing. The best decision that you can make is to free Danny, who won’t survive the encounter. The script writers for the game are poetic, killing the person you decide to free.
#5: Leave the Abandoned Car or Steal From It | Telltale Game’s The Walking Dead
It’s a zombie apocalypse game so resources are scarce all-round and the obvious route is to salvage whatever you can. Most players will rush this decision but when you think about it, it was always a trap. For one, there’s a car full of supplies, such as food and medicine, that your group needs to survive the onslaught of human enemies and walkers. However, the doors to those supplies are unlocked, which makes the robbery too simple and dangerous.

The real kicker is that your choice doesn’t matter because your group eventually steals the supplies. Greed, after all, is a strong motivator. Everybody who stole from the car paid for it in blood and yes, it’s not a fate that you can avoid. Despite the harsh consequences you and the group face afterwards, you need to join them in the deed or resist the temptation to progress in the game.
#6: Kill or Spare Clementine | Telltale Games’s The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is a harsh world that’s intelligently portrayed by Telltale Games. Clementine is one of the most compelling characters in video game history because she grew up in the apocalypse. For a lot of the younger audiences, it was a cathartic experience, while older games pitied her because she didn’t experience life before the outbreak. So, she’s beloved by everybody.
However, she got into a similar fate to her father figure, Lee Everett, who was bitten and had to be killed or left to reanimate. During a scene in the later phases of the game, she’s surrounded by walkers and can’t escape unscathed. So, she tells AJ to spare her the pain of reanimating as an undead. Fortunately, Clementine isn’t killed off like the rest of the characters, but she loses her leg instead after being bitten. The game reveals that AJ then amputated her leg and got her the necessary medical attention to cater for the loss of a limb. This is regardless of your decision.
#7: Save a Group Member or Choose the Medical Equipment | The Walking Dead: Destinies
One of the more memorable moments in The Walking Dead: Destinies occurred early in the game when you’re controlling Shane. Carl is injured in Hershel’s camp and Shane has to find supplies by raiding pharmacies and hospitals outside of the farm. However, it’s a two-man job so you have to choose one of the characters to go on the mission with you. In our case, we chose Beth, Hershel’s daughter, to accompany us on the supply run. Initially, the supply run was successful, with the medicine at hand, until walkers discovered their presence.
The large horde chased both characters down until bad luck reared its ugly face; Hershel’s daughter tripped. Shane’s single goal is to save Carl, who is like a son to him at that point. However, he must choose between saving the equipment or Beth. In the end, the consequences are bloody, regardless of which decision you make. So, we recommend saving the equipment if you ever grab a copy of The Walking Dead: Destinies.
#8: Save or Kill Larry | Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead
Larry is known as a troublemaker because he’s always angry, despite being older than most of the group’s members. He just can’t keep his cool and he’ll go off on anybody, including Lee Everett, the team’s de facto leader. So, when he suffers from a heart attack, the most convenient decision is to leave him to die. This decision is anti-climatic because Larry dies regardless of your decisions. This is because Kenny later kills Larry by crushing his head with a salt lick so ultimately, players don’t know if Lee’s CPR would have worked.

This decision isn’t easy because Kenny and Lilly’s opinions about Larry differ, mainly because he’s Lilly’s father. Kenny doesn’t spare Larry but Lilly helps Lee perform CPR on him. So, players are forced to help her because she’s a romantic option for you. He’s inevitably killed in episode two of The Walking Dead, which is great because he has been antagonising the group from the onset.
Our Final Say: Play Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead Titles First
It’s a known fact among gamers that Telltale Games currently makes the best The Walking Dead titles on the market. Story-wise, these games are compelling, with great characters and modelling. However, the gameplay is the highlight and that’s not because of its cartoonish nature. When you play Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead, you can expect a graphic novel that plays out like a movie. You can play other games like Resident Evil 4. However, characters can’t perform different actions, tasks, and goals depending on their choices in-game.
