New anime are popping up faster than we can watch them and naturally, game creators are getting inspiration from them. This article focuses on the top 8 anime games in development, their possible release dates, and supported platforms. Yes, everyone at Player.com, save for a few, considers these upcoming anime games mainstream; Even in the busy world of entertainment.
If you haven’t watched these anime shows before, maybe – Just maybe; These upcoming titles might convince you otherwise. For one, you’ll find a Fate title on this list. The animated series is fantastic, boasting great graphics, original abilities and powers, and compelling characters who bring out our deepest emotions. For players interested in a Boruto game, NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS is one of the better options out there.

The 8 New Anime Games Coming in 2024
We’ll be covering eight anime games that are inspired by series, such as Jujutsu Kaisen. Hype apart, we also included the reasons we’re excited to play them and our expectations of them. Watch out for Persona 3 Reload, which is launching on February 2, 2024 (Read more about it here). Keep in mind that not all of these upcoming anime games have TV series backing them up.
#1: Project Mugen
The creators behind Project Mugen give a masterclass on top-tier animations, thrusting gamers into a realm of magic and fantasy. Luckily, the anime game will be available on PS5, PC, iOS, and Android, except for Xbox Series X|S. Project Mugen is practically bonkers, with intricate particle effects and an astonishing amount of physics down to environmental destruction. Things Fall Apart and we’re not referring to the Chinua Achebe novel. From presentations and posts, these effects apply to the entire sandbox, which rivals the likes of Genshin Impact and its spiritual predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Ray tracing also seems to play a huge role in visuals, so even driving a vehicle looks too good to be true.
Our favourite part so far is combat, which features different forms of parkour, rides, explosives, weapons, and abilities. For one, you can web-sling around the city like in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 or wall-run like Faith from Mirror Edge Catalyst. Ultimately, you’ll also be able to hack and slash enemies tactically or play as a team so each member takes a turn. Project Mugen will be released in 2024 and it’ll be free-to-play. It’ll also support cross-play so iOS users can play against Android gamers.
#2: Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 is an anime fighting game that supposedly comes with many quality-of-life features. For example, there will be many characters to pick from, so the game’s replayability should be high. It’s time to go Super Saiyan Blue on opponents, both in the versus mode and story campaign. However, the game is still wrapped in complete mystery so we don’t even know the release date.

The studio previously hinted at a release during the first quarter of 2024. However, that’s not set in stone because we haven’t even seen the gameplay. Nonetheless, if we’re judging this game by the prequels, we can expect to freely roam the sandbox. The game should also use an over-the-shoulder camera view to show off the Dragon Ball universe.
For fans, the experience will be worth the wait, since you’ll have different variants of transformations to choose from. You can expect the usual fighting moves such as dodges, blocks, jumping kicks, and uppercuts. Hopefully, it’ll be one of the games being developed using Unreal Engine 5, so moves like Kamehameha will pop right off your TV screen.
#3: Wuthering Waves
Wuthering Waves is an upcoming anime RPG with a huge open world filled with activities and events to enjoy. Yes, exploration is rewarding and actively encouraged by the developers via visual cues like NPCs and bosses. Since this is an RPG, resource management for the sake of upgrades is at the core of the game. Wuthering Waves will be released in 2024, to the delight of PC, Android, and iOS fans. You can expect to find a great cast of characters with top-notch animations and great backstories. Besides that, the game is a visual masterpiece, with expertly drawn level designs.
You can also expect great combat mechanics that let players smoothly transition from spells to a sword and back to dual-wielding pistols. It’s similar to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in scope and art design, so we weren’t too surprised when it was announced to be free-to-play. However, we hope that the microtransactions in the game won’t be aggressive. That is, the game will reward players based on their feats and progress rather than through their pockets. The anime game is being developed by Kuro Game, which is also the studio behind Twin Tail Battleground.
#4: Granblue Fantasy: Relink
Granblue Fantasy: Relink is already in the works, and it’s touted to be one of the best anime games of 2024. For one, the game’s sandbox is designed with exploration in mind and this time, we’re referring to aerially traversing the Sky Realm. For gamers who haven’t been following the Granblue Fantasy franchise, the Sky Realm comprises numerous islands floating in the sky.
We also love the diversity in races, though it’s not over the top like you would experience in a Baldur Gate title. There are Humans, Harvins, Erunes, and Draphs. Humans are the pioneers of the Sky Island, leading technological innovations. Harvins are book-smart enough to run an economy effortlessly. Erunes, on the other hand, are eye candy who can wield magic like children’s play. Draphs are the most physically powerful and durable of the four races, capable of impressive feats of strength.
One of the recurring themes in the anime game is that of the Primal Beasts. These great beasts are living weapons left behind by the Astrals after a failed invasion of Sky Island. They’re scattered throughout the realm and players may just get the chance to fight them. Fighting a Primal Beast is akin to battling a god. Along the way, you’ll also make more allies while controlling two main characters and two companions.
#5: Metaphor: ReFantazio
Metaphor ReFantazio is an upcoming anime RPG from Studio Zero, the creators of Persona 3, Persona 4, and so on. The game will be launching on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation in 2024, and it’ll follow a fantasy world on the verge of collapse. You control a travelling boy who belongs to the Seeker class and your mission is to protect your kingdom. The age is mediaeval, and the culture is European, so you’ll deal with a lot of politics throughout the campaign. To that end, be prepared to forge many alliances to navigate different problems.
The anime game’s combat mechanics look great, featuring the Press Turn system from similar games. That means the combat is turn-based and every move counts towards your success or defeat. Social mechanics reminiscent of Persona games are also present. A calendar lets you plan your schedule and you’ll be able to bond with NPCs to scale up your skills. Thankfully, there are multiple characters for exploring the dense sandbox of Metaphor: ReFantazio. The playable characters are:
- Travelling Boy: He’s the main character of the game.
- Hulkenberg: Hulkenberg is a Knight so you can expect both long- and short-range attacks.
- Gallica: Gallica also offers navigation capabilities to the party, charting your ways.
- Strohl: He belongs to the Warrior class and will supposedly support the protagonist throughout the campaign.
- Heismay: Heismay is the Thief of the party and while we don’t know much about the character now, we might have a spy on our hands.
#6: Zenless Zone Zero
Zenless Zone Zero is another free-to-play anime title but it’s set in the urban world so you can expect a mix of fantasy and technology. It all starts with a futuristic and post-apocalyptic metropolis known as New Eridu. The realm has been ravaged by otherworldly beings so the metropolis is the last refuge of the survivors. Players will explore an RPG sandbox called the Hollows as Proxy.
At the heart of the gameplay, there are rogue-like mechanics so permanent death is just around the corner. You’ll battle the Ethereal and other enemies in the Hollows with your party members at your beck and call. Naturally, combat will be turn-based so you can have a fighting chance against enemies so string combos to your heart’s content.
The game will be released for iOS, Android, and Microsoft Windows in 2024. Additionally, this will be a single-player experience so you won’t be able to form parties with your friends online. The visuals will supposedly be fantastic, with great textures and lighting effects. Ultimately, PC players will enjoy Zenless Zone Zero the most.
#7: Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash
Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash is a 2024 anime title that’s being developed by Byking and Gem Drops. It’s a fighting game that owners of the PS5, Xbox Series X, Microsoft Windows PC, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch can play. The game will launch with 15 Jujutsu Sorcerers and Cursed Spirits. To unleash their full potential, you must master different Cursed Techniques, making this a 2-versus-2 title. The game is also available in single-player and online co-op modes.
Players will be able to block, dodge, punch, and uppercut foes into oblivion. Yes, special attacks are the so-called Cursed Techniques and they’re like Liu Kang’s fireball technique. Everything we’ve mentioned is tied together by a capable physics engine. So, attacks are allegedly as realistic as they come in the fighting genre.
That said, this is still the first Jujutsu Kaisen anime game ever, but right off the bat, we can see that the voiceovers, animations, and lighting effects are top-notch. The art style looks hand-drawn, so the devil is in the details, which aren’t original. Will it compete well against other fighting games such as Mortal Kombat 1 and Tekken 8? We only have to wait until February 2, 2024 to find out.
#8: Sand Land
Sand Land is a game adaptation of a manga that was created by Akira Toriyama. You’ll play as Beelzebub, a Fiend Prince who lives in a wasteland where water is the most precious resource. Your mission is to find a legendary oasis that’ll solve all the water issues you have. Remember that you’re in a tank and a wasteland is full of terrifying creatures out to get you. It’s also an RPG action game where you have two companions: Your chaperone, Thief, and the Sheriff, Rao.

To explore the sandbox, you’ll design and create vehicles including Battle Tanks, Motorbikes, and Jump-bots to leap over rivers. Freedom is a core part of the gameplay and thankfully, you’ve got the tools to explore every inch of the continent. Since this is an RPG, expect some crafting elements. For example, you can upgrade your vehicles with weapons, suspensions, and engines. Visually, the game’s performance is phenomenal, with great animations, lighting, soundtracks, and physics.
Our Final Say: Anime Games Will Benefit From the Extra Power of the PS5 and Xbox Series X
Anime games are known for their beautiful visuals, akin to video game sandboxes in many cases. After all, a video game basically renders characters, but at an extreme level. So, it’s nice to control these characters for once and experience their stories. Even though Sand Land is the last game on the list, it’s the most ingenious title you can find out there because of the lore. Earth is 70% water and although more than half of these bodies of water are salty, water is still elementary to us. Now picture a world where there’s more sand than water.
