After expecting an official announcement of the Humane AI Pin on October 14, the day of a solar eclipse, the company has decided to delay the event to November 9 after teasing the product in the Paris Fashion Week in September. However, thanks to an unexpected source, we may have just gotten glimpses of their invention, which Time Magazine doubted as one of the best inventions of 2023.
While the source was brief and light, it provided insightful information on the Humane AI Pin and gave us the best photos of the device yet. Therefore, we will uncover the Humane AI Pin, its features, and whether it is worth the hype in our article today.

What Is Humane AI Pin?
According to a transcribe provided by Inverse in TED Talk on April 22, Imran Chaudhri, the chairman and president of Humane, mentioned: “The Humane AI Pin is a new kind of wearable device and platform built entirely from the ground up for AI. It is completely standalone, and you do not need a smartphone or any other device to pair alongside it.

To highlight the product, Chaudhri wore the device in his breast pocket before tapping it instead of a wake word and then issuing voice commands as you would with an Amazon Echo smart speaker. For better reference, Chaudri stated a command to the Humane AI Pin and asked for a brief summarization of the work today: “Imagine this: you have been in meetings all day, and you just want a summary of what you had missed. The device offers summaries of emails, calendar invites, and messages.”
Although we are still unsure how the pin works without a smartphone, we know the product uses proprietary software and language learning models to power its many features. Let us take a look at the features, shall we?
Features of Humane AI Pin
Uses Technology From GPT-4 to Power Its Language Model Features
Despite knowing that the Humane AI Pin uses language learning models to power its features, there is no confirmation on which company it uses from the company itself. However, thanks to the latest leaks, we understand that the product uses GPT-4 and a mix of proprietary software to power everything from making calls to translating speech to understanding the nutritional information in a chocolate bar.
If you recall, Chaudri demonstrated the exact features in April when he answered a phone call from his wife and fellow Humane co-founder, Bethany Bongiorno, without even pushing a button to pick up the call. However, he does say hello, which might prompt the device used to answer the phone. Moreover, he demonstrated the language translation featured when he held down a button on the device, spoke a sentence, and waited as the Humane AI Pin read the same sentence in French.
While it is definitely fascinating, it is even more intriguing when Chaudri never specified that he wanted his words translated into French. As for how it works, we could only wait for more information from the company itself.

Trust Light, Screen Projector and Camera Functions
The most captivating feature highlighted in the source is the Trust Light feature. According to the source, the Trust Light function in the Humane AI Pin lights up whenever its camera, microphone, or other sensors are recording data. Based on the tweet, we can assume the Trust Light is the yellow light beside the camera.
On the subject of cameras, the device also includes a camera which shows identifying objects in the world around it. In a demonstration, Chaudri uses the camera to identify a chocolate bar, and the Humane AI Pin advises him whether or not to eat it based on his dietary requirements.
In addition, the Humane AI Pin demonstrated an ability to project a screen onto nearby surfaces when Chaudhri received a phone call from Bethany Bongiorno, which the device displayed on his hand. While he did not interact with the buttons, he could hold the call as though he was using a phone on speakerphone. Given how much the developers of Humane have talked up the AI capabilities, it is still quite a shocker to see the feature in action.

Is Humane AI Pin Worth the Hype?
In short, definitely. Although Humane is not the first startup to try to provide these features, it is noteworthy because they are attempting with a relatively small, screenless device untethered from a smartphone. In the words of ex-Apple employee Imran Chaudhri: “We like to say that the experience is screenless, seamless, and sensing, allowing you to access the power of compute while remaining present in your surroundings, fixing a balance that is felt out of place for some time now.”
Thus, with such a massive promise, it will be catastrophic if the Humane AI Pin booms during launch. However, if they succeed in their promise, it could bring a new wave of technological revolution.
