Since the launch of Threads earlier this year, many users have voiced their frustration with the app’s inability to purge their Threads profile without deleting their Instagram account. While Meta argued they decided to use the same credentials as Instagram so that users would not have to create another account to use its new microblogging platform, it eventually did not stop the app’s massive decline after being a possible contender to X.

Although it may seem too late, Meta has finally decided to listen and implement the changes everyone wanted, as users can delete their Threads profile without deleting their Instagram account in the latest update. Furthermore, Meta is introducing a feature to allow more control over Threads posts directly on Facebook and Instagram.

Adam Missouri Reveals Easy Way to Remove Threads Profile without Leaving Instagram
Adam Missouri, head of Instagram, unveiled in a post today on Threads that the latest version of the Threads app for iOS and Android now includes an option that allows users to delete their Threads profile without affecting their Instagram account. Although Missouri mentioned that the feature will not be available until the update unfolds, he provided a clear and concise way for users to delete their Threads profile.
To begin with, users must go to Settings > Account > Delete or Deactivate profile. Inside, there are two options: Delete or Disable profile.
- If you choose Deactivate Profile, everything will be archived if you ever decide to rejoin Threads.
- If you delete your account, Meta will delete your profile and all your posts, but again, without deleting your Instagram account.

The update also marks Missouri’s personal wish completed, as shortly after launching the app, he stated the company was “looking into” how it could delete the Threads profile itself. However, despite the end of the longest-standing criticism of the platform, Instagram and Threads are still tied very closely together.
For instance, one requires an Instagram account to join Threads, and the app’s only messaging feature relies on Instagram’s inbox. Threads also draw on users’ Instagram presence for recommendations and other features. Therefore, can Meta slowly continue to untangle some aspects of Threads from Instagram? We can only wait and see.
Meta Will Now Stop Pushing Threads Posts to Facebook and Instagram
Another notable update besides the deletion of Threads profile is that Meta is working on an upcoming privacy feature that will enable Threads users to opt out of automatically sharing their posts on Facebook and Instagram. According to Missouri, they are rolling out a way for users to opt out of being featured outside Threads by closing the suggested posts on other apps under privacy settings.
If you are unaware, this development is their response to the negative feedback on “For you on Threads” received from Threads users, who found the company’s aggressive cross-promotion strategies invasive.
Notably, many Threads users reported that they had seen an option within the app that enabled them to prevent posts from Facebook and Instagram. Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi confirmed their suspicion, as he also uncovered the function and stated that it will give users the option to opt-out if they don’t want their Threads posts displayed on their Facebook and Instagram feeds.

The Future of Threads Moving Forward
Furthermore, Paluzzi hinted that Threads will be undergoing a significant alteration in the future, with him sharing a screenshot hinting at the likelihood that Meta is considering making the platform available to users in the European Union. For those unaware, Meta has delayed launching Threads in Europe due to complications in the regulatory implications of the region’s Digital Services Act, particularly concerning the management of cross-platform data.
In addition, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, made a significant announcement regarding the platform’s forthcoming implementation of a complimentary edit feature for its users. It is a welcoming addition as in the past, users needed to delete their posts and repost them to rectify any mistakes, but now, users can modify their posts multiple times within a five-minute window.
Lastly, with App sleuths finding evidence of other new features that may be coming to the app, including hashtags and DMs, Threads may be heading to a brighter future than the 100 million monthly users Mark Zuckerberg highlighted last month.
