Here’s something you don’t see every day, Square Enix’s Symbiogenesis is set to be a truly unique offering from the JRPG giant as they’re hard at work to deliver their very first blockchain game. Gamers may not be so keen on the future of NFTs and in-game tokens, but some of the biggest publishers see potential in the space. Most notably, Square Enix of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy fame sees lucrative prospects in NFTs and have been quietly making waves in the blockchain scene for years.
You see, Square Enix is set to deliver a unique twist with its very own Ethereum NFT game, Symbiogensis with the game set to be released this December. This story driven PC exclusive is set to have only 500 Ethereum NFTs, which makes this a highly experimental game for the JRPG giant.
The announcement from Square Enix about its upcoming NFT (Non-Fungible Token) game, Symbiogenesis, reveals that the game will feature a total of 10,000 characters, each with unique designs spanning various races and professions. Additionally, these character portraits will be usable as profile pictures.

A Serialised Unveiling of 10,000 Characters Are on the Cards
While a new trailer for Symbiogenesis showcased a floating landmass, it left much to the imagination regarding the appearance of the 10,000 characters. The game is set to be divided into six chapters, with characters being sold as each chapter is revealed. This approach suggests a serialised release of characters, providing an incentive for players and collectors to engage with the game over an extended period.
The utilisation of NFTs in gaming has been a growing trend, allowing players to own unique and scarce in-game assets, often tied to blockchain technology for verifiable ownership and authenticity. Square Enix’s foray into this space with Symbiogenesis reflects the industry’s exploration of new monetisation models and the fusion of blockchain technology with gaming experiences.
The anticipation surrounding Symbiogenesis rises as its official website is set to launch on March 17. Initial speculation about the game’s trademark online last year sparked rumours of a potential revival of Parasite Eve, a classic Square Enix title. However, the official announcement revealed that Symbiogenesis is a blockchain game, a revelation that disappointed some fans.

A First Step for the Company Into Blockchain Games
Yosuke Matsuda, Square Enix’s current president, has been an outspoken advocate for the company’s venture into blockchain games. This commitment stands in contrast to the more cautious approach taken by other major gaming companies like Ubisoft and Electronic Arts, which have scaled back their initial enthusiasm for blockchain integration in gaming.
Notably, Matsuda is scheduled to be succeeded by Takashi Kiryu in June, which may bring about changes in the company’s strategic direction and approach to emerging technologies like blockchain within the gaming industry. The transition in leadership could influence Square Enix’s future decisions regarding blockchain games and their integration into the company’s portfolio.
The auction for Symbiogenesis NFTs is set to unfold in three distinct waves starting Monday, November 27. This innovative approach is part of the company’s strategy to integrate NFTs into its gaming ecosystem. The first wave of auctions, featuring 10 character NFTs, will span November 27-28. This will be followed by the second wave from November 30 to December 1, offering 90-character NFTs. The final wave, showcasing the largest batch of 400 NFTs, will take place from December 2-3.

Symbiogenesis: A Foray Into Blockchain Gaming
Square Enix has innovatively approached the minting process of its NFTs for Symbiogenesis. To generate interest and incentivise early adoption, the company plans to distribute these NFTs for free to members on the allowlist. However, in cases where there are multiple claimants for a specific NFT, an auction will be held to determine the highest bidder. This strategy is contingent on the demand for these assets, introducing an element of unpredictability to the acquisition process and ensuring that the distribution aligns with market dynamics and user interest.
Symbiogenesis marks a significant stride for Square Enix into the realm of blockchain gaming. Described as a “Digital collectible art project”, the game boasts a narrative-driven experience and incorporates characters, items, and various assets as Ethereum NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). Notably, the NFTs for Symbiogenesis will leverage the Polygon scaling network, renowned for its efficiency and lower transaction costs compared to the main Ethereum blockchain. This strategic use of blockchain technology and NFTs underscores Square Enix’s commitment to exploring innovative approaches within the gaming industry.
