After hosting its Consumer Electronics Show (CES) scheduled for January 8th in Las Vegas, Samsung will follow up with Galaxy Unpacked 2024 on Wednesday, January 17th, at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, with the theme: “Galaxy Unpacked 2024: Opening a New Era of Mobile AI.”
With the theme all set to focus on its new Samsung Galaxy 24 series, the tech giant further cemented the notion by stating: “The new Galaxy S series will set a higher standard for the most intelligent mobile experience yet. Get ready to discover a new era full of possibilities with the latest Galaxy innovations, designed to transform how you live, connect and create.”
The statement coincides with the New Year messages from co-CEO and Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee and co-CEO and President Kyung Kye-hyun, stating Samsung’s goal in pursuing “super-gap technologies” to maintain its competitive edge in 2024 and beyond and strengthening its competitiveness through “technological supremacy and adaptability to future changes”.
4 Things to Know About Galaxy Unpacked 2024
1) Samsung Galaxy S24 Series
Unsurprisingly, the Samsung Galaxy S24 series will headline the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event as Samsung has hyped the product as the highest spec and most feature-filled phone released yet. While it is a bold statement from Samsung, considering the features brought by the iPhone 15 and Google Pixel 8, its rumoured new additions, such as Live Translate and Generative Edit, could earn their flagship phones the higher ground.
According to rumours, Samsung’s Live Translate is a real-time processing feature that allows users to communicate in different languages when using the S24 phones. As for the Generative Edit feature, Samsung took inspiration from Google’s Magic Editor cloud service, in which users need to log into their Samsung Account and have an active internet connection to access AI to help reimagine their photos.

3) Galaxy AI and Samsung Gauss
Following the trend of AI, enthusiasts can expect Samsung to unveil details regarding its new generative AI integrated into the new S24 phones called Samsung Gauss. While the name may sound odd at first, Samsung actually adopted the name from Carl Friedrich Gauss, a mathematician who famously established distribution theory, which is the foundation of machine learning and AI.
Firstly, since Samsung’s internal staff are already utilising Samsung Gauss, we should expect the bare minimum of the AI composing emails, responding to messages and recommending responses as we type. Additionally, we can expect Live Translate to translate content in many third-party apps automatically, like Google’s Pixel 8. In addition, we should anticipate an improved summarisation tool and AI-generated image platform.
However, there seems to be a catch regarding Samsung Gauss, as there are lingering speculations that Samsung will hide most of its AI features behind a paywall. Although it is still yet to be confirmed , Samsung better have something worthwhile hidden if they want customers to pay fees to access free features they can experience on other phones.

Samsung came out of the gates in 2024 with the announcement of CES and Galaxy Unpacked. If you have followed Samsung for a while, you should expect another Unpacked event in the second half of the year or even a third if the company follows through with their ambition in 2024.
Samsung already has a strong presence in the budget and mid tier smartphone space. In the premium segment, however, it faces the Apple challenge. According to a new Counterpoint report, Apple still dominates the premium segment with 71% share in 2023 followed by Samsung at 17%. Samsung may look to deepen its presence in markets like India, MEA and Latin America where there was a sharp increase in demand for premium handsets.
