After two decades and more since its initial launch in 2002, Alien Hominid, the classic side-scrolling shoot ’em up video game developed by The Behemoth, will arrive on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Originally released as a Flash game on Newgrounds in 2002, Alien Hominid’s success earned its release on various platforms, including the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Game Boy Advance, and later, on Xbox Live Arcade as “Alien Hominid HD.”
On Saturday, the developers brought further bright news as The Behemoth announced upcoming plans for HD ports of both Alien Hominid and Alien Hominid Invasion on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, there is no specific release date for the games.
Alien Hominid Is Finally Arriving on Modern PlayStation Consoles

As mentioned above, Modern PlayStation console holders can finally experience the cult classic indie game series Alien Hominid after The Behemoth mentioned it was too much work to release the game on PlayStation 4 in 2020.
In March 2020, The Behemoth mentioned on its Twitter that the game would not be available on PlayStation 4 at launch, and many fans felt disappointed by the decision. In response, the developer clarified: “Alien Hominid Invasion won’t be coming to the PS4 at launch, unfortunately. It’s a ton of work to come to even three platforms at launch, and this is the first time we’re attempting it!”
As an indie studio, The Behemoth had limited resources, which could have influenced the decision to prioritise one platform over others, as developing a game for multiple platforms at once requires significant investment in terms of both time and money, particularly when considering the need for platform-specific optimisation and testing.
Therefore, after four years of working behind the scenes for a broader release across modern platforms and gaining experience from its previous endeavours, we can expect Alien Hominid’s HD ports to capture the legacy of the beloved franchise.

Everything Beginners Need to Know About Alien Hominid

As a game from two decades ago, Alien Hominid’s plot is pretty straightforward, as the story revolves around an alien, the titular Hominid, whose spaceship is shot down by the FBI. The alien crashes on Earth and must retrieve its spaceship while fending off waves of enemies, including FBI agents, soldiers, and many other adversaries.
Known for its fast-paced action, high difficulty level and side-scrolling shooter, players will assume the role of Hominid and navigate levels, shoot enemies, and dodge attacks. Players can also use many weapons, including the alien’s standard blaster, grenades, and melee attacks. There is even a unique ability like biting enemies’ heads off and using their heads as shields or weapons.
Besides its combat mechanics, the game’s hand-drawn art style gives it a unique, cartoonish look that still sets it apart from other games within the genre today. Thus, props to Dan Paladin, one of the co-founders of The Behemoth, as we can expect the HD ports on PS4 and PS5 to retain the distinctive style that fans recognise despite the updated graphics.
Lastly, the game supports cooperative multiplayer, allowing players to team up and tackle the game’s challenges together. It is a core feature that encourages teamwork and strategy to overcome challenges. Unfortunately for friends of different consoles, the game remains cross-play incompatible.
Should You Try Alien Hominid?
In short, Yes. Alien Hominid received positive reviews for its challenging gameplay, distinctive art, humorous tones, tight controls and fun multiplayer mode. In addition, you can get the two games in a bundle as The Behemoth treats its player base quite generously. Throwback to when he humorously stated: “The newly ported and polished Alien Hominid HD will be available to purchase in a bundle with Invasion, saving you some hard-earned lunch money in the process.”
Besides, the cult classic indie game is significant to the developer’s future titles, such as Castle Crashers and BattleBlock Theater, as the games draw inspiration from the game’s success and showcase the potential for small teams to create successful and memorable games outside of mainstream development.
