Assassin’s Creed Mirage offers a brand new experience with a revamped combat system, a deeper storyline, new characters, and better side missions. You may remember Assassin’s Creed side missions as the weakest of the bunch. So, the producers are switching it up this time to better entertain their fans.

For the first time in years, Assassin’s Creed’s protagonist won’t be a brute. Players will have to be fast and smart to beat the different missions and side quests that make up the city of Baghdad. So, the order for today is a breakdown of the new protagonist, leaks, and new skills.

The New Protagonist — Basim
Basim was an antagonist in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. But haven’t you wondered why his relationship with Eivor and Sigurd suddenly went sour? To understand Basim, players have to experience Baghdad from his eyes in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Basim is a fundamentally different fighter from Eivor and Sigurd, being born in ancient Baghdad.

Ancient Baghdad
In ancient Baghdad, nobody looks up no more — literally! So, assassinations were the theme of the era because of the power and wealth difference between the rich and the poor. So, brute forcing your way into a castle full of soldiers and assassins is a strategy that would end poorly. In Valhalla, Eivors showcases both his fighting prowess and power — keyword power.
Power is having a thousand goons ready to die for you. So, storming strongholds came naturally, because Vikings adored war and conquests. In Assassin’s Creed Mirage, you don’t have a thousand goons ready to die for you. Instead, you’re Basim, a master assassin and thief — not Eivor.
New Skills and a New Approach
Because Assassin’s Creed Mirage is a stealth-based game — the upgrades and skill system will be based on his style of combat. He’s an assassin, not a warrior, so players can expect a lot of underhanded strategies, upgrades, weapons, and skills. This is a good move because we, for one, are getting tired of the RPG experience, so we’re looking forward to controlling a protagonist who prefers to lurk in the shadows — only striking down his targets when the opportunity arises.
Smaller Map
We were serious when we said Ubisoft was prioritising stealth with Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Instead of the huge world of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Assassin’s Creed Origins, the new instalment for 2023 will feature a smaller map. Doing this forces players to take advantage of all the nifty in-game mechanics that make up the Assassin’s Creed DNA (i.e. blending with the crowd to avoid detection).
We can expect to see more environmental hazards to help level the playing field. Combining that with tools like the noisemaker will open up an avenue of options for players to exploit throughout the campaign. There are also environmental tools like pulleys which Basim can use to quickly escape his pursuers.
Next-Gen Graphical Upgrades — If Any
Hurray! The boring Assassin’s Creed art style is still in use. Forgive our sarcasm, but Assassin’s Creed Origins was staged in a desert. On the bright side though, there will be next-gen upgrades such as better facial animations, a sleeker combat system, and enhanced effects.

New Game Mechanics
With Assassin’s Creed Mirage going back to its roots, new game mechanics will be introduced.

Revamped Eagle Vision
The eagle vision is being revamped in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. You’ll still have the usual abilities like scouting any obstacle in Basim’s path. But now, the ability to mark enemies is returning. If you remember well, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla didn’t allow players to mark enemies using Synin. All players could do with Synin was to scout enemies ahead while also looking for any weak points in the enemies’ strongholds.
The Assassin’s Focus
The Assassin’s Focus is the perfect tool for crowd control because it allows Basim to eliminate multiple enemies without being noticed. Assassin’s Focus recharges using stealth kills, so players are encouraged to strike from the shadows rather than rush in guns blazing. Time slows down after each assassination for players to choose their next targets.
Sure, you can assassinate enemies in any order you want. But the only requirement is that you have to be undetected or else this move will fail. But on a low, we’re peeved at the teleportation ability since the game will be too easy if you’re phasing in and out of reality to eliminate your opponents. Alas! We haven’t experienced Assassin’s Focus for ourselves so there’s no telling how fun this ability will turn out to be.
Parrying Is More Rewarding
In the previous games, parrying only staggered enemies, giving players the chance to beat down their opponents. Now though, a successful parry allows players to instantly kill their opponent. So, perfectly timing your blocks will look divine because you can one-hit-kill enemies back-to-back. Basim is a master assassin, so Ubisoft wants players to feel like one.
It doesn’t look like the stagger bar has been removed — only revamped to make the combat smoother. So, attacking enemies will stagger them but to break their posture for one-hit kills, you have to parry enemies. We’re guessing the window for parrying will be much shorter than the previous games so the risk-to-reward ratio will be exhilarating.
Six New Tools
Assassin’s Creed Mirage is introducing six new major tools for players to dominate the game. You can grab these tools in any order you want but you’ll need to upgrade them before you can unleash their full potential. You can only pick one of the tools at the beginning but you’ll unlock the rest later on in the game.
- The Torch: The torch remains a classic that players can use to light up any dark area. It can also be thrown to ignite enemies, explosives, or any burnable object.
- The Throwing Knife: The throwing knife is the perfect assassination tool for the capable assassin. You can use it to quickly eliminate targets without creating much ruckus. An enemy sees you too quickly? Throw a knife at his throat to quickly defuse the tension.
- The Smoke Bomb: The smoke bomb is the perfect weapon for crowd control or quick getaways from hot situations. Being bullied by the law in dark alleyways? Drop a smoke bomb to evade them.
- The Noisemaker: This tool is perfect for distracting enemies or calling them to a particular location, while you sneak past them. If you can, set a trap that’ll eliminate them all.
- The Poison Trap: The great aspect of the poison trap is that it’s throwable. Once thrown, it’ll release a toxic gas that kills enemies over time. Combine this with the noisemaker and you’ll be able to pull off some pretty nifty assassinations.
- The Blowdart: The blowdart is an exquisite device that puts enemies to sleep for a brief period. So, once you’ve used it, move quickly to avoid being caught sneaking around.
Our Final Say
Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be a hit (undoubtedly) because the gameplay is moving back to its roots. No more bulldozing your way into castles and strongholds. Instead, you need to approach challenges stealthily which is a more intimate experience than the previous Assassin’s Creed games. Overall, we’re looking forward to the whole experience which is coming in October 2023.
