On Thursday, Ayaneo, a Chinese portable console developer, announced its new portable device with its dual-screen handheld system, the Ayaneo Flip DS. As the name suggests, this console is heavily inspired by the Nintendo DS, as it more or less resembles a modern version of the classic handheld console.
The portable gaming market has been booming over the past 12 months, with Ayaneo at the forefront as the company released device after device to compete with the Valve Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally. While the new models are still in the final stages of development and production, there are positive signs of an official release by the end of the year.

Ayaneo Announces Their New Consoles
It may seem surprising, but Ayaneo has focused on releasing handheld gaming PCs for years and directing their focus on Nintendo’s best-selling hardware form factor. Therefore, they took inspiration from the Nintendo DS and created their new Ayaneo Flip DS. Moreover, there will be two different models. For example, one is called the Ayaneo Flip KB, and the other is the Ayaneo Flip DS.

Design
As mentioned above, there is no available unit yet, and these pictures are just some official renders released by the company. Thus, let us get into the design.

Firstly, the new consoles have unique designs, unlike any other released portable gaming PCs. For example, the screen flips up, hence the name Flip. Moreover, the device has a 7-inch display with a second screen adopted from the classic Nintendo DS. While many handhelds and phones can already emulate the DS, they often put the top and bottom screens side by side or let you switch between looking at the top or bottom at any given time.
Furthermore, the device will have an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor with Radeon 780M integrated graphics. To put it into perspective, it is the same chip as the ASUS ROG Ally and the upcoming Lenovo Legion Go, but with a different name. There are also two analogue sticks, a D-pad, and action buttons. Lastly, we can see buttons on the back of the device, a few scattered around the chassis, a fingerprint scanner or an optical trackpad in the corner on the right. However, there is one difference between the two models, as the Flip KB features a keyboard rather than the second screen of the Flip DS.

What Can We Expect From the New Consoles?
While the specs and features of the Ayaneo Flip DS’s second screen are still unknown, we can speculate. If their design adopted the Nintendo DS, who is to say they would not adopt the features as well?
For instance, they could adopt from Nintendo Switch Online, which has many nostalgic games from classic consoles, as a recent study found that very few classic games are available on the market. Moreover, the only way to properly play Nintendo DS games is to use original hardware or the 3DS series of consoles. Therefore, Ayaneo could capitalise on this opportunity and bring endless emulation possibilities, as many great games still only exist on the DS.
Conclusion
Ayaneo is really stepping up its game to become a pioneer in the portable gaming console market, and its new model could bring back the glory and reminiscence of the 2000s gaming experience.
