Dead by Daylight, the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game by Behaviour Interactive, has been a playground for iconic killers like Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, and the Xenomorph. However, the latest addition to the killer roster takes the horror to new heights, or rather, depths. Chucky, the maniacal killer doll from the Child’s Play series, has found his way into the foggy realms of Dead by Daylight, and the journey to bring this pint-sized terror to life in the game has been nothing short of intriguing.
Chucky’s Long-Awaited Arrival
In a recent interview with Mathieu Cote, the producer and head of partnerships at Behaviour Interactive, revealed that Chucky had been on their list since day one. However, the team wanted to ensure they could do justice to the character, both in terms of gameplay mechanics and the overall experience. It wasn’t until the development of other killers, such as “The Twins”, that the team felt confident about tackling the unique challenges posed by his diminutive stature.

“We’ve developed some Killers over the years that add some components that made it easier to imagine how Chucky would work”, explained Dave Richard, the senior creative director of Dead by Daylight. The introduction of characters like Victor Deshayes, who is quite small, opened up possibilities for a killer as vertically challenged as him.

Overcoming Height Challenges
Chucky’s height, or lack thereof, posed a significant hurdle for the developers. In Dead by Daylight, a core mechanic involves the killer lifting and placing survivors on meat hooks to disable them. The challenge was to adapt this mechanic for a killer that’s only two-and-a-half feet tall.
One early solution involved slightly increasing Chucky’s height, but the team quickly realised that this compromised the character’s essence. The team experimented with various ideas, including giving him tools to overcome his height difference and allowing him to climb objects. However, the breakthrough came with a unique suggestion from Universal, the company that owns the rights to Chucky and Child’s Play.
This ingenious solution not only addressed the height issue but also added a unique twist to Chucky’s gameplay. Charles Lee Ray’s spirit could momentarily take over, allowing for the necessary interactions without compromising his iconic stature.

Chucky’s Gameplay Mechanics
The integration of the tiny killer into Dead by Daylight required more than just solving the height problem. The team had to reimagine gameplay mechanics to accommodate the pint-sized killer. One of the most significant departures from the game’s norm is him being the first killer to utilise a third-person camera in this survival horror game.
The decision to implement a third-person perspective for Chucky offers a unique experience for players and addresses potential challenges with the game environment. It allows him to navigate through maps designed for taller characters more effectively.
He comes equipped with distinctive abilities, including the “Hidey-Ho Mode”. This mode creates confusion among survivors, making it more challenging to locate the menacing doll. While in this mode, he can either “Scamper” to manoeuvre through windows or under pallets or use “Slice & Dice” to rush survivors, attacking with his iconic knife.
Chucky’s Perks and Unique Additions
Choosing to play as Chucky among all the Killers in the game grants players access to three perks: “Hex: Two Can Play,” “Friends, ‘Til the End”, and “Batteries Included”. Each perk adds a strategic layer to his gameplay.

“Hex: Two Can Play” serves as a reverse card, blinding any survivor attempting to stun or blind the killer.
“Friends, ‘Til the End” exposes the aura of the obsession when the killer hooks a survivor who is not the obsession.
“Batteries Included” provides the killer with a momentary speed boost whenever he is in range of a complete generator.
Additionally, this tiny killer arrives with the “Friends ‘Til The End Collection”, featuring the (Very rare) Back from the Dead Chucky outfit and the (Legendary) Good Gal outfit — perfect for players who want to embody the Bride of this tiny killer.

Chucky’s Integration into Dead by Daylight’s Evolving World
The process of bringing Chucky into Dead by Daylight not only showcased the creative problem-solving skills of the development team but also highlighted the game’s evolution over the years. Cote emphasised that getting the rights to this particular character was relatively straightforward due to Dead by Daylight’s success, with over 60 million players.
The evolving nature of Dead by Daylight allowed the team to explore unconventional additions like Chucky. The game, initially focused on serious slasher movies in its early years, has expanded its world to accommodate a variety of horror themes.
The tiny chaotic killer inclusion marks a significant milestone, indicating that Dead by Daylight has become a vast and powerful platform capable of supporting diverse and unexpected content.
