Troy Baker plays Higgs Monaghan in Death Stranding and his performance is spectacular. Higgs is a former Porter, who is a transporter of goods, including medicine, food, and relief supplies for settlements scattered around the sandbox. Eventually, Higgs Monaghan is seduced by Amelie, turned into a terrorist, and subdued by Sam, the game’s protagonist. Player.com loved the prequel and chances are, the sequel will impress when it’s released in 2025.

Other iconic video game protagonists that Troy Baker has voiced are The Joker, Loki, and Hawkeye. In short, Higgs Monaghan is another classic performance from the famous actor. So, we’re looking forward to his future work in Death Stranding 2.
Higgs Monaghan Is a Psychopath
Higgs Monaghan is one of the most annoying video game bosses of recent times due to his meticulous approach to problems and solving them. However, he’s an extremely violent character who causes mass extinctions just for the fun of it. Higgs’ end goal is to make humans extinct and yes, he plays his role perfectly.
Call him a narcissist, but he’s an extremely sarcastic and confident individual with pervasive tendencies. He even groped Amelie’s butt after a fight with Sam. So, the chance to kill him for good is too sweet for fans of Death Stranding to ignore.
He’s a Master Combatant
Some of Higgs’ abilities might depend on his golden mask, but he’s still a capable fighter. Heck, he had been a capable fighter long before he met Amelie, Fragile, and Sam. After all, how else could he survive as a rebel? However, after his metamorphosis into an Extinction Entity, he acquired several new powers and skills, besides wielding firearms and bombs.
#1: Potent Chiralium Control
Chiralium is basically another name for dark matter, which is said to have existed since the Big Bang. It’s behind events such as Timefall, which accelerates the ageing of everything that it comes into contact with. Overexposure to Chiralium can also change humans, bringing out their destructive tendencies and, in some cases, rewiring brain chemistry.
That said, Higgs Monaghan has potent control over Chiralium and, by proxy, all of its byproducts. He can create any object out of Chiralium, including shields, spears, and other weapons. Additionally, Higgs can amplify his weapons and attacks using Chiralium. Creating monsters also isn’t beyond his control; yes, he can control any type of BT. The only character with better control over Chiralium is Amelie, who gave Higgs Monaghan his powers.
#2: Weather Manipulation
Higgs Monaghan can also manipulate the weather to devastating effects. Being an Extinction Entity essentially makes him a demi-god who can make it rain anytime he wants. Of course, these rains or Timefalls can age anyone caught in their wake. He can also control the intensity of the rain and, thus, how fast everything degrades.

Also, Timefall doesn’t always come in the form of rain. It can likewise appear as snow with worse effects, and yes, Higgs is capable of creating this variant of Timefall. Yes, this ability isn’t a double-edged sword, so he’s free to roam the rain however he pleases.
#3: Nigh Immortality
Sam is a Repatriate, so he can guide his soul back to his body whenever he’s eaten by a BT. He will also cough up a Cryptobiote, which is an in-game health item. Amelie is another Repatriate who has repeatedly flexed her godlike powers. After all, she brought Sam and BB-28 to life in the final scenes of this PlayStation Exclusive. So, she has likely passed over the ability to Repatriate to Higgs.

He confirms it during the final battle, telling Sam that only one of them gets to escape the Beach. That’s not because his soul can’t find its way to his body without help — but because he wants to kill Sam. So, you need to incinerate Higgs’ body to fully get rid of him; It’s a possibility that’s becoming impossible as he’s rocking a robotic body now.
#4: Tar Manipulation
Tar is a black liquid that’s found where there are aggressive BTs. It’s a form of interdimensional hunting ground for BTs to trap victims and yes, Higgs can freely manipulate the viscous material. He can conjure Tar from thin air like a magician to trap opponents. He can also manipulate Tar into taking different shapes, including strings for binding smaller targets.
#5: Teleportation and Telekinesis
Teleportation is a nifty little trick that Higgs Monaghan can use to evade combat or gain tactical advantage by finding vantage points around the battlefield. There’s no limit to where he can teleport, nor does he run out of energy. So, he can teleport as many times as he wants due to his connection to Amelie’s Beach.
Telekinesis, on the other hand, lets Higgs fly, giving him an aerial advantage during combat. He can also levitate objects, including huge boulders, and sure enough, he can hurl those objects at foes with astonishing speed. Higgs Monaghan is overpowered but Sam is favoured by Amelie, so we look forward to seeing the trio’s dynamics in Death Stranding 2.
#6: Clairvoyance Powers
Clairvoyance or precognition, lets Higgs predict his future and that of others. It’s an ability that he constantly displays throughout the events of the game. Such a role essentially forces him to feel like a pawn, compounding his insanity. Instances of Higgs flexing his precognition powers are:
- Being near Sam lets him predict Bridget’s death and the fact that Amelie will be President.
- He wrote down his defeat at the hands of Sam before it happened. Afterwards, he mailed the journal to Sam, detailing his bitterness and acceptance at the fact that he would lose the final fight.
Our Final Say: Higgs Monaghan and Sam Bridges Are Both Porters
Higgs Monaghan and Sam Bridges are both successful Porters who are famous among Death Stranding’s communities for their abilities. However, Higgs’ successes went to his head, making it easier for Amelie to brainwash him. On the bright side, Sam kept his humble attitude, letting his actions and good deeds speak for themselves. Hopefully, Sam will also generate some new powers in Death Stranding 2 because Higgs Monaghan has completely lost touch with reality.
