In what could be a revolution in gaming, Microsoft is joining forces with Inworld AI in a game-changing alliance to bring AI-powered Xbox gaming into the future. According to the blog post, a series of AI tools will be introduced as part of this exciting multiyear relationship, enabling creators to create compelling quests, characters, and stories for their games.
Most notably, the crown jewel of this collaboration is the AI design copilot. The system is an ingenious system that will serve as a creative companion for Xbox developers, allowing them to weave complex scripts, dynamic dialogue trees, questlines, and much more. In this article today, we will uncover the vision behind the alliance and the tools spearheading the partnership.
The Vision Behind the Collaboration of Microsoft and Inworld AI
As mentioned above, Haiyan Zhang, General Manager of Gaming AI at Xbox, announced the alliance between Microsoft and Inworld AI in a blog post highlighting the integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) such as OpenAI’s GPT has opened new avenues for game developers. For example, in the blog post, she reflected on the evolution of gaming AI from the days of Ms Pac-Man to the present and the transformative potential of modern AI in creating living worlds, dynamic narratives, and intricate characters in fueling creativity, simplifying complexity, and enriching player engagement.
Therefore, they wanted better tools, which Inworld AI, an M12 portfolio company, is well-versed in providing AI game dialogue and narrative tools. In her words: “We believe that with better tools, developers will be able to create even more exceptional games. This partnership will combine Inworld AI’s expertise with working in generative AI models for character development and Microsoft’s advanced cloud AI solutions, including the Azure OpenAI service. Microsoft Research’s technical insights and the Xbox team’s strengths in revolutionising accessible and responsible tools will also be of great benefit to developers.”
Ilya Gelfenbeyn, CEO of Inworld AI, also gave his own comments by stating: “AI has long been an integral part of game development. Applications range from enemy AI to procedural generation, and the emergence of large language models and generative artificial intelligence has opened up new possibilities for storytelling and character interaction in games.”
AI-Powered Toolsets
AI-driven interaction’s miracles are nothing new to Inworld AI. The business has been creating AI NPCs that answer players’ questions in ways similar to Bing Chat or ChatGPT. In addition to having distinct voices, many AI NPCs in the game have elaborate dialogue trees and dynamic, customised narratives. Their talents extend to narration, allowing top-down RPG companions to issue warnings of lurking enemies.

Thus, with the priority of delivering an accessible, responsibly designed multi-platform AI toolset to assist and empower creators in dialogue, story and quest design, Microsoft and Inworld AI will include two toolsets, AI Design Copilot and AI Character Runtime Engine.
- AI Design Copilot: A tool which helps and encourages game designers to experiment with more imaginative concepts, transforming suggestions into intricate scripts, dialogue branches, missions, and more.
- AI Character Runtime Engine: An engine that can be incorporated into the game client to allow players to engage in new storylines with dynamically created dialogue, quests, and stories.

Will the Microsoft-Inworld AI Alliance Revolutionise the Future of Gaming?
While it is still too early to say if the Microsoft-Inworld AI partnership could change the gaming landscape for the better, it is definitely the right step in increasing development opportunities in humane NPCs. As per the words of Haiyan Zhang: “Our goal is to deliver state-of-the-art AI tools for game developers of any size, anywhere in the world and on every platform where players want to play. We want to help make it easier for developers to realise their visions, try new things, push the boundaries of gaming today and experiment to improve gameplay, player connection and more.”
She further stated that their approach to AI is based on three principles: Meaningful innovation, empowering people and organisations, and responsibility. Thus, she mentioned: “We will collaborate and innovate with game creators inside Xbox studios as well as third-party studios as we develop the tools that meet their needs and inspire new possibilities for future games.”
Therefore, if Xbox’s partnership with Inworld AI does succeed, we can expect many new alliances between gaming developers and a new generation of games making its place in the market. To read more about Gaming and AI articles, follow our Facebook and X pages for daily updates.
