Arkane Studios is not having a great evening. Despite being one of the most anticipated games of May 2023, Redfall’s launch has been quite disappointing. This open-world vampire FPS appears to have crumbled under the weight of millions of players’ expectations. As a result, Redfall review scores are quite low, and no one seems to be saying good things about the game.
Arkane had previously proven themselves with titles like Dishonored, Prey, and Deathloop. And we know they’ve been developing their own unique gameplay for years. However, with Redfall, it seems like they’ve taken ten steps backwards. The game doesn’t even come close to matching the success of Dishonored and has a lower average score than many ordinary FPS games.

Redfall Review Scores

New reviews will be added in the coming days. However, as of now, Redfall’s score on Metacritic stands at 63. This average includes only the ratings given by critics. So far, 41 different websites have provided scores ranging from 40 to 90.
It’s worth noting that the review version of Redfall was sent to websites quite late. As a result, many sites couldn’t allocate enough time to thoroughly assess the game within the limited timeframe. Consequently, some have not yet provided scores, which means that the overall score may potentially drop even further.
Here are some of Redfall’s review scores:
- GameSpot – 40
- Digital Trends – 40
- IGN France – 50
- Pure Xbox – 60
- Eurogamer Poland – 60
- Twinfinite – 60
- God is a Geek – 60
- Attack of the Fanboy – 70
- Game Rant – 70
- IGN Spain – 80
- We Got This Covered – 80
Of course, these scores tell something about the game. But if you’re one of those players who are eagerly awaiting Redfall, the real worrying things are hidden in the words of the critics. For example, GameSpot editor Mark Delaney gave 40 points and said:
“Ultimately, Redfall is a game that should not have been released yet. I can’t pretend to know whether Arkane chose to make a loot shooter or was assigned to make a loot-shooter, but I can tell you what it feels like: one of the best game studios in the world suddenly made toothless.“

Redfall on Steam

User ratings for Redfall have yet to be posted on Metacritic. However, players have already started sharing their impressions of the game on Steam. The game, which garnered over 1040 reviews on the day of its release, currently holds a “Mostly Negative” status on Steam, which could spell trouble for sales numbers.
Here are some comments from users who have reviewed Redfall on Steam:
- “Absolutely abysmal. The graphics are mediocre at best, the gameplay is dull and uninspiring, and the story is completely forgettable. I honestly don’t understand how a studio that produced games like Dishonored and Prey could release something like this.”
- “Sadly, Redfall is a letdown. I was looking forward to this game but it feels rushed and unfinished. The quests are repetitive, the AI is terrible, and there are numerous bugs and glitches. It’s hard to recommend this game in its current state.”
- “I wanted to like Redfall, I really did. But it’s just not good. The dialogue is cringy, the missions are monotonous, and the enemy design is lazy. It feels like a huge step back for Arkane Studios.”
- “Redfall is not worth the full price. It’s riddled with bugs, the combat is lackluster, and the story is bland. It’s a real shame because the concept had so much potential. I hope they can fix it with patches and updates.”
Taking into account that Redfall carries a $70 price tag, it’s understandable that player frustration won’t dissipate quickly. This situation could even leave a blemish on Arkane Studios’ reputation that they’ll need to address. Keep in mind that CD Projekt Red is still working to repair its image following the Cyberpunk 2077 debacle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Redfall Worth It?
Despite high expectations for Redfall, it appears the game has fallen short. A common criticism in all reviews is the game’s technical inadequacy. Additionally, the essence that made previous Arkane Studios titles special is missing in Redfall. As it stands, the $70 price tag seems unwarranted, but perhaps future updates will improve the game.
What Is Redfall Rated?
Redfall has an 18+ rating due to its inclusion of violence, blood, vampires, and horror elements. Consequently, it is not suitable for younger children to play. As with all games, the responsibility lies with parents or guardians to ensure age-appropriate content. Arkane Studios’ dark storytelling style can have an impact on young children. An age restriction warning is also displayed when accessing the game’s Steam page.
Is Redfall a AAA Game?
As a AAA game from Arkane Studios, Redfall was among the most anticipated titles of 2023. However, the early Redfall review scores have been largely negative. As a result, it may already be considered the year’s biggest letdown. Of course, there are still seven months to go, and perhaps Starfield will claim this unfortunate title instead of Redfall.
