Seven years after its launch, Sony announced the closing of its Sony Rewards Program on December 31, 2024. Initially launched as a loyalty and rewards initiative designed to offer benefits and incentives to Sony customers via the branded Sony and PlayStation credit cards, the Rewards Program showed little success despite continuous changes, which caused the termination itself.
For example, the company made a massive change to its Sony Rewards Program in 2021, whereby it only allowed Sony or PlayStation credit card holders to earn points from purchases. While it faced drawbacks and criticism, fans’ outcry did not materialise, which caused fans to slowly pull out from the Rewards Program, causing its upcoming termination in December.
However, there is one thing to note, which is that PlayStation Stars, the loyalty program launched in 2022 that rewards players for their engagement and activities within the PlayStation ecosystem with digital collectables for completing gameplay tasks, is an entirely different issue and will remain active despite the Sony Rewards Program termination.
Sony Rewards Termination Announced on An Updated FAQ Page
In an updated FAQ page shared via Sony Rewards Twitter and website, Sony announced the closing date of its Sony Rewards Program website and mobile app on December 31, 2024, with new members no longer being accepted, effective immediately. Moreover, members can no longer earn points through offers or partner offers. They also can’t link their accounts to the Sony Store or Movies.
Fortunately, users who still have points left have until December 31 to redeem any points and access their account, submit any bonus points and purchase credit request forms through the Sony Rewards app. However, it is only until July 21, a month from today. Once the final date passes, users can no longer send physical bonus points and credit request points by mail.
Furthermore, the Sony Rewards customer service will cease to operate from February 14, 2025. As for users concerned about their Sony and PlayStation credit cards, the Comenity Bank will contact you about the changes and the decision is yours to whether to continue using it until New Year’s Eve or switch.

What Caused the Sony Rewards Program to Shut Down?

It has been an arduous seven-year journey of the Sony Rewards Program, and many will find that it has outlived its worth long ago as the initial ingenious plot faced several challenges and issues over its lifetime. Let’s take a look at some below:
Complex Points System:
- Confusing Structure: Some members found the points accumulation and redemption process complicated, with various earning rates depending on the type of purchase or activity, with occasional complaints about the clarity of the consistency of the points.

Customer Service Issues:
- Slow Response Times: Some users experienced slow or inadequate responses from customer service when they had issues with points, redemptions, or account management. This issue relates to different regions, as many reported inconsistent support quality and resolution times.

Technical Difficulties:
- Website and App Problems: There were many technical issues with the Sony Rewards website and mobile app, including slow loading times, errors during the redemption process, and difficulties in tracking points. Many also experience problems like integrating the rewards program with other Sony services like PlayStation Network.

Sony Should Shift Their Attention to PlayStation Stars
With one program shutting down, who is to say that PlayStation Stars would not follow soon as the program has been having severe issues and has been down since the beginning of PlayStation’s Days of Play promotional period in early June?
While Sony has acknowledged the situation and claims to be actively working on rectifying the problem, PlayStation Stars has yet to go online for two weeks, making fans anxious about whether they could spend their points on June’s rewards after making PlayStation Store purchases during Days of Play.
Looking on the bright side, with the Sony Rewards Program shutting down, Sony has more time to focus on resolving the issues with PlayStation Stars and could (Inhale Hopium) make it better than when the two coaligned before.
