After surviving a horrendous night, and a day that wasn’t much better, Ellie and Joel are on the road. But will life get any better? Read on to find out.
Part 2 and 3 of this walkthrough helped you through the first four chapters of The Last of Us Part 1. It wasn’t easy, and you lost Tess, but you got there. It isn’t the end of the road for Joel and Ellie. There’s still a lot to experience, and some interesting plot developments along the way. As before, the walkthrough won’t describe story developments in detail, so you can enjoy them as you play through them.
For now, Ellie and Joel are getting closer to their destination, but of course, something unexpected happens. Pretty early in Chapter 5, there’s a part where players get frustrated. This guide will help you get past that and more.
Let’s play!
Chapter 5: Pittsburgh
Alone and Forsaken
Right at the start, you need to be fast. When the guy is pushing you down towards the glass spike, press the action button, or you’re dead. Then, you quickly need to get to Ellie and attack the guy with a melee attack.
This can be tricky and frustrates some players. You actually need to SPRINT towards the attacker and press the melee attack button in while sprinting at him, otherwise Ellie dies.
You’ll have to deal with more baddies afterwards. If you’re patient, you can just crouch where you are and take them off one by one. They’ll all eventually come your way. After, walk out, and open the roller door on the other side.
Keep going, it’s pretty straightforward for a while. When you arrive at the area with the broken down cars, you have two options: Take out the baddies, or hide behind cars, make sure they don’t see you, and make your way to the other side once they are gone.
Jump up the car next to the bus, then on the bus, and jump down the other side. Make your way past the checkpoint, and you’ll once again have two options: Kill people or sneak past them.
You need to get to the other end of the area, then go up some stairs outside the house on the right. There’s a few hunters upstairs as well. You know the drill. Turn left, get to the door, and go outside.
Go downstairs, and follow the only possible path until you get to an abandoned police car. Turn to the left and head to where you just saw people.
Swim past the open container, pick up the floating pallet, take it to Ellie, get her up to the plank, and then swim through the open container. Go upstairs, make your way through the area, walk over the plank, and reunite with Ellie. Then head inside the hotel.
Hotel Lobby
Turn left, then right, pick up the ladder and carry it straight ahead to where you can see elevator doors. Climb up, go upstairs, jump through the window, and deal with the people you meet or sneak past them.
Your path: Climb through the window to your left, walk out of the room, turn right, then left, the SJTP graffiti is a good way to know where to go. After you pass the sign, turn right, go upstairs, turn left, then right, make your way through the corridor, and deal with some people along the way.
Turn left, then left again, go upstairs, open the elevator doors, climb up the ladder, squeeze through to the other side, help Ellie up, and watch helplessly as the next cutscene unfolds.
Swim straight, then turn left, jump over the obstacle, head through the “Exit” door, swim to the left far end of the room, then turn around to face the door.
You’ll see stairs heading down below you. You need to dive that way, then to the door to your right. Dive past some corpses, then through the door on the right. Get back to the surface.
Face the “West Tower B1” door, then dive under the door. Turn right, then back to the surface. Go straight ahead. There are clickers around, so be careful. When you’re up the ramp, turn right and follow the power cables on the floor until they lead to a hole, but don’t go down there yet.
Go to the door to your right straight into the other room ahead. Pick up the ID card from the desk, head back, and go down the hole to a generator. You may want to deal with the closest infected before you turn it on.
Now, you need to choose between turning the generator on right away and RUNNING, or first killing off everything else in the rooms nearby, including a bloater.
Head back up, follow the power cables and head through the “Exit” door. Turn left, keep running until you get to the blue door. Use the ID card on the reader next to the door, open the door, and go upstairs.
Head through the door, turn left, go through another door, and deal with what you find in your preferred manner.
Head through the kitchen to the seating area, find the ladder, and put it up against the damaged rails upstairs. Get ready for some action button pressing. Watch the cutscene.
Climb up and keep going until you jump down some stairs. Go down the corridor, jump over some furniture, keep going, then move the piano a few meters, so you can climb up to the next level. Get into the other room, head outside, and climb into the scaffolding.
Financial District
Your destination is straight ahead, but you may want to take advantage of hiding places. You need to kill everyone. Be stealthy, or do a full-on shoot-out if you have the ammo and the skills.
Ellie will assist from above. There’s a lot of guys around, and some are in buildings on a higher level.
After the cutscene, head back to the end of the area and open the roller door to your left. Push the trolley to the room’s other side, then jump into the other room. Jump over some furniture and watch another cutscene.
Go upstairs, deal with some hunters, and jump out of the building. Run straight ahead until you get past the truck that gave the building a new entrance. Crouch unless you want to get everyone’s attention.
Keep your eyes open for traps. Stick to your left.
Move out of the building, and either sneak or kill your way to the fire escape across the road on the other side. Help Ellie up, then follow her and jump down the other side.
Turn left and get to the end of the alley. There’s more hunters, and they have an invincible truck with them. Kill them all while avoiding the truck.
Go into the building on the other side of the road; not the last one, but the one before that. Use cars and dumpsters as cover.
Move through the building, jump out the window on the other side, turn left, then left again, deal with another hunter, turn left, kill another hunter, and then run until you get into another building.
Go upstairs, head into the first room, climb out the window, make your way across to the other building and climb into the window. Move through the rooms, climb out another window, carefully get across the ledge and climb through another window.
Watch the cutscene.
Escape the City
Follow Henry. There’s a few hunters along the way, but it’s easy compared to what you’ve just been through. Watch another cutscene and follow Henry again.
Sneak up on the two hunters, stealth-kill the one on the left, and Henry will do the other one.
Now you’ll have to hide behind barricades. Don’t let the light hit you. You need to move towards the wall. The light often focuses on an infected in the distance while someone shoots it. That’s a good time to move.
Either stealth-kill the guys, or shoot straight away. The goal is to get to the other side one way or the other.
Turn off the generator, then open the gate with Henry. Shoot a guy, then head over to the truck, boost Henry up, and watch another cutscene.
Quickly open the roller door. Make your way through the building while killing more hunters. Move the trolley away from the door and get out. Get ready to sprint. Follow Ellie as quickly as you can.
Watch another cutscene.
