Despite Microsoft releasing Windows 11 just two years ago, many tech enthusiasts are awaiting the release of Windows 12. While Microsoft may be prioritising their gaming improvements with the Microsoft-Blizzard deal, they have not forgone their famous operating system as a release date is nearing, and it may come out sooner than we expected.

To clarify, before any misinformation spread, Microsoft has not officially announced the new Windows update, and we may have even gotten the name wrong. According to Intel Executive David Zisner, Intel believes 2024 will be a successive year for Microsoft, especially with their Windows refresh.

David Zinsner Hints Windows 12 in Citi 2023 Global Technology Conference
As mentioned above, the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Intel, David Zinsne, announced the prospect of a Windows 12 at the Citi 2023 Global Technology Conference. In his conference with Chris Danely, David felt optimistic about the future of Microsoft as they regained the market share on both the desktop and the notebook side earlier than experts anticipated.
When questioned about the future of Intel, David responded: “We actually believe 2024 is going to be a pretty good year for clients because of the Windows refresh. We still think that the installed base is quite old and does require a refresh, and we think next year may be the start of that, given the Windows catalyst. So, we are optimistic about how things will play out beginning in ’24.”
According to a rumour which started last year, Microsoft seeks to release a new Windows every three years. If we take this to heart, we can expect Windows 12 sometime next year. However, Microsoft has a knack of going back on their words. For example, cast your mind back to Windows 10, where the tech company announced that it would be the last version of Windows. Evidently, their promise failed to surface as they released Windows 11 and a possible Windows 12.
3 Things to Expect in Windows 12
Fortunately, Microsoft and Intel seemed as eager as us to release Windows 12. For example, if you are part of the Windows Insider program, their open software testing program, you may catch glimpses of the features of Windows 12. Below, we will look at the three things users can expect in Windows 12.

1) New Desktop UI
While there is no official confirmation of the new operating system, CEO Satya Nadella inadvertently showed off a prototype UI in the 2022 Microsoft Ignite. As seen in the picture below, the concept has some fascinating changes, including a floating taskbar and many system icons that now appear at the top of the screen, such as the Wi-Fi, battery indicators and weather widget. What does this mean? It means Microsoft is leaning toward making Windows more similar to macOS or some Linux distributions.

However, we need to reiterate this is all a prototype. Microsoft may change it significantly or scrap it entirely before Windows 12 actually launches. As for other features, we can now expect to pin widgets to the desktop instead of using a dedicated widget panel. Another new feature mentioned is the ability to create animated wallpapers with parallax effects based on 2D images.
2) AI Features
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an ongoing theme in 2023, with Google, Apple and Meta utilising the feature for their new products and enhancing their operating systems. Thus, it is definitive that Microsoft will enhance Windows 12 with more AI features as AI features are already a large part of Windows 11 with the version 23H2 update.
For example, the update introduced the new Copilot AI assistant and features for Paint that let you remove backgrounds from photos or create images by entering text. Other apps, like Snipping Tool and Photos, also have new AI-based features in Windows.
As of the time of writing this, Microsoft has not revealed any new AI features for Windows 12, but we are making a bold prediction that the new feature will include AI having the ability to recognise content displayed on the screen and recommend different actions based on the content displayed. Moreover, we expect the AI to differentiate objects in photos and make it easier to copy that object and paste it elsewhere.
3) CorePC – More Modular Operating System
According to a report by Windows Central, Microsoft is attempting a more modern version of Windows after their failure with Windows 10X. However, they are taking a different approach to making a version of Windows for every kind of device. If we are to believe the words of Zac Bowden, this new initiative is called CorePC.
CorePC will enable different device types to have different feature sets enabled, which can result in a lighter, more optimised experience for each form factor. For instance, low-end tablets or foldable PCs may not support classic Win32 applications in favour of lighter versions. However, this feature will still be available on traditional desktops, so veteran users can still use their PCs as usual.
If Microsoft does succeed, it could mean Windows 12 can strip away the elements that don’t make sense for a particular device or form factor. Moreover, it will make the Windows installation process lighter, allowing the operating system to run on lower-end hardware to compete with ChromeOS.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Windows 12 Free?
For users who own a Windows license, we expect them to have a free download to Windows 12 as Microsoft has offered free Windows updates to existing Windows users for a few years now, and it only makes sense for that to continue. For those who do not own a license, it is quite likely you would pay for the services.
Will Microsoft Force Users to Upgrade to Windows 12?
It is unlikely that Microsoft will force users to upgrade to Windows 12 as they have significantly reduced attempts to manhandle users into force-installing new versions of Windows. To prove this point, Windows 11 is still an optional choice for users still using Windows 10.
When Is Windows 12 Releasing?
Despite rumours speculating a 2024 release, there is no official confirmation release date for Windows 12. However, with the looming Microsoft Ignite on November 14, we expect Microsoft to reveal news regarding their newest operating system.
