Successor to Breath of the Wild: Tears of the Kingdom – What’s New?
New trailers are here! Many gamers are looking forward to playing the new Legend of Zelda title in May. However, this isn’t the same world you knew from Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Until you can try out all the new features yourself, this post will tell you all about what’s new in the game. Just so you know, we’ve gathered this information from trailers, press releases, forum leaks, and more. Have fun!

How Did Link’s Story Evolve?
After the events of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link and Zelda encounter a new enemy in a green-aura prison. The new enemy breaks out and then unleashes new monsters on the kingdom of Hyrule.
With the Master Sword broken and Zelda lost, gamers must explore the new game with these new abilities and features. They’re even encouraged to combine as many objects and abilities as possible to beat the game.
Link’s New Abilities
Fuse
Fuse allows players to stick objects together to create new weapons with different effects such as increased attack, range, precision, durability, and elemental damage. We were impressed by the ingenious combination of an arrow and monster eyeballs to create homing arrows. In addition, the Fuse ability can be used to create vehicles that make exploring the vast world of Hyrule easier.

Ascend
The Ascend button lets you phase right through the ceiling of any room, cave, or compartment. Unlike the previous game, you don’t need stamina to climb all the mountains anymore. You just need to find a cave first.

Recall
Recall is an ability that rewinds the movements of an object. You can’t use it to rewind time, but you can change the trajectory of many objects including enemy weapons.

Ultrahand
Ultrahand is similar to the Fuse ability, but is better-suited for exploration outside of combat. It allows you to attach and detach objects like logs of wood, fans, and basically anything else you can think of. So far, we’ve seen only one reason to use the Ultrahand: Exploration!

The New Biomes
Cave Systems
When it comes to exploring the ground, not much has changed. Ruins, towns, stables, and stores are incredibly similar to Breath of the Wild. A few of the Sheikha towers are gone, but there is a new network of caves that run through Hyrule. How deep do they go? No one knows at the moment. But players can use the “Ascend” ability to reach the surface at any time.

Sky Islands
This is a collection of tiny and huge land masses floating in the skies of Hyrule. The habitat is full of different environments and enemies. There are even rivers on these islands. To reach them, Link can use new flying vehicles or use the “Recall” ability to call stones back to the islands.

New Vehicles for Deeper Exploration
A variety of vehicles are now available for exploring the rivers, skies and lands of Hyrule. But instead of buying a horse like before, you can use the Ultrahand. Simply merge objects together to get different exploration options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Tears of the Kingdom Have Horses?
Absolutely! Horses are still a big part of the game. While there are new sky islands that float above Hyrule, ground exploration is just as extensive. Fortunately, Nintendo reportedly has one or two imaginative ways to explore the open-world game with horses.
Can You Fly in Tears of the Kingdom?
Technically, Link has always been able to fly using the game’s abilities and mechanics. A popular strategy was to use the “Stasis” ability to store kinetic energy in objects, hitting them repeatedly to move them in a certain direction. In Tears of the Kingdom you’ll be able to combine fans and a board to keep the high mountains of Hyrule in the air.
When Is Tears of the Kingdom Coming Out?
The original release date of Tears of the Kingdom for all Switch models is May 12, 2023. Follow our updates for news on the game’s release.
