Dota 2 holds the record for the highest esports prize pool ever. They achieved this record in the 10th edition of The International, (Dota 2’s annual world championship) which was held in 2021. The reason why the game had such a massive prize pool is that the game allowed fans to crowdfund the tournament by buying the battle pass and its related offerings. Essentially, every purchase a player made would contribute to the prize pool of the tournament.
The reason why Valve was able to collect such a huge amount is mainly due to the 2021 battle pass being the best the game has ever released, which resonated with the community, leading to higher sales and, consequently, a significant increase in the tournament’s prize money.
