Lies of P is an upcoming souls-like game that’s being developed by Round8 Studio and will be released on September 17, 2023. Pinocchio is a universally recognised fictional character because of his simplicity and magical appeal. Picture a boy whose nose grows longer the more he lies. Lies of P is a video game about Pinocchio that tells a reformed and darker version of the puppet boy. The game will be a single-player experience with a mix of action and adventure themes.
Before we forget, the events of the game won’t take place in the woods. Instead, players take to a gothic street filled with machines and robots who’ve been programmed to eliminate humankind. But besides the presumably tight narrative, why should players pick up a copy on September 17? Discover 5 reasons to consider playing Lies of P when it’s released next month.

5 Legit Reasons to Play Lies of P
Lies of P will cost £46.44, so it’s not exactly cheap nor will the developers be offering a discount on the release date. Pre-ordering the game might nab you add-ons like weapons and armor or outfits. But these aren’t legitimate reasons to be convinced that you’re purchasing a suitable game. After all, games like Starfield, Mortal Kombat 1, and NBA 2K24 are being released. To that end, here are the features of the game that should convince you of its potential. Strategically speaking, waiting until the first wave of player reviews hits the news is an excellent move.
Exquisite Crafting System for Weapons
In souls-like games like Elden Ring, players can only hunt down weapons. You also can’t craft weapons on the go. Rather, there are different tiers of weapons. Some weapons are common, rusty, and not powerful enough to crush your enemies. Other weapons like the Sword of Night and Flame, Moonveil, and Reduvia are extremely powerful.
Lies of P takes a completely different approach to crafting weapons, which is as cutting-edge as it gets in the souls-like genre. Each weapon you come across in the game consists of two parts, which are the Blade and the Handle. Coincidentally, players can swap out the blades and handles of different weapons for each other to create even more unique weapons. Both the Blade and Handle of your weapons offer unique traits and stats. Weapon customisation directly mirrors Pinocchio’s status as a puppet, whose stats and attributes can be swapped out at any moment.
The Blade
Your Blade determines your weapon’s attack power, guard stats for defending against enemy blows, and a primary Fable Art. Since the Blade is the part that cuts and hurts your opponents, it also decides your weapon’s shape. Some of the Blades we came across in the demo are:
- Puppet’s Sabre Blade.
- Greatsword of Fate Blade.
- Sacrificial Evidence Blade
- Wintry Rapier’s Blade.
- Electric Coil Stick Head.
The Handle
The Handle of your weapon determines its moveset and attacking speed. It also helps scale up your other stats to be more deadly in combat. Some of the Handles that were shown in the demo are:
- Sacrificial Evidence Blade.
- Wintry Rapier’s Handle.
- Krat Police Handle.
- Greatsword of Fate Handle.
Fable Arts Remind Us of the Ashes of War in Elden Ring
Fable Arts are weapon skills that are unique to a weapon, just like the Ashes of War were bound to weapons in Elden Ring. Don’t miss this up with runes from the Assassin’s Creed games in the sense that they don’t affect a single or group of stats. Instead, Fable Arts unlock new moves that can help you hack and slash your opponents. To give you an idea of their function, below is a table of the Fable Arts unveiled in the demo.
Fable Arts | Function |
Storm Slash | The Storm Slash allows players to repeatedly slash at enemies in front of them. |
Link Slash | The Link Slash also lets players slash enemies in front of them by using a Fable slot to slash 3 more times. |
Storm Stab | The Storm Stab allows you to repeatedly stab enemies in front of you. |
Single Slash | With the Single Slash, players gather momentum for one huge forward slash. |
Absolute Defence | Perfect for greatswords, the Absolute Defence completely covers up Pinocchio’s body from attacks by acting as a shield that he holds in front of himself. |
Guard Parry | The Guard Parry will deflect enemy blows once you bring your guard up at the right time. |
Rush Smash | The Rush Smash is perfect for weapons like batons rather than bladed weapons. In short, players quickly leap forward to smash enemies using their jump’s momentum. |
Generate | It enhances the Electric Blitz attack for a brief period. |
Great Weapon Variety
There are more weapons in Lies of P than you can imagine. A few of the weapons that’ll be available in the game are sabres, swords, daggers, knives, hammers, clubs, batons, and more. Each weapon will already be combined to form a single attacking or defending tool. To experiment with the great variety of weapons, players have to use the Stargazer to dismantle and combine Blades and Handles. Luckily, once a weapon is combined and stored in your inventory, you can swap it out for another weapon at any point in the game.
The Legion Arms
The Legion Arm is exactly like Sekiro’s Prosthetic arm, which grants several combat capabilities. Pinocchio’s Legion Arm is imbued with special moves that can be executed by a unique MP. To replenish the metre, you can ingest a consumable or simply rest at a Stargazer. Allegedly, there will be more than five Legion Arms scattered around Krat, including the Iron Fist, Fulminis, Flamberge, Puppet String, and Falcon Eyes.
You’ll have to find secrets, open vaults, and defeat bosses to unlock the Legion Arms. Additionally, you can upgrade a Legion Arm to unlock more powers and moves. Players will require Faded Quenching Stones to upgrade the Legion Arm. To upgrade or swap out your Legion Arm, you must visit the Stargazer. Some of the effects of Legion Arms include:
- Charging attacks.
- Burn enemies with a flamethrower.
- Send out a short-range electric shock.
- Shoot out explosives using a mini-cannon.
Three Distinct Combat Styles
There are distinct combat styles in Lies of P, which are:
- Path of the Cricket: The Path of the Cricket is a balanced playstyle that prioritises both speed and power. You’ll get the best of both worlds and Pinocchio will start with 283 HP, 109 Stamina, 110 Physical Attack, and 78 Physical Defence.
- Path of the Bastard: The Path of the Bastard is the best for players who prefer a dexterity build. It’s perfect for players who prefer being nimble, fast, and quick to evade. The beginning stats for the Path of the Bastard are 262 HP, 132 Stamina, 99 Physical Attack, and 74 Physical Defence.
- Path of the Sweeper: This path focuses on pure power, not being nimble or quick to evade. If you favour greatswords, this is the best combat style for clearing out large groups of enemies. Players start the Path of the Sweeper with 323 HP, 96 Stamina, 123 Physical Attack, and 80 Physical Defence.
Our Final Say
We wish that Lies of P wasn’t postponed, but September isn’t far off anymore. Also, it would have been nice to experience the title on the best video game engines like Unreal Engine 5. Nevertheless, Lies of P aims to entice players with a unique combat system, a familiar story and character, and great visuals.
