After the first initial trailer of Palworld in 2021, we were all left wondering about only two things: Why are people riding on Pokemon-like creatures with guns, and when will the game be released? To answer the questions on everyone’s lips, we think it is appropriate to start with the second one. The developers behind Palworld, Pocketpair, a Japanese video game company, initially scheduled a release in 2022. However, the CEO of Palworld then addressed the situation and said they were still unsure whether to release the game by the end of the year.
Furthermore, he also mentioned that the release date that some third-party sites show does not reflect the actual release date. Thus, 2023 arrived, and promising news finally came at the Summer Game Fest. Palworld introduced a new trailer featuring Pals, new battle scenes, new information, and the release date announcement. Today, we will discuss the Pokemon-like game coming in January 2024.
What Is Palworld?
After their success with the open-world game, Craftopia, Pocketpair decided to try the concept of a multiplayer open-world survival crafting game. Palworld is their result as the game’s focus is catching the various Pals that inhabit this world, battling alongside them, using their abilities to farm or explore the land, and fighting off illegal poachers together.
However, Pocketpair has explained that players can approach the game in whatever way works for them, whether they want a cosy life sim or a fast-paced shooter game. For example, players can live a slow life with their new Pal friends or throw themselves into life-and-death battles.
4 Key Features in Palworld
Open World Exploration
Palworld is an open-world game themed with adventure survival. Thus, it is not surprising to encounter dangers such as food shortages, harsh weather, and illegal poachers. To survive in Palworld, you must have the guts to do anything, as the developers stated that you may even need to consume one of your Pals.
Taking a lighter turn, Palworld has many different areas, such as meadows, deserts, snowy mountains, and volcanic mountains, for players to explore. For example, each region has various species of Pals that adapt to the environment and dungeons hidden within. There are also places called hunting prohibited areas where endangered Pals species live, so be sure to look for them as they are worth a fortune to keep or to sell. Fortunately, players don’t have to travel each region by foot as Palworld allows players to swim, dig holes and even fly through the sky with their Pal companions.
Weapons to Collect Pals
Weapons are the separator between Palworld and Pokemon, as players can select guns, bows and even use their fists to collect Pals instead of a Pokeball. While this may upset the family-friendly Pokemon fanbase that encourages close bonds with your creatures and treat them as friends, we think Palworld sheds light on what actually happens in the real world.
The List of Weapons in Palworld Includes:
- Pistols
- Assault Rifles
- Sniper Rifles
- Rocket Launchers
- Hunting Bow
- Baseball Bats
- Fists
Base Building with Pals
If you want to enjoy a slow life and the game at your own pace, you can build a base with your Pal friends, as every Pal is unique and different. For example, you can have Pals specialising in lighting fires, generating power, mining minerals, harvesting crops on the farm and many more. You can even breed Pals and raise them to be the strongest, as they will inherit their parent’s characteristics.
Furthermore, you can have a factory and place Pals in it. There is also the feature of installing weapons around the base to prepare for sieges. While labour law does not apply to Pals as they will work forever as long as you feed them, try to treat the adorable creatures the way you want to be treated, unlike your blackhearted bosses in real life.
Adventure in Multiplayer Mode
The best feature of Palworld is the multiplayer mode, as players can play with friends, go on adventures and defeat dungeon bosses together. Furthermore, exchanging Pals is also possible in Multiplayer.
However, if teaming up is not your cup of tea, you can invite your friend to your world and beat them to steal their Pals and items.

Concluding Remarks
While Palworld may not even touch the longevity and legacy of Pokemon, the better and smoother graphics will definitely entice some people from the fandom to play the game. Who knows? Maybe this Pokemon-with-guns game will bring a new trend.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Palworld the Same as Pokemon?
The theme of collecting creatures may resemble Pokemon, but Palworld is more mature than the family-friendly type games from Pokemon. Besides the differential in weapons, players in Palworld can poach endangered species and force their Pals into manual labour. Players can even eat their Pal if they get hungry – although it is law forbidden.
Is Palworld Only Available on PC?
No. Although the early access of Palworld in January 2024 is only on PC, an Xbox version will happen eventually, as Craftopia was available on Xbox One and the Xbox Series X|S. However, signs are not promising for PlayStation users as we expect Pocketpair to stick with just PC and Xbox.
How Many Pals Can We Catch in Palworld?
With the theme surrounding collecting the creatures called Pal, we know the game will expand on the 96 we know now. It is quite a coincidence as the number is on par with the amount of new Pokemon that appeared in Pokemon Sword & Shield.
