It appears that Instagram have been actively releasing updates and introducing new features over the past few months. From collaborative features on Posts to expanding the Close Friends feature, Instagram are maintaining their momentum with the introduction of 6 new features in this latest update. Notably, one of the intriguing additions is Instagram’s custom AI stickers, capturing the interest of users with its cute and creative settings. Let’s delve into this seemingly creative update along with the other recent changes.
1. Instagram’s Custom AI Stickers
The first new feature in this update is the introduction of Instagram’s custom AI stickers. Powered by Meta’s Segment Anything AI model, this new feature allows users to create custom stickers for their Reels and Stories using AI. Users can generate stickers by uploading images or videos from their phone’s Camera Roll or selecting from eligible media on Instagram.
How to Use Instagram’s Custom AI Stickers?
To generate this newly introduced feature – Instagram’s custom AI stickers is easy. The AI model enables users to effortlessly remove any object from an image with a single click, similar to the image cutout feature introduced in Apple’s iOS 16. In iMessage, Apple provides the option to create personalised stickers, such as a sticker featuring your favourite pet, by pressing and holding on to the photo’s subject to separate it from the background.

Meta’s personalised Instagram’s custom AI stickers operate in a similar fashion. When you direct the app to a specific piece of media, it automatically identifies and emphasises the photo’s subject. If the AI makes an error or you desire adjustments to the sticker, you can opt to manually choose the sticker’s subject. After that, you simply tap “Use Sticker” to incorporate the customised sticker into your Reel or Story.
Users can utilise this feature through a newly introduced “Create” option located beside the sticker search entry box, alongside Poll, Add Yours, Quiz, and other options. Yet, Instagram’s custom AI stickers are now currently labelled as a “Test”.
The Development of Instagram’s Custom AI Stickers
It’s important to distinguish this latest Instagram’s custom AI stickers from the previously introduced AI stickers in 2017, where users could input text to generate a sticker using provided prompts. Meta showcased this technology at the Meta Connect event in September, featuring their foundational image generation model, Emu. This feature gradually became available to English-language users in the month following the event. Besides the updates on this AI technology, there are also other updates. 2. “Undo” and “Redo” for Reels

Instagram’s custom AI stickers feature is only a part of this update, there are also other new features included as mentioned above. Instagram’s custom AI stickers are introduced alongside this new “Undo” and “Redo” functionalities for Reels, where you get the tools for scaling, cropping, and rotating individual clips, and access to a new Media Clip hub for creating memes by incorporating audio-enhanced clips into your Reels.
3. New Photo Filters, Fonts, Styles, Text-to-Speech Voices

Moving on to another feature introduced besides Instagram’s custom AI stickers is the introduction of new photo filters on Posts. Photo filters aren’t an unfamiliar one as this once defined Instagram in their early days. However, it has been deprioritised as the social media app later developed to focus more on video, Stories, and Reels. And they seem to be cherishing this old feature by reintroducing it on stage with better updates on it, claiming that photo filters include both those offering “Subtle colour edits” and those for more “Expressive styles”.
Besides, the company introduced 10 additional English text-to-speech voices (Available in selected countries), 6 fresh text fonts and styles, and added support for outlines.

4. Audio Browser

Instagram’s custom AI stickers feature may seem to take the most attention, but there are other features that also seem interesting. The new feature with the audio browser provides new methods to discover trending audio and you can access the audio browser from the top of the Camera Roll.
5. Ability to Schedule Content

Instagram also introduced a more organised view of Drafts, allowing users to rename and schedule them, which sounds a lot like Meta’s Facebook which also enables the scheduling of content. Additionally, users now have the capability to zoom in and search their Camera Roll while browsing for specific photos and videos.
6. New Reels Metric

For content creators monitoring metrics, Instagram, and Facebook are introducing a fresh Reels metric called “Replays”, which will be amalgamated with “Initial Plays” to present a comprehensive “Plays” count. Although this figure slightly inflates Reels’ numbers, as a user watching a Reel multiple times still counts as one user, the “Initial Plays” metric remains valuable for creators to gauge their reach in terms of individual users. Meta also mentioned that creators will eventually have the ability to observe the number of viewers for their Reel through an interactive real-time Retention Chart.
What We See From This Update

Discussing one of the most noteworthy additions in this update — Instagram’s custom AI stickers— we can see that Meta’s AI is seamlessly integrated into Instagram, enhancing the transformation of photos into stickers. This integration offers users more creative freedom on the platform, eliminating the need for external tools to achieve similar effects. While Instagram introduced AI-driven stickers in 2017, which are digital graphics enhancing Stories with interactivity and fun, the latest update takes it a step further by allowing users to better personalise these stickers from photos. And despite Apple having a similar capability previously, Instagram’s new custom AI stickers are expected to be well-received for their added convenience, particularly among Android users.
Looking at the broader array of these new features, Instagram substantially enhance the content creation experience for creators. Beyond Instagram’s custom AI stickers facilitating greater creativity, the update improves editing capabilities for a diverse range of content. These advancements align with the increasing popularity of content creators on Instagram, and showcasing a growing acceptance of AI-generated tools. The introduction of these features aims to elevate content creation and encourage users to share their thoughts more creatively, ultimately fostering increased engagement on the platform.
A Final Say
These new features on Instagram have been rolling out gradually since November 16. It might take a bit of time for these updates to reach all Instagram users, so you might not notice them immediately. Nevertheless, in due course, the update will become available on your Instagram, and these new features are undoubtedly useful, assisting you in crafting creative content to connect with the audience you wish to share it with.
