These NFTs offer competitive advantages and can be traded via Illuvium’s decentralised marketplace, IlluvDEX.
3. Axie Infinity: A Philippine Play-to-Earn Phenomenon
Popularised in the Philippines, Axie Infinity has become a P2E phenomenon that involves collecting, owning, and breeding digital pets called Axies. These creatures engage in strategic card battles against monsters or other players, creating a diverse gaming experience.

Axie Infinity: Origins was introduced in 2022 as a card-based strategy game with a real-time combat system and free starter Axies. It leverages Web3 technologies such as NFTs and GameFi to build upon the Unreal Engine 5’s Avalanche subnet. Shrapnel’s innovative gameplay unfolds in a future world where a catastrophic asteroid collision with the moon has led to Earth being bombarded by lunar meteorites. Players compete to control a valuable substance amidst the chaos.

The game introduces an automated combat system where players arrange their battle lineup before conflicts. It involves six heroes, each with codenames, the ability to use pets, and equipped weapons.
Set in the year 2084, Gas Heroes plans to adopt STEPN’s GMT token at launch and introduce decentralised voting mechanisms. While the game is still under development, it aims to provide a dynamic and strategic gaming experience. The aim is to appeal to players who want a blend of social interaction and competitive gameplay.
6. Blocklords: Crypto Game with a Medieval Strategy
Blocklords is a mediaeval strategy game that’s been in development by MetaKing Studios since 2019. This game is one of the most anticipated upcoming crypto gaming projects. Blocklords was conceived by David Johansson, a former Hollywood and Free-to-Play (F2P) game director who envisions a massively MMO mediaeval metaverse. This project combines the best features of grand strategy games allowing players to create and own their characters and backstories. Blocklords operates on the ETH-based layer 2 blockchain Immutable (IMX).
Despite being in the development phase, the early community beta launched in 2023 has already seen success among its 5,000 players. The game’s developers have outlined a range of features, including progression and dynasty systems, an in-game store, turf wars, and both Player-vs-Environment (PVE) and Player-vs-Player (PVP) modes. Leveraging Web3 technology, Blocklords enables players to trade, buy, and monetise their in-game experiences, with heroes functioning as tradable digital assets outside the game.
