Huawei has officially unveiled its Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, the world’s first dual-hinged, triple-screen foldable smartphone. After weeks of anticipation, the device launched in China with a premium price tag reflecting the aspirational value proposition by the company.
Firstly, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate features an inverse dual-hinge design that folds in a “Z” shape, allowing it to transition between various screen configurations. For example, users can transform the device from a compact 6.4-inch smartphone to a massive 10.2-inch tablet when fully unfolded.
Here is a complete breakdown of Huawei Mate XT Ultimate’s design, hardware, specs, price and AI-driven features.
Everything to Know About Huawei Mate XT Ultimate
Design and Display

As mentioned above, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate introduces a unique inverse dual-hinge design that allows the phone to fold in a “Z” shape. This design enables multiple configurations, such as:
- Single Screen: When collapsed, it functions as a traditional phone with a 6.4-inch screen (2232 x 1008 pixels), perfect for one-handed use.
- Dual Screen Mode: Partially unfolded, the phone provides a 7.9-inch display (2232 x 2048 pixels), ideal for multitasking or media consumption.
- Full Tablet Mode: Fully unfolded, it boasts a 10.2-inch display (2232 x 3184 pixels), comparable to other foldable phones on the market, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, turning the phone into a tablet-like device for an immersive experience.
The OLED panel also supports 1.07 billion colours, a P3 wide colour gamut, 1440 Hz PWM dimming, and 240Hz touch response, making it visually stunning across all configurations.
In addition to its unique “Z” shape folding feature, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate boasts a luxurious design with a vein-textured frame, developed through a meticulous 78-step process involving 80 layers of fine steel. The device is available in two striking colours: Ruihong (Red Gold) and Dark Black, featuring genuine plain leather for a premium feel.
Hardware and Specs

Moreover, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate boasts top-tier hardware, such as a 5,600mAh battery, supporting 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. Its camera setup is equally impressive, with the device featuring a triple-camera array on the rear with a 50MP lead camera, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and a 12MP periscope camera capable of 5.5x optical zoom and 50x digital zoom. An 8MP selfie camera is also housed within the left-most screen in its tablet mode.

Advanced Hinge System and Durability
Despite covering the innovative design and impressive specs, the main highlight is Huawei’s “Tiangong” hinge system, designed to support inward and outward folds. The mechanism uses two tracks for smooth transitions between the device’s various modes.
Huawei has also incorporated innovative materials like Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) for the internal display and non-Newtonian fluid for the outer display, increasing flexibility and durability. According to the company, the hinge is made of 1,900 MPa ultra-strong rocket steel, ensuring long-lasting performance.
AI-Driven Features

Like many other smartphone manufacturers like Apple and Samsung, Huawei is making efforts to integrate artificial intelligence in its handsets. The phone runs on HarmonyOS 4.2, featuring an upgraded Celia assistant powered by the Pangu Large AI model. This assistant offers advanced capabilities such as AI voice editing, split-screen multitasking, and real-time translation.
Other notable AI features include:
- AI Senior Editor: Enhances content creation with natural language understanding for voice-based editing.
- AI Info Consultant: Provides split-screen mode for real-time answers and summaries of longer articles.
- AI Photo Editor: Includes AI Image Expansion, AI Removal, and AI Cloud Enhancement for advanced photo manipulation.
- XMAGE Imaging: Ensures optimised post-capture processing with improved light and shadow rendering.
Price and Availability
Despite a relatively high price tag, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate has already generated significant interest in China, with reports of 4 million pre-orders on retailer Vmall before pricing was released. For context, here’s the price tag for the phone:
- 256GB for $2,809
- 512GB for $3,089
- 1TB for $3,370
While the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is currently exclusive to the Chinese market, its international appeal and innovative features will likely attract global attention in the future. The International Data Corporation (IDC) notes that despite U.S. sanctions, Huawei remains a leader in the foldable smartphone race, while Apple’s first foldable device will only be released in 2025.
Parting Notes

With everything considered, Huawei has definitely leapfrogged its American counterparts in terms of design (read triple fold). The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is definitely going to be a conversation starter at gatherings and wherever one can show it off. Probably, that’s what the makers were striving to achieve too. For the longest time, Apple thrived on this aspirational value proposition.
However, it’s worth cautioning that looks can be deceptive. It’s safe to say that no one has perfected the foldable phone design. Of course, it’s become better than the first-generation foldable phones. The problem, however, is long-term usage. It may be a little anecdotal, but this writer has seen several customers express dissatisfaction with foldable phones after long-term use. Some common issues that have plagued such devices include creases at the fold, display quality not being up to the mark, and so on.
From a macro perspective, it’s important to talk about the politics of the business. Huawei was one of the biggest firms—or at least publicly known firms—to feel the heat of the US-China trade wars and subsequent sanctions. If reports are to be believed, the buzz in China is not just about a unique new mobile handset but also about how a local company is now outdoing global giants, especially Apple, in terms of design and innovation. Huawei’s product launch was trending on Weibo (China’s Twitter equivalent) at the number two spot for more than 10 hours, with 91 million views and over 6,000 comments, according to reports. So, that’s something, isn’t it?
Will we see other brands trying to replicate the same? We believe at least its Chinese counterparts, which have a larger global presence at the moment, may try to pull it off. But again, Huawei appears to have set the benchmark for next-generation foldable smartphones, combining advanced hardware, innovative design, and AI-driven software features.
While its high price will limit its market to a select few, its groundbreaking technology makes it a device to definitely watch out for.
