Apple has announced end-to-end encryption for iCloud, a move that will shield user data from both cyber criminals and law enforcement. This means that what you save on your iCloud can truly be for your eyes only, accessible only on your device. The FBI has expressed its frustration with the new security measure, calling it a hindrance to their ability to protect the American people. However, privacy advocates have praised the move as essential and overdue.
This enhanced security, called Advanced Data Protection, now covers iCloud backups, notes, and photos. It means that Apple will not have control of the encryption keys and will not be able to access user data. If you lose your password or access to your account, Apple will not be able to recover your data. This means that users must set up a plan B to access their iCloud account, such as designating a recovery contact or printing out a recovery key.
The extra layer of privacy also means that Apple will no longer be able to comply with requests for data from law enforcement. The FBI has called for a backdoor key, or “lawful access by design,” to be able to access user data. Privacy advocates, including the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, have applauded the move and said it will improve human rights.
Apple has a reputation for being security conscious and not profiting from user data. The company has previously taken public stances on security, such as pushing back against the FBI’s request to crack the iPhone 5c belonging to the perpetrator of the 2015 San Bernardino shooting. The introduction of end-to-end encryption for iCloud solidifies Apple’s commitment to security and privacy.
