The Best Endings in Assassin’s Creed
Endings are supposed to be grandiose, right? Wrong! Some Assassin’s Creed games end on a light note, while others are over-the-top. Ultimately, it depends on the creators’ ability to portray realistic characters with deep backgrounds. Though, a narrative-driven campaign is key to achieving a great climax. Naturally, the stories behind these games are steeped in blood, strife, and betrayals.
So, the games aren’t lacking when it comes to a great storyline. Heck, you can expect the final missions of these games to be explosive, at least for the most part. You’ll feel sad, intrigued, and sometimes angered by the ending of certain Assassin’s Creed games. To be specific, Assassin’s Creed Origins’ ending was slightly frustrating because Bayek and Aya split up. On the bright side, games like GTA V had better endings.
1. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
This is a pirate game that’s anything but focused on spying or escaping your pursuers. Rather, you’re a pirate! While the occasional missions will force you to do some espionage, you’ll be bombing other pirate ships the majority of the time. To give you an idea of the campaign, it’s 1715, and you control Edward Kenway, a head-strong captain in his prime. You, along with other pirates, rule the Caribbean, where you’ve established an illegal Republic for pillagers and looters.
- Control a Rebel Assassin: Edward Kenway is a rogue Assassin who’s also a charismatic captain. Yet, that doesn’t mean he’s not capable of extreme violence, death, and destruction. The closest character to Edward in terms of brutality is Eivor from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
- A Great Multiplayer Experience: Create your multiplayer mode by using the Game Lab feature to assign costumes, powers, and everything in between. Yes, you’ll be able to play as iconic pirates in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, including Anne Bonny and Black Beard.
- Huge Sandbox with Tons of Activities to Enjoy: The huge sandbox is extremely fun to explore because there are tons of islands to go through. You’ll be able to explore locations such as Kingston, Nassau, and 75 other locations. What’s more? You can hunt whales and big fish to get resources, which you can use to upgrade your ships and buy new weapons. Additionally, you’ll be able to loot underwater shipwrecks, assassinate Templars even though you’ve gone rogue, hunt down rare animals, and flee to hidden coves.
Why We Love This Ending: We love the ending because Edward Kenway ultimately turns a new leaf. This is because he has lost all of his friends at the end of his journey, so he decides to take care of his daughter in his final days. It’s an emotional ending to a titular experience.
2. Assassin’s Creed Rogue
Assassin’s Creed Rogue is one of the darkest titles in the series because it follows the activists of Shay, a former Assassin who now hunts Assassins. Explore New York City and the frozen north on your way to destroying the Order of Assassins. Along the way, you can enjoy in-game bonus content such as:
- The Armor of Sir Gunn: Explore North America in all its frozen glory as you find the remains of Sir Gunn and his treasure.
- The Siege of Fort de Sable: Enjoy a raiding mission that takes you to the North Atlantic of the New World.
- The Master Templar Pack: This is the best Templar pack in the game, which introduces weapons, outfits, and many other items.
It’s 18th-century North America, and Shay Cormac has just been betrayed by his former brothers following a mission that went sideways. Shay undergoes a dark transformation that sets him on a direct collision course with his former brothers and sisters. At the end of the game, you’ll become the best Assassin hunter in history.
Why We Love This Ending: This is the only game in the series where the Templars emerge as victors over the Order of Assassins. The ending is pessimistic and dark, showing Shay’s refusal to let go of his revenge.
3: Assassin’s Creed Origins
This game follows the story of Bayek of Siwa, a protector whose skills have been honed through years of battles and skirmishes. During the early stages of the game, Bayek loses his only child and, thus, goes down a path of revenge. He’s encouraged by his wife to claim the lives of the Templars who murdered his boy, and so Bayek’s vengeance begins. Besides these points, we also love the game for other reasons, such as:
- Discover the Nile: Uncover the secrets of the pyramids and fight your way through ancient cults. Along the way, you’ll meet iconic legends like Cleopatra, Caesar, and Ptolemy XIII.
- Embrace Many RPG Elements: Assassin’s Creed Origins boasts intricate RPG elements with great crafting mechanics. You’ll update everything from your ammo pouches to your bow stats, like range and damage.
- Multiple Challenging Quests Await: There are many gripping stories to go through, including memorable characters. You’ll meet desperate bums and high-born individuals who are borderline royalty.
Why We Love This Ending: This isn’t like Super Mario games, where the ending is free of bloodshed. At the end of the game, Bayek successfully assassinates Flavius, the man responsible for his son’s death. His wife Aya, on the other hand, assassinated Julius Caesar, who wants to control the populace using the Pieces of Eden.
4: Assassin’s Creed II
This is one of the best adult games of 2009, so it was a critical masterpiece with strong ratings on Steam. Many players might not remember its ending, which was ahead of its time. Ultimately, the campaign is about family, conspiracies, and revenge; It’s set in the Renaissance era of Italy. Sure, the visuals are old-school, but beneath it all, you’ll find a game that stays true to its roots. That is, you’re a spymaster and true assassin who has embraced the shadows. Other features of the game that we love are:
- Control Ezio: You control Ezio, a young noble whose family was betrayed and murdered. The entire campaign is his revenge story, where he hunts down his family’s oppressors. Thankfully, this character is charismatic, being good with the ladies and even his allies.
- Explore Renaissance Italy: Renaissance Italy is set in the 15th century, when only families with political influence got the best jobs and opportunities. You’ll explore the likes of Florence and Venice, which are rich in culture, art, and people. In this case, the masses are being oppressed, and Ezio is the catalyst for their freedom.
- Dynamic Crowds for Stealth Plays: Blending in with crowds in Venice and Florence is effortless due to the new system that enables dynamic crowds.
Why We Love This Ending: Ezio overcomes his desire for revenge and instead spares Borgia’s life at the end of the game.
5: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is an action-adventure RPG where you control either Alexios or Kassandra, who can be mercenaries seeking glory or revenge. It’s really up to the player how they want to tackle the campaign, down to the side quests, romantic options, and many more. Did we also mention that you’ll explore Ancient Greece? It’s a region that’s so beautiful, apples grow freely, and the water is so clear, it’s blue from afar. Other highlights you should know about are:
- Forge Your Destiny: Your decisions shape the outcome of the game, so choose wisely. The dialogue system lets you customise your quest lines and much more. Heck, you’ll dialogue with vendors to purchase more gear and weapons and even bargain for upgrades.
- Fight Large-Scale Battles: Fight huge wars between Athens and Sparta as you battle for supremacy. There will be hundreds of soldiers, and at times, you’ll even board ships in a bid to sabotage your enemies’ resources.
- Explore a Beautiful World: You’ll explore lush forests, walk on volcanic islands, or swim and experience the great water physics. Nevertheless, this is a war-torn land that has been shaped by both gods and men.
Why We Love This Ending: There are multiple endings in this title. Eventually, you’ll be given the chance to let go of your revenge for the greater good.
6. Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
This is one of the best games in the series. Especially as it allows players to pull off joint assassinations with other Assassins. In this game, Ezio controls a legion of Assassins, who are willing to help him crush the Templars. However, the events in this game take place in Rome instead of Venice or Florence.
- New Multiplayer Mode: You can now choose from a variety of characters who wield different weapons. These characters also have their own signature killing styles and fighting abilities. So, there’s a lot of playstyles to explore.
- Use Secret Weapons to Change the Tides: You can use secret weapons like poison darts, parachutes, double hidden blades, guns, and flying contraptions that were inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci.
- Lead Your Order to Victory: Train and level up your Assassins to execute high-risk missions and earn resources for the Order. You can also call on them to back you up in combat, after which they’ll disappear like smoke in the wind.
Why We Love This Ending: This ending is memorable because it concludes Ezio and Desmond’s chapters. Ezio battles his arch nemesis, Cesare Borgia, who murdered his uncle, Mario, and some others.
7. Assassin’s Creed Revelations
Assassin’s Creed Revelations follows Ezio as he walks the path of his mentor, Altair, on a journey of discovery. The journey is merciless, taking our protagonist to Constantinople, the heart of the Ottoman Empire. Templars control the region, so all your moves are calculated. Some other features of the game that we enjoyed are:
- Control a Master Assassin: Ezio has mastered all of the arts of the Assassins and is now innovating more creative ways to lay waste to his enemies. He’s wiser, quicker, and deadlier than ever with abilities such as free running and hook-blade combat. Heck, you’ll even be able to craft bombs later in the game.
- Explore Desmond’s Past: Reach the deepest parts of the Animus and uncover Desmond’s past and future on your way there.
Why We Love This Ending: Ezio gets a good ending by rescuing his love interest, Sofia, from Prince Ahmet and retrieving Altair’s remains from a vault. He’s also relieved from the burden of being Desmond’s connection to the past.
Our Final Say: Revenge Is a Recurring Theme
Some endings of certain games are lacklustre, if you ask us. However, as you might have noticed, revenge and vengeance are the go-to themes for Assassin’s Creed games. Hopefully, their future games won’t return to those themes anytime soon. You can also read about upcoming Remedy games. Thankfully, we’ve got other great lists for you to check out. For one, if you’re a fan of anime instead, here are some games you should try out.
