Director James Cameron’s highly anticipated sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” has made a strong start at the box office, earning $17 million in its Thursday night opening in the U.S. and Canada, according to distributor Walt Disney Co. The film has also brought in $50.4 million internationally since its release on Wednesday.
While the domestic total falls short of recent Disney release “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which earned $28 million in its Thursday night debut in November, box office experts predict “The Way of Water” will have a strong run in theaters, potentially earning at least $140 million from domestic theaters during its opening weekend.
One of the big questions surrounding the film is whether it will be able to recoup its massive production and marketing costs. In an interview with GQ magazine, Cameron stated that “The Way of Water” needs to make $2 billion just to break even. It is worth noting that first-night screening sales do not always accurately predict a film’s final box office performance, particularly during the busy holiday season.
“The Way of Water” is the sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time, “Avatar,” which was released in 2009 and remains the all-time box office champion with $2.9 billion in global ticket sales. The new film follows the characters of Jake Sully and Neytiri, played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, respectively, 10 years after the events of the first film. Now married with five children, their peaceful life is disrupted when the Sky People, or humans, return and target Jake. The Sully family seeks refuge with the oceanic Metkayina clan and must learn the ways of the water to survive.
