If you’re an avid ARPG player, you’re in luck because one of the coolest action role-playing games is predicted to drop sometime next year. Black Myth: Wukong has been teased on a yearly basis ever since its announcement in 2020, and we think it’s finally closing in on the final development stages. While we haven’t received a confirmed Black Myth: Wukong release date just yet, developers had a live hands-on event this year, and we can confirm that it exceeded many expectations.

Black Myth: Wukong Official Release Date
With Game Science organising a hands-on event in Hangzhou, China, in 2023, we know the game is not far from being complete. However, they have still not released an official Black Myth: Wukong release date, which inadvertently adds to the hype. With many fans eagerly waiting for the ARPG inspired by Chinese folklore, the small snippet of gameplay players got to see was definitely impressive.
One of the standout features of Black Myth: Wukong is the resemblance to the Dark Souls games from FromSoftware, yet it’s a stark contrast when it comes to characters, weapon styles and offensive capabilities. It should be noted that Game Science is a Chinese company, and while the game is inspired by the renowned Souls games, they have added their own unique aspects to make it one of a kind.
The first trailer for Black Myth: Wukong was released in 2020, and Game Science made it a trend to release developmental updates every year on August 20th. These updates gradually kept increasing in gameplay material, which is why fans are waiting for the Black Myth: Wukong release date announcement from Game Science.
Black Myth: Wukong Hands-On Event By Game Science
Now that we know Black Myth: Wukong’s release date hasn’t officially been announced yet, let’s talk about what we do know: The hands-on event in China. This event was organised by the developers to let the public have a taste of what they have in store. It was a 45-minute event where they invited over a thousand players to come play a short demo of the game before its release.
This event for Black Myth: Wukong could also double as a focus group since Game Science will be making the necessary changes to the game in accordance with the feedback received. The trial version included three different bosses of varying difficulties and skills and types of equipment that players could achieve in the mid-game for the actual game.

Character-Based Gameplay: Skills, Stances, Transformations and More
We’re going to be starting off with the protagonist’s attributes. The demo event included four spells, namely Immobilize, Stone Solid, Ring of Fire, and the Pluck of Many. For the stances, there were three different stances players could be in Smash Form, Pillar Form, and Thrust Form. Finally, the transformations included Fireblade Wolf and another form with poisonous attacks (Possibly a scorpion form). However, it should be noted that these things are subject to change, and we won’t have confirmation until we know Black Myth: Wukong’s release date officially.
Besides your basic attributes, players got to see a glimpse of the weapon they’ll be using, which is a staff called the Golden Cudgel. This weapon could be considered pretty unique since it’s different from the hack-and-slash weapons we’re used to. The staff can change in length and rhythm based on how it’s used. In trained hands, you could keep enemies at range while you build up your focus before jumping into melee range and hammering their health bars away.
As for the fighting aspect of the game, players can use light or heavy attacks. Learning these is the bread and butter for every action role-playing game. You build up your focus bar using light attacks and expend this currency to execute heavy attacks. There will be tons of other interactions like complex combos, counter-attacks, and evasive manoeuvres that players will be able to learn in-game.
Black Myth: Wukong Eerily Similar to Dark Souls?
It is true that Black Myth: Wukong has taken inspiration from the popular Dark Souls game series by FromSoftware. However, we mentioned previously as well that the gameplay and plot setting will be wildly different.
Black Myth: Wukong’s fighting sequences are not based solely on dodging enemy attacks and attacking them with your sword or axe. To get good at the game, players must learn a combination of fighting elements like which stance to be in, how certain spells sync with their attacks, and most importantly, transformations and when to use them.
That said, just because the action sequences might be difficult does not mean that the bosses are easy. The bosses themselves have certain particularities that you must learn and play around in order to take those giants down.

It’s true that we haven’t got confirmation on Black Myth: Wukong’s release date just yet, but how long will they delay it after a hands-on event anyway? Now, it’s all about the waiting game.
