In a totally unexpected turn of events, Captain Blood, the action-adventure game inspired by Rafael Sabatini’s 1922 novel Captain Blood: His Odyssey, is marking its long-awaited return in the Fall of this year to mainstream consoles after a decade more of development hell.
For context, Age of Pirates: Captain Blood, a supposed spin-off of the Sea Dogs franchise, was headed for release in 2006, but repeated development issues due to bad management decisions and then protracted legal fights with Playlogic caused the end of a Captain Blood re-release in 2010, despite rumours of completed discs printing and preparation to ship copies to retailers.
Fortunately, for the ever-eager pirate gaming community fanbase, Publisher SNEG and developers Seawolf Studio and General Arcade remarkably announced the game will be coming to current-gen consoles, such as the Xbox Series, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC this coming Fall.
Captain Blood Arrives with HD Graphics on Multiple Consoles
Besides the sudden announcement, we received a trailer for the swashbuckling pirate adventure set in the Caribbean during the 17th-century courtesy of IGN.
While any release of your favourite game is exciting, it’s worth noting that you take this trailer with a grain of salt, as the gameplay trailer depicts an older and less polished feel compared to recent gameplay trailers such as Dragon Ball Sparking Zero.
If you were to be overanalytical, this Captain Blood gameplay trailer looks based on the last build we saw in 2010, which may explain why some models look like they were scrapped from older consoles, as this game was basically an Xbox 360-era video game that never released.
Brief Refresher on Captain Blood
Plot and Story
Nevertheless, the re-release of Captain Blood is a welcoming return for old-timers like myself to experience the story of Bob Morlock once again. For new and forgetful players, the story follows Bob Morlock, a video game designer who finds himself transported into the universe of his own creation.

There, he assumes the name (Captain Blood), intending to hunt down and reabsorb five clones of himself that have escaped across the galaxy accidentally created during a hyperspace incident to regain his lost humanity by recovering his original genetic material before he severs all ties to the human species and is lost to his self-made digital realm forever.

Gameplay and Key Features
Besides the protagonist’s priority goal, players can enjoy a non-linear space exploration by travelling to different planets and interacting with various alien species with the bio-mechanical spaceship called “The Ark”.
As to how you interact with the alien species, players utilise a unique icon-based interface called UPCOM (Universal Protocol of Communication), which players use to communicate with aliens, decipher their languages and negotiate with different species to gather clues and progress in their central mission of discovering the clones.
Besides, players must solve puzzles and understand alien cultures and behaviours to manage their spaceship’s resources, including energy and navigation capabilities, to ensure successful voyages across the galaxy.
Lastly, the dynamic music by Jean Michel Jarre contributes significantly to the game atmosphere, pioneering adaptive music in video games like the now-famous Genshin Impact/HOYO-MiX.
Will Captain Blood Prove Successful Decades Later?
There is no definitive answer that Captain Blood will succeed or fail at attracting the attention of old and new alike. However, it is still a landmark title in the history of video games, celebrated for its creative vision and pioneering use of technology.
For those interested in the evolution of video game design and the exploration of alien worlds, the re-release of Captain Blood remains a fascinating and rewarding pick-up into the unknown.
