Dive into the best games like Brutal Legend to unleash your inner metalhead. The games in this list will take you to worlds that share many similarities with Double Fine’s beloved title.
Brutal Legend is one of the most unique games that we’ve ever seen on any platform. It’s definitely one of the most underrated Xbox 360 games as well. Its brilliant cast, unmatched soundtrack, and unique gameplay elements made it one of the most amazing titles across platforms.
Those are the very reasons why it’s difficult to find games like Brutal Legend. Although Double Fine has provided some of the most outstanding titles in the last two decades, none of them was as unique, quirky, and glorious as Brutal Legend as well.
Although there aren’t any direct alternatives to this metal-fused title, there are some games that share similarities in terms of theme and gameplay.
6. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine
As one of the best Warhammer 40K games, Space Marine puts you right in the middle of planetary warfare against a horde of Orks. As a biologically-engineered supersoldier, your task is to annihilate the enemy, preferably with a Sabaton album playing in the background.
Warhammer 40.000: Space Marine might not be the first one to come to mind when we talk about the best games like Brutal Legend. Although these don’t have many similarities, Space Marine’s metal-powered gameplay feels like it would be perfect for Brutal Legend fans as well.
5. Minecraft Legends
At first glance, you might feel like Minecraft Legends has no place in the list of best games like Brutal Legend. Although you’re correct in terms of thematic similarities, it’s worth noting that both games come with highly similar RTS elements.
If you like Brutal Legend’s stage battles, you’ll like what Minecraft: Legends brings to the table. That’s because both of these games allow you to keep fighting while commanding your army right on the battlefield.
4. Psychonauts
Those who love Jack Black’s metal-powered adventure in the lands of metal will also love taking the role of Raz in Psychonauts. If you somehow loved Brutal Legend and never played Psychonauts before, it’s time to dive into Double Fine’s magnum opus.
It clearly doesn’t share strong similarities with our favourite metal game. But Psychonauts is still one of the best games like Brutal Legend with its quirky humour, amazing characters, and rich gameplay mechanics. It’s all about diving into humans’ subconscious and braving some of the strangest missions in any game.
3. Overlord 2
When it comes to strategic gameplay mechanics of the game, Overlord 2 is one of the best games like Brutal Legend. Although it has its blatant issues, the cult classic will definitely provide you with an RTS injection that’s similar to Double Fine’s beloved game.
Of course, it doesn’t have Ozzy Osbourne giving you tips or headbangers fighting for your cause. But it’s still a great game when it comes to commanding your soldiers right on the battlefield, similar to the stage battles of Brutal Legend. It’s also one of the best nostalgic games to play right now.
2. Metal: Hellsinger
Metal: Hellsinger stands out among the best games like Brutal Legend, with its addictive gameplay based entirely on metal music. With more than ten thousand reviews on Steam, Metal: Hellsinger will have you overcome hell and high water with its bulletproof rhythm-based gameplay.
This incredible metal game boasts an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Valve’s storefront as well. Developed by The Outsiders, Metal: Hellsinger is the game you need if you like Brutal Legend. However, keep in mind that it doesn’t have any RTS elements.
1. Valfaris
Valfaris is the ultimate game for heavy metal fans. It’s also the perfect game if you enjoy the visceral gameplay of Brutal Legend.
Coming from the indie studio Steel Mantis, Valfaris will put you in the shoes of an avenging prince sworn to take his father, the king’s life. In this wretched quest, Valfaris offers a long and challenging journey with an incredible metal soundtrack. All of these aspects render it one of the darkest indie games to play, too.
Similar to other games like Brutal Legend on this list, it doesn’t have RTS or open-world gameplay elements, though.
Final Thoughts
As you can see, there aren’t many games like Brutal Legend. As one of the most celebrated game studios, Double Fine achieved something truly unique with Brutal Legend.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like there will be a sequel coming from Double Fine anytime soon. It has been more than a decade since the first game came out. Seeing the current landscape filled with games like Palworld, we’ll just have to stick to the ones above and wait for new metal games to arrive in the future.
