Google I/O 2024, Google‘s annual developer conference, is taking place on Tuesday, May 14 at 10 am PT. As with the beginning of Google I/O in 2016, the tech giant will host the 2024 edition at the concert venue next to its headquarters, at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California, with “a small live audience and a live stream for everyone else to watch virtually.”
Moreover, in-person attendees and invitees can join the second day of live programming beginning on May 15. For people interested in the event, you can pre-register here. The tech giant will make the agenda and session list available closer to Google I/O 2024.
Google I/O 2024 Will Heavily Focused on AI
To no one’s surprise, the theme of Google I/O 2024 will heavily revolve around AI, especially with their recent drama with Gemini, its new flagship AI model. For context, Google CEO Sundar Pichai labelled the event “completely unacceptable” as the company is still seeking solutions to rectify the diversity problem in their pictures.
Getting back to the topic, we expect Google to announce the latest details regarding Android 15, which the tech giant announced as the first Developer Preview of just last month. Moreover, additional information about Android AdServices is much welcome in Google I/O 2024, as the company hopes to build new technology to keep user information private, enable publishers and developers to keep online content free and collaborate with the industry to shape new internet privacy standards.
In addition, we expect the announcement of a new Pixel 8a smartphone in Google I/O 2024, as the most recent leaks were back in October 2023 when images of a curvier-looking phone surfaced online. As Google confirmed the existence of Pixel 8a two days ago, we could only speculate what features the tech giant is gating in their new phone, considering Google lock software features in its Pixel 8.
Lastly, expect a Sundar-led keynote to start Google I/O 2024 as per tradition and updates to Google’s various operating systems (Gmail, Google Photos, and more).
What Previous Google I/O Editions Brought to the Spotlight
Looking ahead to the two-month wait for Google I/O 2024, let’s nose-dive into what announcements made headlines in the previous I/O editions. Firstly, Bard, Google’s AI language model answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, occupied most of the limelight in 2023 as Google announced that its AI-powered chatbot, capable of advanced maths, reasoning skills, coding capabilities, was now available to over 180 countries and territories, regardless of whether you were on the waitlist.
Following up, the announcement of a noise cancelling Google’s Pixel Buds Pro in I/O 2022 was the first of its kind as Google wanted its own version of Apple’s AirPods Pro. Then, Google stated that its Buds Pro has a custom audio chip, supporting Bluetooth multipoint, letting them connect to two devices simultaneously.
Lastly, another announcement which made headlines in 2022 was the announcement of VR glasses. However, this venture was one of Google’s massive failures, as Google reportedly killed its Project Iris augmented reality glasses in 2023. According to reports, layoffs, including Google’s head of VR/AR Clay Bavor, and strategies shifting during development caused the termination of the project.
