Bethesda’s highly-anticipated space opera Starfield arrived nearly three months ago. After a storm of heated controversies, discussions, and more, how many copies has Starfield sold?
Xbox often refrains from disclosing sales numbers following the launch of their titles. That’s why it’s a guessing game when it comes to the commercial success of certain Xbox exclusives.
Starfield might be one of the biggest Xbox-exclusive releases in the last decade. Naturally, its commercial performance hasn’t also appeared in any public reports. Still, we can come up with a close guess on how many copies Starfield sold.
How Many Copies Has Starfield Sold?
While it’s not possible to pinpoint the exact number, Starfield has probably sold at least two million copies at launch. The number might seem small as Starfield is its developers’ biggest release yet. We also know that players sank millions of hours into it, even more than Baldur’s Gate 3. In short, the two million estimate seems logical.
On the other hand, it’s important to note that a great majority of people play Starfield on Xbox Game Pass. Naturally, this makes it difficult to estimate the number of copies Starfield sold. Because Microsoft’s gaming subscription service doesn’t disclose the numbers of concurrent players, let alone sales.
There aren’t any third-party apps and software that analyse the player data of Game Pass as well. But despite the lack of info, we still know that Starfield sold millions of copies as it’s one of the biggest game releases of 2023.
Starfield Is One of the Best-Selling Xbox Games
The best-selling video games in the United States in 2023 give us an idea about Starfield’s commercial performance.
Since 2023 was a year filled with colossal releases; game purchases are scattered across ambitious titles on different platforms. The year started with the highly-anticipated Hogwarts Legacy, which became the highest-selling video game in the USA and many other markets around the world.
Despite mixed reception, Starfield is also on the list. Although we still don’t know the official numbers, Starfield sold millions of copies since its launch on Steam and Game Pass. It ranks as the 11th best-selling game ever. Here’s the full list:
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- Madden NFL 24
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
- Diablo 4
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
- EA Sports FC 24
- Starfield
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Resident Evil 4
However, Starfield couldn’t enter the top 10 best-selling PC and console releases when we included the UK market sales. In the US and UK markets combined, Starfield sold fewer copies than games like Metroid Prime, Dead Space Remake, Sons of the Forest, WWE 2K23, and MLB The Show 23. Unsurprisingly, Hogwarts Legacy still tops the leader as the best-selling game of 2023 in both markets.
How Many Players Does Starfield Have?
The average of concurrent Starfield players is more than 10 thousand. At the time of writing, the game had a peak concurrent player count of 17,811 on Steam, based on the data presented by SteamCharts.
But similar to many other games on Xbox Game Pass, it’s impossible to find the exact number of players across all platforms. Since Game Pass doesn’t disclose this information, we don’t have information about Starfield’s active player base on Game Pass.
Final Thoughts
At the time of writing, we still don’t know how many copies Starfield sold. But the data of other games and the best-selling lists point towards at least 2 million copies. Moreover, Bethesda announced that more than 10 million players jumped into their space epic.
Although the concurrent number of players has naturally decreased drastically, there’s still a great number of players enjoying Starfield with mods. Despite the lack of info regarding the copies Starfield sold, the gaming community considered a mixed bag of stellar moments and astronomic issues.
