Huawei has announced its latest open wireless headphones, FreeClip, “the truly wireless headphones with a unique design”. Before announcing this open-acoustic design, Huawei has several wireless earbuds, ranging from ordinary-looking pair of FreeBuds Pro 3 to the strange bean-shaped pair of Freebuds 5.
With this latest FreeClip, Huawei has definitely stood out from even the wilder wireless earbud shapes we’ve seen so far. Forward proposition. According to Huawei, it is the company’s response to users wanting an “audio listening experience that had all the technological strengths of contemporary in-ear wireless headphones but allowed them to stay attuned to their surroundings.”
Therefore, Huawei designed FreeClip with an “open-ear” design that looks very different and is more suited for sports, outdoor, or multitasking office environments. In addition, FreeClip is Huawei’s first symmetrical open-ear headphones in which the design, size and shape are identical for the left and right ears.

4 Things to Know About FreeClip
1) Design
According to Huawei, they have analysed thousands of ear shapes to collect over 10,000 data samples to find the best ergonomic fit for all types of ears. Thus, they designed the FreeClip earbuds into three parts: the Comfort Bean, the Acoustic Ball, and the C-bridge design.
For example, the Comfort Bean has an ergonomic bean shape that follows the curvature of the human ear. On the other hand, the Acoustic Ball is based on the shape of the authentic Cavum Concha model, resulting in an optimal size that does not cause any discomfort.
Lastly, the C-bridge design, the connection between the ball and the bean-shaped part, is an adaptive sensor feature that adjusts the clamping force of the shutter mechanism. As Huawei stated, they also measured the threshold of pressure on human ears to reach just the right amount of pressure, thus allowing the earbuds to clamp firmly on your ear without the user’s discomfort.
2) Battery Time and Charging Time
Taking Huawei’s words to heart, FreeClip can function for up to 32 hours (With charging from the case) and recharge fully in just 40 minutes, with 10 minutes of charging providing 3 hours of listening pleasure. Listed below are the exact specs for the battery capacity, charging method and more:
Battery Capacity:
Earbuds: 55 mAh (Minimum value each)
Charging Case: 510 mAh (Minimum value)
Charging Method:
Wired Charging: USB-C
Wireless Charging: Up to about 2 W
Charging Time:
Around 40 mins for the earbuds in the charging case
About 60 mins for the charging case without earbuds (Wired)
Approximately 150 mins for the charging case without earbuds (Wireless)
Battery Life:
Music Playback: 8 hours after a full charge and 36 hours when used with the charging case.
3) Splash, Water, and Dust Resistant
In addition, the FreeClip earbuds are splash, water and dust resistant with an IP54 rating. However, it is only limited to the earbuds as Huawei heavily emphasised that the IP54 dust- and water-resistance applies only to the earbuds themselves, not the charging case.
Moreover, they stated splash, dust, and water resistance are not permanent, and the performance may deteriorate due to daily wear and tear as FreeClip is splash, dust, and water resistant in normal conditions. Thus, users should avoid charging the device in a damp environment.
4) Colour, Price and Release Date
The unique-looking FreeClip earbuds will come in two different colour options, which are black and purple. As for the price and release date, the earbuds will cost a measly £179.99/€199, and the product will arrive in the UK and Europe in late December.

FreeClip earbuds are now available for preorder on Huawei’s website, and UK buyers will get a free Huawei Band 8 if they order between today and January 29.
Will the FreeClip Earbuds Take Off and Inspire Other Manufacturers?
Although it is too early to say so, the open-acoustic design will provide more natural ambient sound without compromising sound quality or causing sound loss compared to other standard earphones. Furthermore, this open-air architecture allows users to hear their music clearly on the go while prioritising their awareness of their surroundings.
Besides, Huawei has claimed that the FreeClip diverts away and counteracts the “stethoscope” effect caused by earbuds sticking into the ear, reducing ear canal blockage and hearing loss over the long term.
Lastly, the aesthetic and uniquely designed FreeClip may attract enthusiasts who prefer standing out with the latest tech, which may lead to a future trend, something every company would love to pioneer.
