Saber Interactive, the developer of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, and Focus Interactive, its publisher, have officially revealed the content of the game’s first major update. Following its full release on September 9th, this update addresses critical issues players have encountered, including crashes, server instability, and performance hiccups. The patch is anticipated to arrive later this week and promises improvements across multiple fronts, enhancing the player experience.

For context, the game officially launched on September 9th, 2023, with those who pre-ordered the Gold or Ultra Editions gaining early access. However, this early release came with a few hiccups. Players reported issues, particularly in co-op play, where server and matchmaking problems disrupted the multiplayer experience.
Despite these issues, Space Marine 2 has managed to break records in the Warhammer series. During its early access phase, the game attracted around 134,000 players. Upon full launch, that number surged to an impressive 225,690 concurrent players, breaking the previous franchise record set by Total War: Warhammer 3’s peak of 166,754. While the game may not reach the towering 458,000 concurrent player peak set by Helldivers 2, Space Marine 2’s launch has far exceeded expectations.
Issues Faced by Space Marine 2’s Early Access Players
As mentioned earlier, Space Marine 2 early release caused discontent among players as the game’s Co-op PvE and Multiplayer were the main appeal of the newest edition of the Warhammer series.
For example, the game allows for squad-based combat against hordes of Tyranids, with players teaming up to hack, slash, and shoot through intense missions. PvP options are available for those seeking a more competitive edge, but the co-op PvE mode is where the game truly shines. The mix of customisation options, teamwork strategies, and action has resonated well with fans of the Warhammer 40K universe.
Listed are the issues players have commonly reported:
- Cutscene Crash: Numerous crash issues, particularly those at the start of the game and during the first cutscene.
- Joining Server Bug: A bug that hindered co-op sessions and caused players to lose progress and rewards.
- CPU Overheating: Visual glitches and subpar performance and optimisation.
Space Marine 2’s First Update Includes

Due to early reports of technical issues, Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment announced a significant patch. Key updates include:
- Crash Fixes: Resolves issues like crashes at the start of the game and during the first cutscene.
- Server Improvements: Fixes the “joining server bug” that hindered co-op gameplay.
- Visual Bug Fixes: Enhances rendering quality and reduces glitches.
- CPU Overheating Fixes: Addresses overheating problems, especially on high-end hardware.
- Progression Issues: Fix bugs that cause players to lose rewards and progress.
The update aims to stabilise gameplay and enhance the experience for players on all platforms, ensuring smoother online sessions and reducing frustration.
In addition, the game’s developers have laid out an ambitious roadmap of future content, ensuring that Space Marine 2 continues to evolve. According to the roadmap, Season 2 kicks off in October 2024, bringing new enemy types, difficulty modes, and a fresh Operations map. They also hinted at future expansions with new storylines, missions, and enemies.
