There’s a boatload of reasons to be buzzing about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with a prime highlight being the simultaneous playability of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Outside of the main storyline, you can freely choose to control either of the two characters. The cherry on the cake? Spider-Man 2 character switch is works like GTA 5 ━ you can swap between Peter and Miles at the tap of a button.
We initially caught a glimpse of this feature in the gameplay video launched at the PlayStation Showcase, though its workings remained a bit of a mystery. However, Bryan Intihar, the game’s creative director, has now lifted the lid on this mechanic in a chat with Eurogamer.

Character Switching Is Instant

The recent gameplay reveal video showed a smooth switch from Peter Parker to Miles Morales with a mere button click. It’s now been confirmed that this wasn’t just a cinematic flourish ━ it’s a mechanic you can engage whenever you fancy.
According to Bryan Intihar, the power of the PlayStation 5 SSD allows for a near-instantaneous transition between characters. As players, all we need to do is hit a button to swap from Miles to Peter while exploring the open world.
Here’s what Intihar had to say about this nifty feature:
You’ll be able to – in the open world – freely switch between them with a simple button press. Being able to switch in the open world so quickly between the two characters is really, really awesome. Just being able to pick and choose who I want to play as for a certain activity… it’s been so awesome to have that feature. [It’s] something we probably wouldn’t have explored previously.
Bryan Intihar
This mechanic may ring a bell if you recall GTA 5, where you could swap instantaneously between Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. Thanks to Rockstar Games’ cleverly implemented idle moments, you’d catch up with each character in the midst of their real-life activities – be it Trevor downing a drink by a roadside or Michael in a spat with his missus.

Spider-Man 2 Open-World Matters

Intihar was keen to stress that the character swapping between Peter and Miles is confined to the open-world setting. So, this feature won’t be available during the game’s main missions or cinematic sequences. But really, any other approach wouldn’t make much sense. The ability to switch between our Spider-Men while freely roaming New York is indeed a cracking feature.
Spider-Man 2 character switch brings more to the table than what we saw in GTA 5, though. The key difference lies in the distinctive gameplay mechanics associated with Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Each character will boast a unique skill tree, which means their gameplay will differ significantly. For instance, Peter may have the upper hand in one-on-one combat, while Miles will likely boast superior speed.
The official release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is yet to be confirmed.
