If you ask any Pokemon trainers which Pokemon type they would have, many would respond with Dragon type Pokemon, as they are massively popular and one of the more formidable types in the series. From Dragon type Pokemon like Dragonite to Rayquaza to Dragon trainers such as Lance to Raihan, these glamorous beasts have gained a reputation for their stats and impressive moves under their belt.
In this year of the Dragon, our avid Dragon type Pokemon writers have gone through each single Dragon type Pokemon and taken into consideration an extent of components like stats, move pool, lore, and design quality to decide on a list of the top 10 Dragon type Pokemon of all time.
As a final note, our list will only contain non-legendary Dragon type Pokemon, as our writers will construct a legendary-only listicle in the near future.

Ranking the 10 Best Dragon Type Pokemon
10) Kommo-o

Although Kommo-o is one of the most inventive Dragon type Pokemon in the franchise with its introduction in Generation 7, the Dragon-Fighting Pokemon starts last on our list due to its troublesome double weakness to Fairy-type moves.
However, while he does have his share of counters, it is still a mighty dragon that makes excellent use of its dual typing to be a formidable Physical threat with a versatile move pool. For example, when equipped with Toxic, Stealth Rock, Draining Punch, or Protect, it becomes a formidable threat if you stay away from the fey.
9) Flygon

Known as “the elemental spirit of the desert”, Flygon sweeps in from the sandstorm to land ninth on our list. Unveiled in Generation 3, this Dragon type Pokemon remains one of the most underrated in the franchise due to its unique Ground and Dragon-type and all-rounded stats, making it a competent battler from the get-go.
However, as it is a combination of Ground and Dragon-type, its glaring weakness to Ice attacks requires the inclusion of U-Turn, a competitive move to allow it to make a quick escape while also dealing damage. Thus, with its kit limitations, the adorable Dragonfly spinoff Pokemon cannot place any higher.
8) Goodra
At number 8, we have chosen Goodra, the cute and lovely Dragon type Pokemon that will hug its beloved Trainer at any chance. However, be prepared to separate with sticky slime on your shirt, as the pseudo-legendary Pokemon often feels lonely when you are not around and oozes gooey tears when it hugs you.
Nevertheless, the pure Dragon type Pokemon is immensely strong against many others due to its special defence stat. However, try avoiding battling Steel, Fairy, and other Dragon types, as Goodra has slower health recovery. As for why it is placed higher than the previous two, the Dragon Pokemon has an ancient regional form called Hisuian Goodra, making it a Steel and Dragon-type and its pre-evolved forms are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Shelter.

7) Haxorus

Introduced in Generation 5 as a pure Dragon type Pokemon, its intimidating presence overshadows the previous Dragons on our list. However, despite its appearance, Haxorus is actually kind and down-to-earth unless you threaten their territory.
When faced with Haxorus, one must take note of its sturdy tusks that can even cut steel, its STAB (Same-type attack bonus) moves and its hard armor. Unfortunately, one must sacrifice speed for power, and Haxorus is one such example, as faster offensive Pokemon such as Hydreigon can run circles around him before he can even attack.
6) Hydreigon
Speaking about Hydreigon, this dual-type Dark/Dragon pseudo-legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation 5 comes in ahead of its bested opponent. Resembling the Cerebus of hell, Hydreigon is a vicious Dragon that consumes and destroys everything in its path with its attack.
However, while it has better speed stats and similar attacking stats with Haxorous, it still has plenty of weaknesses against types such as Bug, Fighting, and Fairy. Moreover, its speed compares little to the next Dragon type Pokemon on our list.
5) Salamence
Talking about pure power, Salamence is undoubtedly one of the best, as it has one of the highest based Attack stats of all pseudo-legendary Pokemon. For context, Salamence has a solid 135 Attack and 110 Special Attack, as well as 100 Speed, meaning it does not lose speed in sacrifice for its massive strength.
Furthermore, once it Mega-Evolved, Salamence becomes almost unstoppable, as its stats rise to 145 Attack, 120 Special Attack, 130 Defense, and 120 Speed. Lastly, this Generation 3 Drgaon-type Pokemon also gains the ability Aerilate, which turns Normal-type attacks like Hyper Beam into Flying-type attacks, giving them shocking STAB damage in the process.
4) Dragonite

When talking about a Dragon’s longevity in Pokemon, Dragonite is the perfect personification as it has been with us trainers since Generation 1. The adorable and lovable pseudo-legendary Pokemon has been the go-to Dragon type Pokemon for many trainers since its debut in the early Kanto days.
For example, Dragonite is known to break defences and has a good ability called Multiscale that reduces damage dealt to it by half as long as its HP is full. In addition to its matching intelligence with humans, this kindhearted but deadly Dragon is the only Dragon type Pokémon with an evolution line in the first generation of games. Therefore, we would be doing a disservice to exclude him from our list.
3) Dragapult
Sweeping its way to number three, Dragapult, a Dragon/Ghost pseudo-legendary Generation 8 Pokemon introduced in Sword & Shield, is a result of developer Game Freak flexing its creative muscles. Firstly, while the creature looks less imposing than others on our list, its stats speak a completely different speech.
For example, with its 142 Speed, it is one of the fastest Pokemon ever, meaning you are almost guaranteed to attack first. Combined with its 120 Attack and 100 Special Attack, it poses a massive threat with its supersonic missiles. Lastly, while its blistering Speed and Attack will hit your opponents fast and hard, it is really susceptible to damage as it has no reliable recovery moves.
2) Garchomp

Stomping itself in the top 2, Garchomp has been a fan-favourite since its release in Generation 4 due to its appearance in Diamond & Pearl, where many players saw it as a must-have on a winning team and an outlandish combination of a Dragon and a shark.
In addition to its outward appearance, Garchomp has access to some of the best moves across all the games it appears in, such as its Rough Skin ability and Stealth Rock and Toxic to tear down its opponent in the blink of an eye. Cited as the top Pseudo-Legendary Dragon in practically every respect, it also has a Mega Evolution that makes the match-up unplayable if you do not have any Ice-type counters.
1) Dracovish
Securing its status as the strongest Dragon type Pokemon on our list, we have the unusually design Dracovish. This goofy master of dragons may look like a hideous abomination made from a child’s worst dream, but it is in battle when we see how nightmarish the Dragon is.
For example, despite only having the base stats of 505, its overpowered move, Fishious Rend, is one of the most broken attacks in the history of Pokemon, as it doubles the damage if it goes first. Furthermore, Dracovish boasts the Strong Jaw ability, which increases the power of biting moves, making the combination a one-shot if he attacks first, thus making it the strongest Dragon type Pokemon the franchise has ever released.
