In a totally unexpected turn of events, 2K has announced the return of Top Spin, the legendary tennis game franchise dominating the early 2000s alongside Virtua. As part of the collaboration with the ongoing Australian Open, 2K has announced the return of the series with TopSpin 2K25 with a short 20-second teaser video.
In the trailer teaser above, we can see that 2K has refrained from revealing too many details regarding available characters, with no sneak peek of Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz and no other venues besides the Australian Open. The only thing we can take from the trailer is that TopSpin 2K25 will arrive soon with a revamped career mode.
Furthermore, 2K has stepped forward and addressed questions regarding the hyped return of the Top Spin franchise. “TopSpin 2K25 is the next must-play sports game from 2K that fully immerses fans into the world of tennis. For more information on TopSpin 2K25, including release date, game features and more. Stay tuned.”

What Is the Top Spin Franchise?
For the newer generation of tennis fans and tennis games that only recognise the World Tour, AO Tennis, Tennis Elbow and Matchpoint games and franchises, Top Spin was the grandfather of simulation tennis games. For context, the Top Spin franchise started its humble beginnings on the original Xbox console in 2003 before expanding to PC and PlayStation 2 in the following years.
As the 2000s progressed, three more Top Spin games were released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, ending the popular tennis series with 2011’s Top Spin 4. During that era and time, the Top Spin series was the best uncontested, with the only serious competition in the narrow niche of 2000s tennis games being Sega’s successful Virtua Tennis franchise.
However, as the excitement around tennis games ended and 2K prioritising its more well-known annual sports franchises, like the ever-popular NBA 2K, WWE 2K, and PGA Tour 2K, Top Side felt off the backburner with no signs of a return until now. Now, 13 years later, with the appearances of the new gens, such as Sinner and Alcaraz, living up to their hype and the reminiscence of the retired Roger Federer and the injured Nadal, this is a prime time for 2K to capitalise.
When Can We Expect News for TopSpin 2K25?
Although there are no specific release dates for TopSpin 2K25, we can have a rough estimation based on other annual releases, such as NBA 2K24 and EA Sports FC 24, that the game will be released sometime at the end of 2024 as it is custom for sports games to include the upcoming calendar year.
Therefore, the wait is not long, as we are already in the middle of January, and many hardcore fans have been agonisingly waiting 13 years for the long-awaited return of the old king. This situation is quite similar to the Dragon Ball Budokai Tenkaichi fans with their 14-year wait for the new Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO.
Moving back on track, actually, some fans may have had inklings before this official announcement from 2K as Kotaku claimed last year that a Top Spin tennis series reboot was under development at Novoto, California-based 2K studio Hangar 13 under the codename Project Hammer. Now, with the official confirmation, it is only a few months away before you can experience the tension and excitement of every swing with your favourite players.
