Activision has officially announced the complete shutdown of the original Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera, declaring that the WWII-inspired Caldera map will no longer be available after September 21, 2023. Since its launch in 2020, Warzone has gained immense popularity as a battle royale game, with the introduction of new maps periodically bolstering its appeal over the past three years.

Warzone Caldera No Longer

The reception of Warzone Caldera was polarised. While some players appreciated the fresh cosmetic and skin features, others felt frustrated and longed for the beloved Verdansk and Rebirth Island maps.
Gradually, Warzone saw a decline in its player base due to dissatisfaction with Caldera and the advent of Warzone 2.0. By discontinuing Warzone Caldera, Activision has hastened the shift to the sequel. As the player count for Caldera dwindles daily, it stands as the last vestige of the original Warzone.

After September 21, Warzone Caldera will be replaced by “Call of Duty: Warzone”, making Caldera and its previous versions a thing of the past. However, the reception to the new Warzone has been tepid at best. Players are drawing comparisons between the two versions of Warzone, pointing out changes in game pace, character movements, and the impact on viewer engagement on streaming platforms, leading to a drop in viewer count for streamers.
Nonetheless, expectations are high that Warzone 2.0 will bounce back in popularity with the upcoming World Series, the largest tournament of the year. This event will also be a fresh start for existing players as the Warzone Caldera map exits the stage for good, nudging fans to adapt to the game’s new version.

All Warzone Battle Royale Maps

Call of Duty’s battle royale may have offered limited maps. Still, some garnered significantly positive reactions from players. These maps varied in size, layout, and tactical elements, providing players with unique challenges and strategies for each survival encounter.
Despite the current solo availability of Warzone Caldera, players expressed a particular fondness for two maps: Verdansk and Rebirth Island. A comprehensive list of Warzone maps is as follows:
- Verdansk (Release Map)
- Rebirth Island
- Fortune’s Keep
- Verdansk ’84
- Caldera
- Ashika Island
- Al Mazrah
- Vondel
An updated version of Verdansk was later introduced, aptly titled Verdansk ’84, which transported players to a combat environment set in the 1980s. Verdansk ’84 was more than just a reskin — it brought a new Gulag and fresh points of interest, distinguishing it as a unique map.
The most recent addition to the roster is Vondel, aimed at piquing players’ interest in the new version of Warzone. It’s a mid-sized map featuring an intricate mix of bustling and desolate streets, even boasting underwater pathways. Vondel also stands out for depicting a European metropolis, appealing to those who appreciate grand architecture.

Verdansk and Rebirth Island remain the crowd favourites, while Caldera is considered one of the least popular among players. Given the game’s imminent transition, it’s unsurprising that Activision decided to make Caldera the final playable map in the first version of Warzone.
The full impact of Warzone Caldera’s official shutdown, marking the total shift to Warzone 2.0, is yet to be seen. Players resist choosing a favourite map as they still familiarise themselves with the new game version. Vondel may be the remedy the developers need to reignite interest among players, streamers, and viewers alike.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Modern Warfare 2 Required to Play Warzone?
No — Call of Duty: Warzone is an independent battle royale game. Despite being released in tandem with Modern Warfare 2, it’s available for free download on platforms like Steam or Battle.net. The game itself is entirely free to play. However, investing in the Battle Pass can enrich your Warzone experience.
Does Warzone 2 Have Cross-Platform and Cross-Play Support?
Yes — Call of Duty: Warzone (Warzone 2) fully supports cross-platform and cross-play features. This enables players across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms to engage in seamless multiplayer action. You can assemble with friends in the same lobby or challenge players from different platforms.
Can I Play Verdansk in 2023?
No — as of 2023, you will not be able to play on Verdansk, the inaugural map of the game. It was a part of the original Warzone, now known as Warzone Caldera, but was eliminated from the playlist in 2021.
