Dragon Ball Project: Multi, a new MOBA game from Bandai Namco based on the beloved Dragon Ball anime, is set to launch on Steam and mobile platforms in 2025 following a successful beta test. With a long history of video game adaptations across various genres, the Dragon Ball franchise is now branching into the massively multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), a genre the franchise never ventured into.
Unlike its predecessors, such as Dokkan Battle and Dragon Ball Legends on mobile, Dragon Ball Project: Multi offers a fresh, team-based strategic gameplay similar to MOBA giants like League of Legends and Pokémon Unite.
The synopsis reads: “Experience the world of Dragon Ball by wrecking the battlefield with your own strength or by conquesting the enemy objective with your friends and allies. The hero characters you take in control will strengthen as the round progresses, giving you a chance to obliterate enemy players and bosses alike.”

Setting

While details on the final product are scarce, beta participants have shared glowing reviews, praising the fast-paced, action-packed combat and robust lineup of Dragon Ball Project: Multi.
For example, the setting is much like Pokémon Unite, as Dragon Ball Project: Multi is a 4v4, top-down MOBA where teams work together to secure their opponents’ Dragon Balls.
Like any other MOBAs, players must destroy the enemy’s God of Destruction barriers (Nexus) while protecting their own, lending the game a tower-defence style of play that fans of the genre will find familiar.
4v4 Gameplay
According to what we saw from the beta test, the opening phase of each match focuses on defeating NPC enemies and levelling up your character to prepare for the intense battles ahead. After the game progresses, players can launch attacks on the enemy’s God of Destruction barriers, igniting all-out skirmishes between the teams. The most exciting moments in each round come when both sides engage in chaotic combat, fighting to control the battlefield and gain the upper hand.
Moreover, like Pokémon Unite, Dragon Ball Project: Multi also features bosses that spawn at set moments during the match. Defeating these bosses will significantly damage the enemy’s barriers, offering strategic opportunities to shift the tide of battle or widen your lead.
Lastly, Dragon Ball Project: Multi features Helper Abilities. For context, Players can equip a Helper, which offers an AoE (Area of Effect) ability, providing tactical boosts such as healing, blocking enemy attacks, or speeding up teammates. However, there is a cooldown, so combining teamwork with precise timing is crucial for success.

Characters and Skills

With Dragon Ball Sparking Zero offering the most character roster to date, Dragon Ball Project: Multi will definitely feature a well-recognisable roster of characters from the Dragon Ball universe, with more characters added as the game proceeds from release as the beta only has ten playable characters from iconic heroes like Goku and Vegeta and memorable villains such as Frieza, Cooler and Zamasu.
Regardless, every character offers a set of three standard skills, one super attack, and a passive ability, making each hero feel distinct. For example, Goku’s Kamehameha Wave or Vegeta’s Big Bang Attack can turn the tide in battle, and Majin Buu’s Candy Ray is a fun and devastating move that can stun opponents.
As far as we know, there are only three roles in Dragon Ball Project: Multi, rather than the five roles in League of Legends. The three roles are:
- Damage Dealers: These characters have immense offensive abilities, dealing massive damage to enemies. Characters like Goku and Frieza excel in this role with their offensive attack combos.
- Tanks: Durable characters that can absorb damage and protect teammates. Vegeta and Zamasu are popular tank choices due to their high endurance and self-healing abilities.
- Technical: Support characters specialising in crowd control, healing, and disruption. Characters like Gohan provide buffs to teammates and debuffs to enemies, though they felt underpowered in the beta.
Skin Customisation and Animations
Like many current MOBAs, Dragon Ball Project: Multi adds a customisation option for players to unlock skins, animation changes, and special moves to make their characters stand out. For example, the customisation options range from skins with simple colour palette swaps to character entrance animations and unique finishers.
However, acquiring rare skins and animations might prove challenging, as some items are locked behind capsules that are difficult to obtain. Whether or not this monetisation strategy will carry over to the final game remains to be seen, but we expect some form of payment for better skins and animations.
Parting Thoughts

With everything considered, Dragon Ball Project: Multi seems poised to carve out its niche in the crowded MOBA market thanks to its strong ties to the Dragon Ball universe and its unique twist on team-based strategy.
While there are some kinks to iron out before launch, the core mechanics are solid, and the game has the potential to build a dedicated fan base with regular updates such as new characters, maps, and modes, as they are critical to maintaining player interest in the long term.
If you’re a fan of Dragon Ball and enjoy MOBA-style gameplay, this game should be on your radar as it gears up for release in 2025. For more updates regarding the game or others, follow our Twitter page for timely coverage of the latest announcements.
