Concord, Sony’s new 5v5 hero-based first-person shooter, is finally receiving an open beta and early access period after acquiring the developer’s Firewalk Studios in 2023. Inspired by other renowned first-person shooter games such as Overwatch, Concord is Sony’s attempt to dwell in the hero shooter genre, but it is a less straightforward road than intended.
For context, the game’s originality came into question when its promotional screenshots and trailers depicted many similarities with Overwatch and Guardians of the Galaxy. In addition, the skillsets and maps look endearingly similar to Overwatch, and the concept of heavy emphasis on the story faced massive backlash from the fans.
Nevertheless, Sony is used to criticism by now with its official closing of its Rewards Program, and they hope Concord’s open beta will diminish the fan’s outcry and give this Overwatch, Guardians of the Galaxy mix first shooter game a chance.
Concord Open Beta Dates and Early Access Weekend
According to Sony, Concord’s open beta will run in two phases, with the early access weekend beginning July 12 to 14 and the open beta starting from July 18 to 21. The betas will be available to everyone who has pre-ordered the game, with four additional codes distributed to players in the first phrase, allowing players to invite fans to join the 5v5 enjoyment.
As a side note, crossplay will be available in the betas, as players can enjoy the game together on PC and PlayStation 5. In addition, Concord’s open beta will feature the 16 characters that will be available upon launch, such as Haymar, 1-Off, Lennox, Vale, Star Child and more. Furthermore, Concord will offer players four from six game modes and up to five maps during the beta.
However, there is a distinct difference between the early access weekend and the open beta, as the former will only offer four game modes, such as Trophy Hunt, Cargo Run, and Clash Point and four maps. As for the latter, it adds a fifth map and the Area Control game mode for players to experience. Unfortunately, it means Takedown and Signal Chase will await their opportunity at the official launch.

Is Concord Too Overwatch-Dosed?
The market for hero-based first-shooter games is a niche marketplace, but supplies of the genre have already made fans not eager for more as Marvel Rivals, Fragpunk, and Concord follow almost the same narrative. In the latter’s case, its initial trailer during Sony’s 2024 PlayStation State of Play was a massive letdown, as fans responded from staying silent to even booing after another generic sci-fi heroes and robots game.

To further voice their disapproval, fans bombarded the game’s gameplay trailer on YouTube with almost 55k dislikes and 5k comments, with some even sounding surprised the video even allowed commenting. It is a clear sign that fans are getting fed up with generic games like the generic Isekai’s coming each season.
However, Firewalk Studios did mention they are doing something beyond Overwatch, which is Firewalk Studios promising a new cinematic vignette weekly. With ongoing storytelling as its key, Sony hopes that players will enjoy their roles as “Freegunners,” who are essentially space-faring mercenaries, with each having their own distinct personalities and features.

Closing Thoughts
With everything mentioned, Concord’s open beta and early access weekend reception will likely decide Sony’s fate in its attempt at a first-person shooter game. However, signs look brim for the Helldivers 2 publisher, with fans eager to unload bullets on what they think about an “apparent copycat”.
