Wombo Me is the newest AI Avatar app developed by Wombo, the Canadian startup of the viral AI-generated art app Dream. After streamlining the process of creating virtual likenesses with its apps, its new Wombo Me app will allow users to turn a single selfie into multiple lifelike avatars in mere moments with speed and simplicity.
In an interview with TechCrunch, Wombo CEO Ben-Zion Benkhin mentioned that Wombo Me is unlike its competitors as they require you to submit numerous selfies and wait some time before getting your images. As for their own AI avatar app, it only requires a single selfie, and the app can generate it almost instantly. He also stated the app provides high-quality images that are as good or better than anything currently available on the market.
Moreover, he stated they want to give users a more streamlined experience when generating lifelike avatars, distancing themselves from the crowded AI avatar app marketplace, which includes the famous Lensa AI, Magic AI avatars, Fotor AI and more.

The Concept of Wombo Me Is Different From Its Competitors
Instead of following the traditional trend in AI avatar apps, Wombo Me is adopting a playful, engaging selection process modelled after dating apps besides just functionality. As the app’s description states, it’s a playground for digital self-expression, as users can share the avatars with friends and across social media and maybe even use them on platforms like LinkedIn and Tinder to capture professionalism and personality.
Furthermore, Wombo Me allows users to impersonate celebrities, movie characters or superheroes with a simple tap of a button. Users can also experience adding new hair colours, styles, makeup trends, and more to their avatars. It is an adventure into a realm of endless possibilities, as you can also create gender-swapped images of yourself or reimagine yourself as a seductive person.
Wombo’s head of AI, Parshant Loungani, stated in his interview with TechCrunch: “As soon as you install it, the first thing you see is a selfie screen, so it asks you to just provide a single image and then as soon as you press continue, you see ten images of you in unique alternate realities. And you can swipe right or swipe left in a Tinder-like experience to like it and save it. We plan on using that feedback to improve the user’s identity and the pictures that we generate to basically understand their preference and update it the next time.”
Envisionment of Wombo Me Heading Forward
Despite only launching the new app worldwide today, Benkhin and Co are looking ahead to what improvements they can make to Wombo Me. In his opinion, AI avatar apps are generally short-lived. Thus, they are devising a more long-term and ambitious plan for Wombo Me, particularly in providing a deeper platform experience from the app’s ability to generate content for a user from a single selfie. For example, if you have a whole group of friends in your app and the app is learning what each person looks like, you will have the potential to create a photo together.
Benkhin stated: “There’s a social aspect of it. The AI has learned what each of us looks like and can generate imagery of us. Now you can start automatically generating content for social events where multiple people are doing something interesting. So, we see the accessibility and single selfie advantage as a first step. The long-term of the product is where all the other differentiation is going to happen.”
He further reinforced: “We think the next stage of this is AI for media creation and not just curation. And increasingly, users are going to be creating AI-generated media that they’re posting for socials. And also the platforms themselves are going to be creating personalised content for users using AI. We think that’s the next era of social media. We think it’s a huge opportunity, and with every product and feature we make, we’re taking a step in that direction.”

Can Wombo Me Eclipse the Achievements of Dream?
The Canadian startup is prone to surprising the world as Dream, Wombo Me’s predecessor, was a viral success and named Google’s Best App in the United States last year. Therefore, it will be hard for Wombo Me to overtake the 47 million times downloaded app any time soon.
However, with detailed planning, such as the inclusion of a 10 to 20-second voice clip along with a video of them moving their head in a certain way, to then create a multimodal identity of theirs and generate content like dancing videos or interactions with friends, it is safe to say Wombo Me is heading to a successful future.
