Events Leading Up to Ragnarok
In the later chapters of the game, Odin becomes distraught and reveals that he’s Tyr. He has been pretending to be the Norse god of war, only to spy on Kratos and Atreus. This shows that Odin is a complex character whose main weapon is espionage. And why? Because he lost his mask, which has already cost him an eye. You may wonder why he’s taking such extreme measures like killong Brok.
But the answer lies in the prophecy of Ragnarok.
The mask gives Odin infinite wisdom when he wears it, and if he has the mask on call, he wants to peek into the future so that he can prevent his death at Ragnarok. At this point, it becomes apparent that Odin is one of the most selfish characters in the game, with no regard for the lives of others.
The problem with prophecies is that some of them are self-fulfilling. Ragnarok is self-fulfilling, which means that Odin basically triggered Ragnarok by killing Brok. Brok’s death is the straw that breaks the camel’s back, because it was completely unnecessary.

Ragnarok Begins
Ragnarok begins after Kratos and Atreus visit Surtr and convince him to join his wife Sinmara to start Ragnarok. This scene is one of the most romantic in Ragnarok, as Surtr and his wife have exchanged hearts. Regardless of what happens to the two of them, they’ll always be together. This is immortality, albeit a watered-down version of it.

After Surtr transforms into the giant that ushers in Ragnarok, Kratos and his many allies attack Asgard. Along the way, they discover that Odin made sure that mortals are posted at the gates to put Kratos and his gang in a bad light. But Kratos, having learned from his mistakes in Greece and the last game, decided there would be no collateral damage.
So they attacked Odin and his Aesir troops directly. Of course! This resulted in great losses on Kratos’ side, but fortunately allies like the younger Jormungandr and Thor’s wife and daughter came to their aid.
Kratos Battles Odin
Kratos fights Odin with the help of Atreus and Freya. Fortunately, Kratos breaks the yoke of being a godslayer. Thus, he leaves Freya and Atreus to believe in Odin, as the essence of the All-Father is now in a stone – asleep and powerless. Instead of crushing her ex-husband’s soul to dust, Freya lets go of her anger.
Immediately Sindri brings out the hammer of justice and smashes the stone. Brok’s death is still fresh in his mind, and Sindri is in no mood for Odin to make a comeback. At this point, Kratos and his men had only Surtr to deal with. Fortunately, Freya’s brother Freyr fends off Surtr’s onslaught, but at the cost of his life.

Coping with Brok’s Death
Brok’s funeral leads into the epilogue and shows Brok performing all the necessary death rites to send his brother to the afterlife. Kratos, Atreus, and all of the Dwarven brothers’ friends attend the funeral. But perhaps the most important lesson for all participants in the funeral, including the players, is forgiveness. When you let go, you can repair relationships that you previously thought were beyond repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kratos’ Wife, Faye, Make an Appearance?
Yes, Kratos’ wife appears in the form of murals that players will discover after Ragnarok. They show the giants’ vision of Kratos sacrificing his life in Ragnarok. However, since she destroyed the mural in Jotunheim, she leaves her husband and son alone to find their way. In this way, her family escaped the curse of self-fulfilling prophecies. Behind this mural, Faye also paints Kratos as a true god who has a loyal following because of his deeds across the nine realms.
What Happens to Atreus After Ragnarok?
In God of War Ragnarok, Atreus seeks out the other giants to learn about his heritage. Of course, the giants only take in their own kind, so the journey is for Atreus alone. Kratos, who has since matured, gives Atreus his blessing for his journey.
What Happens to Tyr?
After you finish the game, you may wonder about Tyr’s fate. The Tyr who accompanied you on your journey has turned out to be an imposter, and you want to conclude that section of the story. It turns out that Tyr has been imprisoned in Asgard all this time. To free him from his prison, follow the steps below.
- Go to the Raven Tree in Niflheim.
- Find the new path created by falling debris from Asgard.
- Eliminate the Aesir guards still guarding the prison.
- Go to the lowest floor and free Tyr.
