While the God of War Ragnarok Valhalla DLC release caught everyone by surprise, many believe the DLC was just a big teaser for a God of War Remake/Remaster coming in the near future. Such a remake or remaster would allow not only new fans but also long-time fans to revisit the iconic story of Krato in the Greek saga with enhanced visuals and gameplay experience.
While a God of War Remake/Remaster rumour sounds exciting, let’s discuss whether these rumours are valid or not.

Is There a God of War Remake/Remaster Coming?
There is no doubt that God of War is an iconic franchise in the gaming world. The franchise made its debut in 2005 with the first God of War game. For those who don’t know, the God of War franchise can be divided into two distinct sagas. The first, known as the Greek saga, comprises God of War (2005), God of War II and God of War III, which explores Kratos’ story with the Greek pantheon.
On the other hand, God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok saw Kratos embarking on a different adventure in the Norse sage. This saga represents not just a shift in the geographical and mythological setting but also in the tone of storytelling and game design, which was vastly different from its predecessor’s hack-and-slash style of gameplay.
The God of War franchise saw a soft reboot with completely different mechanics and settings, with God of War (2018) that introduced many new fans to the series. However, many of these new fans have not played the God of War trilogy set in the Greek saga. This is mainly due to the fact that the God of War trilogy, which comprises God of War (2005), God of War II and God of War III, are only playable on the PlayStation 3, denying many new fans from playing those games without investing in a PlayStation 3.
With the God of War franchise being so incredibly popular and with the recent success of God of War Ragnarok and its DLC, a God of War Remake/Remaster of the Greek saga is long overdue. Other than that, there have been some credible leaks that have hinted towards Sony greenlighting a God of War Remake/Remaster and the obvious hints in the God of War Ragnarok Valhalla that have ignited the rumours regarding a God of War Remake/Remaster, which we will discuss later in the article.

God of War Remake/Remaster Leaks and Speculation
There are some credible rumours floating around regarding a God of War Remake/Remaster, mainly fueled by a credible leak from XboxEra’s Special Nick, who has leaked a large number of projects in the past. He stated in “The 4th Annual Grubbsmas Shpeshaltacular” that he’d heard a remaster of the first three God of War games “might be happening”. He also mentioned that he is not clear whether this will be a remaster or a full remake of the classic games.
While it is entirely in the realm of possibilities for Sony to release a hefty remaster of the classic trilogy, the fact remains that the old God of War games are incredibly old and might not be able to compete with the modern entries in the God of War franchise. It is also worth mentioning that a number of developers have spoken out about how difficult the PlayStation 3 hardware was to work with, which might be one of the reasons why the classic games have not yet been ported over to the PlayStation 5.
Therefore, Sony might just elect to remake the classic God of War games from the ground up, just like how they did for Demon Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, with modern graphics and much-needed improvements. This remake could also allow Sony to go back to the old God of War games and remove some of the adult content that might not be appropriate today.
In God of War Ragnarok Valhalla, we saw Kratos revisiting the events that transpired in the Greek saga. Fans have pointed out that this might be a way for the developers to get people interested and ready to experience the original trilogy.

Final Thoughts
While God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok introduced many new fans to the series, there is a large number of fans who are unable to play the classic trilogy due to them only being available on the PS3. With God of War being such a massive franchise, releasing a God of War Remake/Remaster is a great business opportunity for Sony since there are millions of fans who are itching to play the original games and are unable to.
