In Hogwarts Legacy, spells are handed out by professors, like giving out candy. While some of these spells are harmless and simply fun to use, such as the ability to lift objects with Wingardium Leviosa, there are also some surprisingly destructive spells in the mix. These include the flamethrower spell Incendio, as well as the spell that literally causes explosions, Bombarda. Yet they don’t come under the category of unforgivable curses.

For those who are particularly intrigued by the darker side of magic, Hogwarts Legacy offers the opportunity to learn and use unforgivable curses named Crucio, Imperio, and Avada Kedavra. While they’re illegal and forbidden by the Ministry of Magic in the lore, the game allows you to learn and use these curses without any in-game consequences. But how do you go about learning these spells in the game?
In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps you need to take to unlock the unforgivable curses in Hogwarts Legacy. From finding the right professor who can teach you to master your dark magical abilities, we’ll give you all the information you need to become a master of the Dark Arts in the game.
How to Unlock Crucio
To unlock Crucio, you need to complete a quest called “In the Shadow of the Study”. However, it’s important to note that this particular side quest will only become available to you after you’ve finished the main story mission, “The High Keep”, as well as some of the side quests that are assigned to you by Sebastian at various points throughout the game. To start this quest, you must meet Sebastian outside the Slytherin common room. He’ll inform you that only a member of the Gaunt family knows the whereabouts of the scriptorium’s entrance. You’ll need to persuade Ominis Gaunt, who is hesitant, to assist you.

Progress through the quest, and you’ll come to a place called Slytherin’s Scriptorium to enter Slytherin’s Scriptorium, you must ignite the three braziers nearby, which will unlock the door. After entering the Scriptorium, you’ll see two interactive objects near a locked door. One is a note from Noctua Gaunt. To the right of the note, you’ll find some broken rubble which you can repair using Reparo. Speak to Ominis to open the door to the next room.
There are three gates that have Slytherin lock puzzles. To solve them, you need to locate the symbols on each gate. Be careful, though – if you don’t enter the correct symbols before the snake makes a complete rotation, it will attack you! While you explore the maze, make sure to look out for three additional notes left behind by Noctua.
When you pass through the third gate and enter another corridor, you’ll discover the last note from Noctua close to a locked door with the word “Crucio” written on the floor. Talk to Sebastian, who will eventually suggest teaching you Crucio or casting it on you. You’ll then have the option to either learn it or decline it. If you want to learn Crucio, choose the option which says to learn it.
How to Unlock Imperio
To unlock Imperio, you need to begin the quest named “In the Shadow of Time”. This will automatically become available once you’ve started completing Sebastian’s quests. Meet Sebastian at the catacombs and enter them. You’ll come across multiple spider enemies in this dungeon, so it’s recommended to use fire-based spells like Incendio or Bombarda for combat and for clearing spider webs.

Progress through the quest, and you’ll find a Student Journal Entry. Retrieve the Student Journal Entry, which describes the barricades you need to navigate in order to reach the relic. To advance to the next room, use Accio to move groups of bones and construct bridges or archways.
In a cutscene, Sebastian will talk to you about the Imperius Curse and suggest teaching you Imperio. You have the option to accept or decline. If you choose to learn the spell, you can equip it to a spell slot right away.
How to Unlock Avada Kedavra
To unlock Avada Kedavra, start the quest called “In the Shadow of the Relic”. Talk to Ominis at the catacombs and prepare to use fire-based spells to fight against Inferi and spiders. As you progress through the catacombs, you’ll encounter a challenging battle. Without giving any spoilers, make sure to focus on the boss, as the Inferi will keep spawning in waves. This will give you the best chance to succeed in the battle.

Once you leave the catacombs, talk to Sebastian and select the second option, “Everyone should know that curse”. This will give you a chance to ask Sebastian to teach you Avada Kedavra by selecting “Yes, please”. Once done, you’ll be brought to the short spell-learning mini-game and will finally possess the most deadly unforgivable curse.
