Bethesda’s RPGs have a smart feature that allows you to pass the time quickly by waiting. It’s a handy tool that comes in useful for a variety of reasons, which we’ll get into shortly. But first, let’s answer one of the most common questions in the popular 2015 RPG: How to wait in Fallout 4?
Waiting is a widely used mechanic in RPGs, as it is resting. In games like The Witcher 3 or Elden Ring, you can rest or meditate to refill your health and other stats. Fallout 4, however, differentiates between “Waiting” and “Resting.”

Fallout 4: How to Wait and Pass Time?

In Fallout 4, you can pass the time by sitting on any chair or armchair that is in a safe zone and not a threat to your survival. But how many hours can you wait, and is there any benefit to it? Well, waiting in Fallout 4 doesn’t offer any additional positive effects, it simply lets you pass the time.
Interestingly, previous Bethesda games didn’t require you to sit on a piece of furniture to wait. As long as you weren’t near enemies or in a dialogue cutscene, you could wait. However, in the fourth game, they added the option to “Sit” as part of this waiting process. Who doesn’t love a good sit-down, right?

Are Waiting and Resting the Same Thing?

While waiting and resting might seem similar, they serve different purposes in Fallout 4. When you need to pass in-game time, waiting is your best option. But resting can actually give you extra benefits.
You might need to wait for a specific time to complete a task or an NPC might not be available during certain hours. In such cases, waiting can speed up the game clock to reach the desired time.
To rest, you need to find a bed. Resting alone for an hour provides the first of two bonus perks in Fallout 4. The second one is available when you sleep in a bed with an NPC you’re in a romantic relationship with:
- Well Rested: Plus %10 XP for 8 in-game hours.
- Lover’s Embrace: Plus %15 XP for 8 in-game hours.
You cannot receive both perks simultaneously. The perk that activates when you wake up from resting is dependent on the type of sleep you had. These two perks are mutually exclusive. One hour of in-game time equals three minutes in real life. As a result, the bonuses are active for a total of 24 minutes before they expire automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Fall In Love in Fallout 4?
Romantic relationships with certain NPCs in Fallout 4 are possible, but there are some conditions you must comply with. Firstly, the NPC in question must be your companion, and the relationship level between the two of you must be high. Once they idolise you, the option to start a romance will appear in your conversation choices. A high charisma level can make this easier.
What Are the Beds in Fallout 4?
In Fallout 4, there are eight different types of beds available in the vanilla version of the game, without any mods installed. While three of these can be crafted, others can only be found in the world. You can craft Metal Clean Bed, Mattress, and Sleeping Bag. The other beds in Fallout 4 are Metal Dirty Bed, Hospital Bed, Military Cot Bed, Vault Bed, and New Vault Bed.
What Is the Wait Button in Fallout 4?
Unlike previous games developed by Bethesda, waiting in Fallout 4 cannot be done with a single click. However, you can access the waiting screen by sitting on a chair or couch and pressing the “T” key. But even if you don’t press the button, the game will prompt you to wait as long as you’re sitting on furniture. So, find the nearest chair or couch to wait for the desired time to pass.
