Exoprimal, Capcom’s latest creation, invites you and your mates to wage war against dinosaurs. It’s a multiplayer-only experience that leaves you wondering: Is Exoprimal cross-platform, cross-play and cross-progression?
Before we delve into the specifics, a warning: Exoprimal isn’t topping any lists for best cross-platform games. With critics handing it a score of 58 on Metacritic and players even less impressed with a sad 4.9, it’s clear we’re not dealing with an excellent co-op game. Still, knowing which platforms you can join your friends on for a laugh is worthwhile.

Is Exoprimal Cross-Platform?

Yes — Exoprimal is playable on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. There is no argument about the game version — new generation, old generation, or PC — it’s all the same. Whack on your Exosuit and gear up for a virtual prehistoric face-off online.
Exoprimal hit the shelves on all platforms on July 14, 2023. Early reviews weren’t glowing, with most critiques centred on the PS5 version. However, the comments we’ve gathered below can apply across the board.
Here are a few snippets from published reviews, despite Exoprimal cross-platform support:
- The Gamer — “Future seasons could salvage the flashes of excellence on display here, but I doubt players will stick around long enough for that to become a reality.”
- GameReactor UK — “Exoprimal is by no means a terrible game, but it just doesn’t reach the heights that you’d expect when you hear about its premise.”
- IGN — “Exoprimal is full of interesting ideas, but the real question is whether or not I’ll be interested in sticking around once it shows all of its cards.”

Is Exoprimal Cross-Play?

Sort of — Exoprimal does entertain some degree of cross-platform play support, but it’s not a free-for-all across all platforms. The game mode determines whether you can collaborate with friends on different platforms.
Cross-play comes into its own in Matchmaking mode. You’re thrown into a mix with random players worldwide to form a team. It’s all par for the course in multiplayer gaming. Theoretically, a PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S player could form a dream team.
But when you want to create a lobby, the goalposts shift. According to Capcom’s official words, only players on specific platforms can be invited. For now, these platforms are split into three different groups:
- PC (Windows), Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
- PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
- Steam
These groups can only play together amongst themselves. So, if you’re on a PC, you’re out of luck if you fancy a match with a mate on PS5 — for the time being. Capcom’s stated that they’re working on extending Exoprimal cross-platform play support to everyone. We’ll have to play the waiting game on that one.

Is Exoprimal Cross-Progression?

Unfortunately not — at the moment, Exoprimal doesn’t extend to cross-progression support. So, transferring your progress from one platform to another is a no-go. Your progress stays firmly put on the platform you’re using. It’s a bit of a blow if you’ve got a console in one hand and a PC in the other.
But hold your horses, Capcom stated they’re also working on cross-progression for Exoprimal. We could see some changes in the coming weeks or months.
And that’s all we’ve got to say about Exoprimal cross-platform, cross-play, and cross-progression features for now. If you’re fed up with the mainstream cross-platform games on the market, why not try your hand at this quirky dino-hunting game with your mates?
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Exoprimal Worth It?
Sort of — despite the common misunderstanding, Exoprimal doesn’t let you play without splashing the cash. With the Standard Edition charging you back $60, you might consider whether it’s worth parting with your hard-earned money. The reviews so far are decidedly middle-of-the-road. It’s a game with potential, but for now, it leaves a lot to be desired.
Does Exoprimal Have a Campaign?
Absolutely, although it’s not your typical solo mode. Exoprimal has been built from the ground up as a multiplayer experience. You’ll need to be online and ready to play with other players — your pals or random gamers. Sure, there’s a brief story woven into this online adventure, but it falls short of a solid campaign mode.
How Many People Can Play Exoprimal?
Five — in all of Exoprimal’s modes, you’ll join forces with four other players. It’s one of the unshakeable principles of the game. You can create a team with your mates or venture into the unknown with the Matchmaking system. As Exofighters, you’ll be tackling the dino menace head-on.
