The cozy genre in video games might be the only genre that everyone loves playing occasionally. Once dominated by The Sims, there are new contenders for the top spot, one of them being Palia. Palia is the latest MMO life simulation game, developed by Singularity Six, that is earning the favour of players globally.
Bringing a fresh perspective to the genre through its MMO aspect, Palia is set to be one of the biggest cozy games of 2024. Let’s talk about what makes this game so special from the rest.
Palia, a One-Of-A-Kind MMO Cozy Game
We think the biggest factor that contributed to the hype around Palia was the game being an MMO. We’ve had tons of popular life simulation games that honestly had amazing gameplay like The Sims 4 and Life By You but all of them have been single-player. With Palia introducing a multiplayer world, it opens up a world of possibilities for players to hang out with their friends while idly getting things done in-game.
This genre also reduces the loneliness often associated with single-player games. Cozy games are great because you can just sit back and play without any stress. But how cool would it be if you had your friends beside you, an online meeting place of sorts? Palia makes all of these possibilities into realities so players are not left wanting anymore.
Being an MMO, it also urges players to interact with others online, creating new bonds between strangers. Be it chopping down flow trees that require multiple people, or going on the hunt and splitting the loot, chores are always more fun when they’re done together.
Customisable Appearances Forever

Another positive for Palia is definitely its large library of appearances to choose from. From head shape to hairstyle and clothing, Palia has made sure there is something for everyone in there. They’ve gone as far as to introduce highlights for your character’s hair, making multiple highlights an option as well. So get crazy with your avatar and live out your heart’s desire.
That’s not all though. Creating a customisable avatar is nothing special since almost every other game allows you to do that now, but once you do that, you need to stick with it throughout the entirety of the game. Singularity Six knows sticking to one style is boring so players can change their appearance in front of the mirror in the clothing shop whenever they feel like it. You will need to keep in mind that this feature has a one-week cooldown so use it wisely.
Even so, being able to change your avatar’s look whenever you want is big and puts the game above the rest.

Palia Lack of Server Issues Is Impressive
Weird thing to boast about, we know, but with the number of MMOs that face server issues in the starting months after release, we think it’s only fair to mention that Palia players don’t experience the same issues. Many players have reported being able to play on unstable connections without a hitch. Of course, the game being an MMO you’ll see others moving after a slight delay, but aside from that, players themselves could easily continue doing their daily chores.
Palia being a cozy life simulation game fits in perfectly since there’s never any threat of dying or being attacked so a bit of lag won’t hurt you. According to reports, players are able to complete their quests regardless of slow internet speeds meaning the game doesn’t require too much bandwidth to play. PC players might not see this as a benefit but Switch players can definitely relate, having to play outside on spotty Wi-Fi at times.

A Plethora of Activities and a Captivating Storyline

Any game, regardless of its genre, needs to provide players with an incentive to come back. Palia is pretty set in that regard since you’ll find a variety of different activities you can take part in. These include fishing, mining, foraging, hunting, etc. You aren’t bound to any single activity to progress into the game, which is what makes the game feel so freeing. The game might lead you to try out some new activities once in a while for quests but you can always lead it afterwards if it’s not to your liking.
Activities aren’t the only thing holding the player base together. Palia also has a great storyline that starts with a human returning to the world of Palia after a long absence. Humanity is long gone and the world is now inhabited by purple elves called Majiri and their helpful golem companions.
Now that you’ve arrived, it’s time to get reinstated into society by building a house and integrating yourself into the Majiri community. You’ll also find other humans (Other players) along the way so it doesn’t feel daunting to be the only human there. As you progress further into the game, you find out more about the Majiri (NPCs) around you and how much more there is to them than meets the eye.
Free-To-Play Aspect and In-Game Cash Shop
One of the very important aspects of every life simulation game is how monetised the game feels while playing. Many games will prospectively be free-to-play games but require so much grinding that it becomes hard to progress without spending real money. Others have straight-up paywalls.
However, Palia is unlike most games in that regard. The cash shop in Palia is filled with cosmetics, mostly for outfits and gliders. But, according to reviews, the free-to-play outfits are already so unique and fascinating that people rarely feel the need to buy something from the cash shop. Palia boasts an amazing collection of outfits so you can wear whatever you want without any restrictions.
There are also no paid furniture packs, something extremely common for life simulation games. That means anything big spenders own in terms of furniture, you can own as well. This really puts everyone on an even playing field and reduces the disparity between spenders and non-spenders. Pets are one item inside the game that are attached to paid currency packs so if you want a fuzzy buddy alongside you, you’ll need to pull out that credit card.

The Bottom Line
Palia is a great life simulation game that allows you to relax and unwind while playing it. It doesn’t get dull with all the activities and adding your friends to play with you simply piles on to the fun.
Even if the game doesn’t have something you want yet, we can always hope it is added eventually since Singularity Six is constantly updating the game as time goes on. So if you’re looking for a chill and laid-back game to kill time, Palia can get the job done.
