After two weeks since Sledgehammer Games launched Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with mostly negative reviews on Steam, the studio confirms that they will temporarily disable the controversial Groot skin in an upcoming update to implement some adjustments. The decision from Sledgehammer Games is much welcome as the skin brought over Modern Warfare 2’s Season 6 still has visibility issues in Modern Warfare 3.
For context, Modern Warfare 3 fans expressed their frustration about the skin earlier this month as the Gaia skin, an unlockable cosmetic for the operator Nila “Nova” Brown, was literally invisible due to its colours and textures, all of which look eerily similar to Marvel’s walking tree dude, thus led to the term “Groot”. With players begging Sledgehammer Games to remove or change the skin on X and Reddit, the studio finally answered their call in a Reddit AMA.
Sledgehammer Games Will Disable the Groot-Inspired Gaia and Gaia Blackcell Operator Skin in Future Updates
In the Reddit AMA held on November 19, Sledgehammer Games responded to fans’ cries in a statement addressing the issues. “Adjustments to Gaia and Gaia Blackcell Operator Skins are in the pipeline for Modern Warfare 3. In a future game update, we’ll disable this item until said changes can be released to all players.”
According to fans, the change was a long time coming as the Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone’s Gaia skin for the Nova operator is a persistent issue in Modern Warfare 3. For example, the Gaia skin is tough to see on particular maps, giving players an unfair advantage in multiplayer. Furthermore, it is not the first time Sledgehammer Games has made adjustments to skins, as the 2019 controversy surrounding Roze and Black Noir blending into the surrounding dark environment still looms in players’ minds.
Moreover, despite Infinity Ward’s best efforts in adjusting the Gaia Skin during The Haunting event in Modern Warfare 2, many fans still remained displeased. For instance, they argue that the changes were insufficient for the skin to increase its visibility. Therefore, Sledgehammer Games will listen to player feedback about the skin as the studio prepares for its own adjustments.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Players Split View on Sledgehammer Games Decision
Despite Sledgehammer Games’ best interest in helping their players with this particular issue, there is still disunited debate among the community, with some calling for its removal and others arguing it is a skill issue and disparity. For example, under CharlieIntel’s X replies, some fans call for the Groot skin removal from Modern Warfare 3 completely, even though the skin is the main reward from Modern Warfare 2 Season 6’s paid battle pass.
On the other side, some skilled Call of Duty players claimed that the skin highlights a skill issue for some players in the community, with them unable to spot the character in specific places. However, some fans in the community have hit back and claimed that it is indeed broken and symbolises pay-to-win.
To put it into context, thanks to its brown, green, and red colour palette and see-through, branch-like limbs, it is currently difficult to spot someone wearing the skin in a muddier theme match, such as Wasteland or Estate. Despite the glowing eyes and a brightly-coloured cloud emanating from it, it is not enough, as newer players are totally oblivious if said player is standing right in front of them.

Will Sledgehammer Games Remove the Gaia Skin Altogether?
While it is unlikely for Sledgehammer Games to remove the Groot Gaia Skin from Modern Warfare 3, the studio has not stated what adjustments they will make. Although we can confidently predict that the rework will make the skin more visible, it is crucial for them not to dismiss the unique design, as players in Modern Warfare paid money specifically for the theme and design.

As for what other updates are coming in the future, Sledgehammer Games announced a stamina bar feature for multiplayer. In addition, with Season 1 of Modern Warfare 3 beginning sometime in early December, the future update may include Warzone integration with the new Urzikstan map.
Moreover, there seem to be brand-new core multiplayer maps for 6v6 modes and several new updates for Zombies heading to Modern Warfare 3. For more information about Call of Duty and news about your favourite games, follow our Facebook and Instagram social media accounts for daily updates.
