The Outlast Trials Finally Confirms Release Date for PlayStation and Xbox on March 2024

Since its early access launch on PC in May 2023, The Outlast Trials has quickly come through the ranks and become one of the best co-op multiplayer title horror games this year, with over 1.5 million copies sold worldwide. Thus, anticipations arose when the developers would launch The Outlast Trials on other gaming platforms and whether the game would feature cross-play and cross-progression.

In The Game Awards held last week, the developers of The Outlast Trials, Red Barrels, brought positive news to the fanbase as they confirmed a 2024 release date for old-gen and new-gen consoles, answered questions regarding the game’s cross-play and cross-progression features and provided massive updates regarding the upcoming V1 launch.

The Outlast Trials Will Arrive on Old-Gen and New-Gen Platforms on March 5

As mentioned earlier, Red Barrels, the indie development studio behind the critically acclaimed and terrifying Outlast franchise, announced during The Game Awards that it is bringing its survival horror multiplayer The Outlast Trials to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on March 5, 2024. Thus, old-gen console holders will not have to fret over being unable to play the brand-new take on the acclaimed Outlast survival horror series like other new modern games.

According to Red Barrels, The Outlast Trails will be available digitally at launch in two versions, the Standard Edition and Deluxe Edition, which players can pre-order on Microsoft and PlayStation digital stores now. As for the difference, the Deluxe Edition will contain the Reagent Starter Pack, which includes four exclusive legendary player skins, exclusive cell items, player icons and cell posters.

In addition, the game developers highlighted that there is a pre-order incentive for both versions of the game, which is the Grizzly Hazmat Outfit. Listed below are the two editions with prices and additions: 

• Standard Edition (Game only) for $39.99
• Deluxe Edition (Game + Reagent Starter Pack) for $49.99 

Does The Outlast Trials Have Cross-Play and Cross-Progression?

Furthermore, Red Barrels has disclosed that The Outlast Trials will have cross-play but no cross-progression. It comes as a massive surprise to fans because many studios are now prioritising cross-progression to allow fans more options for gaming and force players to stick with the platform the game launched on or move to the developer’s preferred platform and start from scratch again.

Despite the positive news of cross-play, which allows players from PC, PlayStation, and Xbox to play together, many shared their disappointment in the lack of cross-progression feature as the game’s key feature is its progression system, in which each completed trial opens up more challenges and story segments.

For example, one fan, in particular, voiced his displeasure by highlighting that all their items and upgrades, known as Rigs in The Outlast Trials, will be lost if they swap to console from PC. Without the inclusion of the cross-progression feature, many felt a disservice to their hard work and time spent on The Outlast Trials, which may lead to lesser sales on the upcoming consoles.

What Can We Expect From The Outlast Trials V1 Launch?

Brushing off the negativity for now, Red Barrels also unveiled many features coming in The Outlast Trials V1 launch alongside the multi-console released on March 5, 2024. For example, the V1 update will bring many more quality-of-life improvements, balancing, and bug fixes to The Outlast Trials to enhance player’s overall immersion in the horror game.

• New Trial – An all-new Toy Factory trial pitting subjects against the fearsome Mother Gooseberry.
• New MK-Challenges – Specifically Designed for the Toy Factory environment.
• Full Controller Support – Select different controller layouts and vibrations to fit your playstyle.
• New Evidence Documents – Continue learning more about the Murkoff backstory and the Outlast lore.
• Additional Character Customisation – Many new pieces of cosmetics to unlock.
• New Cell Decorations – Decorate your cell with new cosmetics.
• New Legendary Outfits – Acquire new, reborn, legendary outfits.
• Increased Level Cap – Increase your therapy and grind up to level 65.
• New Amps – Fine-tune your loadout with many new Amps.
• Weekly Programs – Come back every week to experience new therapies.
