Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a phenomenal FPS with great graphics, awesome music scores, and fast-paced combat. There’s not much for critics to hate, except for the motto that says, “If it’s not broken, why fix it?”. This applies to the game’s campaign and multiplayer modes, including the famous Battle Royale from Call of Duty: Warzone. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a commercial success, but fans and critics alike are seeking new experiences. This article includes a compilation of the game’s genre-defining features but most of all, we’ll talk about the upcoming DLCs.
There’s no preview available yet, but we’ve scoured the web for details about the upcoming expansion content that the developer may have in store for players. The storyline is still similar to the old version, featuring Captain Price, Task Force 141, and the supervillain Vladimir Makarov. Mind you, these expansions include all possible gun skins and costumes.

New Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Expansions on the Horizon
Sadly, there’s currently no DLC available for 2023’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Players who want to play some DLCs should check out 2009’s version of the game. The remake was only just released, so maybe we’re pushing our luck at Player.com by expecting expansion content. However, with the game’s poor reception from critics, fans, and regular players alike, we’re not that surprised. For one, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is being mocked as a DLC of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This doesn’t mean it won’t sell like hotcakes on a winter morning, even though the game’s rival, Battlefield 2042, received more positive reviews.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Redefines the Genre — Somewhat
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sort of fell flat on its face. We expected genre-defining gameplay that would force us to relearn the game mechanics from scratch. However, the game is the same as its predecessor, which isn’t a good thing in this case. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 still impresses where it matters, which is why you can learn more about the game’s endearing features below.
#1: Experience a Revamped Campaign
The campaign experience is slightly different from what players enjoyed in the original game. For one, the approach to combat is entirely dependent on the player’s style. If you want to go gun-blazing, there are assault rifles and grenades specially made for such a play style. However, if you prefer the stealthy approach, there are many load-outs for you to pick from. They include:
- Killing enemies with a silenced pistol and a knife.
- Using a silenced sniping rifle to eliminate enemies from a distance.
No matter your playstyle, there’s no shortage of weapons to explore, including assault rifles, smoke grenades, Molotov cocktails, pistols, SMGs, and LMGs. It’s like you’re playing Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl with the sheer number of guns available. You’re a death dealer in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and you can take different paths to achieve your goals. Along the way, you’ll bond with compelling characters like Captain Price and Task Force 141.
#2: Upgraded Maps and Terrains
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 brings back 16 maps from the original game so the experience is nostalgic. Besides that, maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 also make a return. However, the highlight is that every map in the game has been modernised to immerse players. For one, players will be able to enjoy the game in stunning 4K at 60 FPS. If you’re a lover of multiplayer modes, make sure your TV or monitor has low latency. Some of the fan-favourite maps you should look forward to are:
- Derail.
- Estate.
- Exhibit.
- Afghan.
- Farm-18.
- Mercado.
- Shipment.
- Shoothouse.
One of the standout quality-of-life updates that we love is the ability to vote on a map. Previous iterations of the game lacked this feature, so it’s nice to see it return. The classic mini-map is also present.
#3: A Robust Multiplayer Mode
The multiplayer is fleshed out with all the necessary modes and that’s besides the Battle Royale. For one, there’s a new open-world Zombies map that you can explore. It rivals the sandbox in games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and other Rockstar Games. You’ll team up with other squads to battle the undead on the biggest Call of Duty map made for zombies. The reason you’re teaming up with other teams is that you’ll need the extra hands for when the hordes of the undead get difficult to deal with. There are new missions, features, and secrets to learn in the Zombies mode.
Play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and explore even more multiplayer modes such as Cutthroat, Ground War, and War. Cutthroat is a 3v3v3 action that occurs on Core Multiplayer maps. Ground war is just how it sounds: An all-out war between dozens of squads who have access to tanks, helicopters, and a vast range of games. The last team standing wins the match.
#4: An Extensive List of Weapons
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 boasts the largest collection of weapons in Call of Duty history. For one, there are over 35 new weapons to try out. However, the regular armoury already boasts assault rifles, shotguns, SMGs, LMGs, marksman rifles, rocket launchers, and grenade launchers. The best part is that you can customise any of your guns with Aftermarket parts. These parts unlock hundreds of weapon combinations that affect different stats like reload speed, accuracy, damage, draw and aim time, and many more.
Aftermarket parts are viable modifications to guns that are already powerful. However, with a kit, you can switch up a gun’s looks and capabilities beyond the traditional attachments. To unlock Aftermarket parts, you must beat weekly challenges or else your weapon will be stuck at the same level. This is similar to the non-linear progression system in Call of Duty Mobile, which is accessible by anyone with a smartphone.
That said, Loadouts have evolved in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 over the years and nobody gives the studio enough credit. They’re still similar to previous experiences but there are more options to choose from now. You’ll be able to customise every part of your equipment, such as your gloves, boots, vests, goggles, parachutes, and many more. Fine-tuning your experience has never been this immersive in any previous Call of Duty game.
#5: The New Tac-Stance Is a Gamechanger
Tac-Stance, also known as Tactical Stance, is a game changer that revolutionises how players approach close-quarters combat. Whenever you’re in tight positions with no space, like in sharp corridors and staircases, aiming down is not recommended. In these scenarios, Tac-Stance is the way to go. It’s in between hip-fire and aiming down the sights, perfect for disposing of enemies with more accuracy and aggression.
#6: Core Gameplay Changes
Movement is a smoother affair in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, especially with the addition of slide-cancelling animations. In this remake, slide cancelling doesn’t reset Tactical Sprint anymore. What’s more? Players will be able to partially cancel their reloads so they can gun down enemies faster. There’s also faster mantling and sprinting in the latest iteration of Call of Duty.
Why Did Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Flop?
This section is dedicated to all the reasons why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 flopped. However, this is from a critic’s perspective. It includes players’ reviews, reviewers’ appraisals, and the issue of the game being a DLC.
The Game Is Being Called DLC for a Reason
The most prevalent issue is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is being called a Call of Duty: Modern War 2 expansion. For one, modders have looked at the game’s code and found shaky evidence that suggests it’s just an expansion. Our boring gaming journalism aside, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 messed up by offering the same maps as 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
To gamers, it’s like the developers have lost their passion for the work. So, instead of building interactive maps from scratch, they’ve settled for remaking the old ones.
Negative Player and Critic Reviews
Certain games were intentionally review-bombed by aggressive marketers. The most obvious telltale sign of a game with bombed reviews is inconsistent claims. Even people who haven’t played the game will give it a negative review, despite admitting that they haven’t experienced the title even once. Don’t get us wrong; This is the latest Call of Duty game on the market. It’s the culmination of all the features that made each entry great.
Still, it’s not worth £60 because its new features were recycled by the developers. Many veteran players consider the game to be a joke because they brought back the same characters, maps, and missions. Players and critics want to experience different games with new protagonists, characters, maps, storylines, guns, and many more. However, besides the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise, all of the studio’s other shooter games have been disappointing, story-wise.
Additionally, the game’s combat is even worse than its predecessor’s, which should be impossible. We believed otherwise until we experienced Aim Assist, which is now overpowered on platforms like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Killing enemies couldn’t be easier. Except for that, we don’t want the lack of challenge. Even PC gamers rate the game poorly, so the previous version has more positive reviews. Also, microtransactions spoil the experience since they force players to purchase the best skins and weapons to progress.
Rushed Development Contributed to the Review Flop
Probably high off the success of Call of Duty Mobile, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward rushed the remake’s development. This is one of the biggest contributing factors to its poor quality, especially as fans noted that the game was developed and launched in half the time it took them to release previous entries. Call of Duty games usually take three years to go gold, but this barely took a year and a half. Perhaps it’s due to pressure from the studio’s new shareholders, Microsoft, or maybe they (The creators) were truly overconfident that the game wasn’t a masterpiece. However, with the number of copies sold already, we doubt that confidence is unwarranted.
Our Final Say: We Await the Next Major Entry
At this point, we’re not looking forward to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 expansions anymore. We want a new game and so far, a direct instalment of the current release would be welcomed with open arms by everyone. Soap is dead and Captain Price is in mourning so many players are expecting an ending to the saga. We don’t mind controlling a new protagonist and villain with fresh voiceovers. However, it’s the worst-rated Call of Duty game in the franchise’s history.
